Boy 19, Steals Locomotive

Thu Jul 06, 2006 3:11 am

A 19-year-old train buff from Rawmarsh has been sentenced to 200 hours community service after going joyriding in a 49-tonne locomotive.

More here: http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/south_yorkshire/5151370.stm

Sounds like the kid knew what he was doing, saying that points arnt rocket science to change and neither is driving a 08.

200 Hours for potentially causing a major rail incident if he had got out onto the mainline, and that's quite easy in Tinsley yard from experience myself, however i think the sentence for this kid was way, way to light. Something like this should be delt in a much stricter way, especially having 40 minutes at the helm of a 49 tonne loco!

Anyway, BMIFlyer has been told to stick to conducting until a driver position becomes available.  stirthepot

I cant turn left, i cant turn right all i can do is go backwards and forwards...

Thats pretty frightening Lew that he could get in there unstopped. I mean Tinsley isn't exactly some small backwater freight yard, surely somebody would have been suspicious by a loco rumbling up and down the tracks for 40 minutes in broad daylight!!!!!! High res vests are pretty easy to come by on ebay and the likes, he'd most likely have gotten away with it if he was wearing one by the sounds of it!

Ah well, at least we know now where Lee went on the Sunday Wink

His mates were with him by the trackside but he knew what he was doing and took full control of the loco and showed off to his mates.

I think his mates edged him on a little, but still.. could of been very nasty.

The driving of a locomotive isn't the problem, it's knowing how and when to stop and knowing the singal systems that is the difficult part. 50 Tons of locomotive can cause a lot of damage.
A number of years ago here in NYC, some 16 year old who was into subways, managed to get an operator's key and run a passanger carrying subway train for a number of stops. It's when he missed a signal that the train stopped due to a special trip switch. I also recall a number of years ago in New Jersey some guys screwed around with the switch for a spur line and the train ran into a building and killed the train operator. Those kids got some hard time.
200 Hours community service isn't enough, he should have to spend some time in H.M.'s Prison system for his stupid crime.

I wonder if on some rail enthusiast forum they have threads regarding MS Train Simulator vs. operating a real engine? I guess you could take some of the MSFS threads on here and replace MSFS with MSTS and real a/c with real engine......

I'd say thats possible if you found a very details and full working cab.. Certainly the 08's are simplified in controls and operating compaired to the new 66/67 types.

I've only ever "played" MSTS a couple of times i didnt find it all that realistic as im used to real world loco driving i didnt find the realism enough or even slightly near to the real thing.. however i'm sure it may give some insight as to operating a loco.. There are also books floating around, aswell as TCTOM's (Train Crew Type Operating Manuals) on how to operate such locomotives, i've seen a couple on eBay and managed to have them pulled via the British Transport Police because of the nature of what "could" or what now "has" happened.

Some of the train buffs I met when I worked on the R.R. knew as
much about the equipment as we the train crews did.

A few times I had to sic the cops on them as they were walking
around carrying employee time tables, rule books, switch and
equipment keys etc.

Operating a lite engine isn't the hardest task in the world. However,
if this kid ran through a switch and ended up on main track, he could
have caused some major problems.

He should stick to playing with his H.O. trains on his little figure
8 layout.

Hey the kid must have been a real train euthusiast. The guy started the locomotive with a span using some complicatied method. Maybe the train service will give the guy a job  Smile

He obviously knew what he was doing, just staying in the freight yard

My dad would love this thread!!!! He's a complete train buff and has about 7 different model railways. 2 x G scale both of which are in the garden, 2 x N gauge, Z gauge and OO gauge. Overall has about 13 engines and diesel etc etc.

He also gets excitedwhen visiting Glasgow and see an EWS red loco!

Theres a gate which is sealed across the line before he is able to proceed onto the mainline.. but with 49 tonnes of loco and a steel gate, its nothing could of easily tore it down.

Whilst I realise what the guy did what completely stupid, he obviously knew not to go on to the mainline where he would have had more room for speed etc etc. He was smart enough to not endanger anyone else's lives except for his and his friends (who is apartently on holiday now), which is why the sentence is only 200 hours

There's a safety barrier which would of stopped him getting onto the mainline anyway at Tinsley.. There's a catch-point which is electronically controlled and its set away from the mainline at all times unless a authorised train is transiting onto the mainline. However, if he had of got onto the mainline, example knowing how to use a signal phone, things could get very nasty..

well, 200 hours means 25 working days, or 13 weekends, or quite a heavy part of his sparetime in the coming 4 months. It will teach him a lesson.
-
the potential consequences are obvious, I however do NOT believe that a prison sentence would have been appropriate. Not least as to all appearance it was his first "crime".
