I Had A Paranormal Experience Tonight.....

Sun Jul 09, 2006 3:02 pm

So earlier this evening, around 11pm, I'm browsing Airliners.net when my monitor power supply finally craps out. To me, this is unacceptable. I think of my old 17" ViewSonic sitting a few miles away in a storage facility.

I figure what the hell, I'm gonna go get it. I've got more browsing to do.

Now let me tell you something about this storage facility - it's pretty big, located a little ways off the highway on the outskirts of the city. Even though it's a pretty new and nice facility, it's poorly lit at night, and there is nothing but darkness surrounding it. The highway is near, but neither street lights nor buildings are visible. There is no 24-hr security, just lapsing video cameras stationed in various spots. There are 2 electronic keypad gates that let you in and out.

As you may imagine, many would view this place to be pretty creepy at night. I hadn't been there at night until a little under an hour ago, and I'd say it didn't bother me much until what happened, happened.

I pulled into the complex, punched in my passcode, and drove around the facility - curious to see if anyone else was there this late at night. No cars, no noises, no people.

I come to the largest building in the complex - a 3-story block of concrete and metal sheets. I punch the door code in and carry the monitor into the elevator. I go up to the 3rd floor, the elevator door opens to reveal a dimly lighted mixture of hallways and doors. I unlock my door and set my crapped out monitor down. I spend a few minutes digging around for my old monitor, and that's when I hear them:

Faint voices and whispers. Couldn't tell if they were in the building, on the same story as me, or in one of the other buildings. I sat still for awhile - the voices stopped and started again every 5 or so seconds. They were so faint that one couldn't tell whether they were male or female. I figured some people might've arrived while I was inside, so I walked out of my storage room and over to the side of the building where there are windows all around, and where you can see the entire facility.

No cars, no lights, nothing. My Grand Am is sitting 30 feet below where I left it. The voices continue on and off.

It seemed no matter where I went in the building, they didn't get louder or softer. Rather odd, I thought, and began to wonder WTF was up with this.

At this point, I said to myself, "Screw this" and walked back to my storage room. Grabbed my old monitor and got in the elevator. The voices had stopped for a good half a minute by now. I stopped the elevator on the second floor to see if I could hear them any better from there - when the door opened the entire area was pitch black. Lights are supposed to be on 24 hours - and I although I can't be 100% sure, I swear all lights on all floors were on when I pulled into the complex.

I said out loud - fuck this - and when down to the 1st floor. Still no voices - none heard since the 3rd floor.

Kind of in a hurry, I set the monitor in the back seen of the GA, started up, and drove around the complex looking for any sign of life. Nothing. Not even the stray dogs that usually hang around the area. Something scare them away?

Then, I left.

So, I heard voices, yet am 99% sure that I was the only person there. Unless there are some people living in one of the storage areas of that building, which of course, is highly doubtful. The owners are an old husband and wife that live a good 20 minutes away in Georgetown.

So I'm thinking now, that was some of the weirdest shit I've experienced in a long time, and I thought I'd share it with you. Hope you didn't piss your pants.

I'll tell ya what.....I'll bet someone is hiding, screwing, living or possibly has a drug operation in one of the storage units. It can be a cheap temporary shelter, storage or production facility. Could someone possibly bicycle or walk in or park their car inside a unit?

I'd say it's a possibility, but a very very slim possibility. Most of the units are not long enough to fit a car into. You have to have a passcode to get into the complex, and then a door code to get into any specific building. I doubt anyone would live or stay in a storage unit - sooner or later they would get caught on the security cameras.

I wasn't there more than a few minutes, and I highly doubt that I would have missed any hearing or seeing anyone coming or leaving through the gates. They are quite squeaky, so I am sure I would have heard them.

It also doesn't explain how the voices seemed to "follow" me around the building - their volume and tone never changed as I moved throughout the building.

I have a theory. But first, in order to make complete sense of your story, I'll need the exact location of, and all passcodes for, your storage unit.

Very strange, this is. I have stories as well, that I will share after having solved your riddle.

VEry creepy......I'd do some investigating if I were you as in ask around the facility during the day to see if anyone else has experienced this. Also look at the area it's situated, any stories of anything paranormal happened within the vicinity??

Definitely do some digging!

Now that a nice starting scene for a video game  Smile

Anyway I have noticed, if it's really late at night (more like early in the morning) and I'm past my sleep time and I'm in some silent place, like an office, I tend to make a big deal from any small noise and imagine stuff. But I never heard voices though.

The second floor being pitch dark is definitely weird, since you say it should be lit. Maybe it's out of service...

Take it easy.

Local news item from Reno about ten years ago: A guy had picked up a woman in a club here, then kidnaped her. He kept her in a storage facility like yours. He would stop by to torture and rape her and feed her at least every day or two. He kept her there for several weeks before it was discovered.

Call the police.

Probably not anything like what happened here but certainly not 'paranormal' either. Needs investigation.

Oh, a few years ago, hiking in the high Sierra I heard voices. I thought it was a rather noisy party of hikers. Being deaf in one ear I cannot locate sounds so it took my wife to track it to a microwave station on top the ridge. You could hear one side only of various telephone conversations all the time while standing outside the building.

I was thinking the same sort of things - but last night I was wide awake, and very alert. Whenever I heard the voices, I "double-checked" in my mind, but sure enough, they were there. Remember, I think I would have noticed if the lights were out on 1 out of the 2 floors of the building when I pulled up to it - there are several windows on one side. So, if they went out whenever I was in there, and they went out on only one floor - that's very odd to me.

I've only had like one other 'paranormal' experience in my life, but that's an even longer story.

I will call the owners today and report what happened, and I'm sure they will check the building. I just never considered anything like that because I'm 99% sure that nobody entered or left that complex in the minutes that I was there.

Positive - they were faint voices, but they had tone and variation - words being said. It was a dead calm night as well.

I'm thinking about heading back over there tonight to see if I can hear anything again. This time, I'm gonna bring more crap to store, so I'll be there longer. I'll bring my cell phone, and maybe even my camera to take some pictures for you all. Give you a better visualization of this place.

Oh, no sweat. I'm not going crazy over this, just thought it was a very interesting experience.

What if the owners themselves are doing something illegal there? You are a 'witness' and you didn't call the cops. Where does that leave you?

Are you serious?

Of course I can't. At this facility there was some piece of equipment that was playing some part of the signals over a speaker. There was no one inside as the door was padlocked from the outside. It was clearly a number of simultaneous, one-sided phone conversations I could hear. They were clear enough to have been recorded from outside the building if you'd wanted to.

I don't know enough about microwave transmission of telephone signal to know why or how. I don't really care one way or another. I only know that it was doing so. If I hike up that way again later this summer I'll see if it is still doing it.

Two things stand out here. It was late at night and the voices were faint and never changed tone and were low. Under certain conditions, among them, late night, open spaces and sudden barriers, noise has the ability to travel long, long distances. It's a freak phenomenon and it's a mixture of acoustics, physics and the environment.

The Church tool advantage of this to hear conversations of other priests or from their flock. I don't know how, but they built many churches, monasteries and abbeys where if you stand in a certain part of the building, you will be able to hear what is being said in another part, even all the way to the other end. These spots were sometimes put close together so the listener could walk and continue to listen. This can occur naturally, too.

I am a flat out skeptic so I don't believe in ghosts at all. However, this does not mean I don't believe you. I'm trying to offer a plausibe scenario other than a paranormal one.

But, it would be good if you call the police, as somebody mention.

I am skeptical as well. I won't deny the existence of paranomal activity - seems like it has happened to countless individuals -- but I won't go as far as saying I 100% believe in ghosts either. Could go either way in my book.

I don`t want to unsettle you, but hearing voices could be a first indication for a schizophrenia.

But also without having schizophrenia, our senses can fool us, specially in the night, when we are tired. Sometimes we want to believe in paranormal reasons, but if you reconsider the incident in a rational way (without wanting to believe) you will find a explanation for your spooky adventure.  old

Ahh, one can tell criminals from the law abiding by such generalized characteristics.

Okay, this nice, quiet elderly couple (I'll call the George and Gracie) are permitting a bunch of Satan worshippers to conduct human sacrifice rituals in one of the units. They didn't want to but were approached by their own wayward son who is a member. Others then explained to them that they could either go along and make some extra money or have their still-beating hearts plucked out of their chests and eaten by the congregation.

Or they are a legit-looking front for a drug cartel operation out of one of the units.

They could be the taliban, or Hasidic Scientologists!
It could be a secret NW Airlines conference on replacing the DC9s.

It could have been a few things: a radio left on or with an alarm that someone forgot was set, a screen saver (yes my computer came with a talking screen saver commercial on it- annoying.) an answering maching, and metal will sometimes actaully pick up radio transmissions too, or any number of other prosaic explanations.

That being said, in my family we've had more than our fair share of "creepy" experiences, mostly premonitions. While I am generally a very logical and factual thinker, I think it's fun to believe that I've been visited by ghosts rather than trying to analyze each strange coincidence.

As a spiritualist and medium, i can assure you that if that was the case, you havent imagined anything, the voices would have been there. I wont explain other methods of ways spirits can converse or let you know as this isnt the thread, and as i will probably get slated and the piss took out of me for it.

Dear NWA742,

As an airliners.net regular you have to hear voices. Everyone here hears voices, some just won't admit it.

Seriously: One or two people were probably inside the building but didn't come by car. The reason for why the voices appeared to "follow" you could be that the voices reverberated through the building.
