I doubt its a terrorist attack. They're not going to go after a 3 story building in a city full of skyscrapers.

Perhaps a gas leak...

NYC Fire Commissioner Nicholas Scoppetta says a gas explosion appears to be the cause of the building collapse.

Latest world is that one of the medical doctors who own/occupy the building may have blown him self up in an act of Suicide!!!
So far one dead, 3 injured.
The building is a 3 story townhouse on 62nd St. between Park and Madison. It is a serious situation, windows were blown out across the street, some firefighters/rescue people have been injured in their work. It is a real mess in the neighborhood.

Me too.. terror or no terror, it must be pretty scary. The "why would they go after..." mentality is often what terrorists hope for- but a three story building does seem a little puny for a terrorist attack- not that it's horrible for the people involved already...

Corrections: no one yet dead, but 11 people including people on the street and firefighers injured.
The story gets more crazy. Apparently the medical doctor who set the explosion off is still alive, but with burns over 70% of his body (a lovely twist of justice). He is an emergency room doctor at a nearby hospital and lived in the building.
Apparently the building was to be sold and the deal closed on it at the end of the month for $10,000,000 as a court ordered settlement of a nasty divorce from his ex-wife. Because of some complications in the ownership, he may not have gotten much out of the deal as well as losing his apartment so perhaps if he can win he will ruin the asset and go out in a blast of glory. What a fool.
He had sent an e-mail to the ex-wife telling her he was going to take his life. Then ConEd was called due to a gas smell by someone, so emergency services were on the scene quickly. This tool even used his cell phone while still in the rubble to help the EMT's find him.
Several streets or parts of them in the area are closed. The building is about 1 story of rubble. It's sad what people will do in their perveted spite against an ex-love.

Did anyone notice that Fox News did eight "FOX NEWS ALERT" announcements about this in one hour? Cripes. If they did that for every 3-story building fire in the country, they'd have to start four new channels to handle all their "FOX NOOSE ALERTS."

Big deal. A guy opens the gas valves, waits a few minutes, and strikes a match. Boom. I'm willing to bet it happens a few times a day throughout the country.

I have a friend who lives in the area as well as the fact that I almost became room mates with him in that apartment. As far as I know he is OK and it's probably an explosion from a gas leak of sorts.

I walked by Park on the way to my office on 60th, about 9.45 am and it was quite an impressive sight watching the firemen at work. Interestingly there was also a film shoot happening (Law and Order?) at about the same time a few blocks up. Quite a few choppers 'parked' above Central Park - you couldn't get away from the noise.

People were just walking by, not gawking. I think New Yorkers still suffer from post 9/11 trauma, and have no further appetite for any kind of bad news.

I wonder what really happened - was the explosion intended or a by-product of a suicide attempt?

Overall, there's a feeling of relief that nobody was killed.
