World Cup Official Shoots Himself

Tue Jul 11, 2006 10:51 pm

Fair use from the BBC:

Berlin's top World Cup official shot himself in the head just hours after the tournament ended and is now fighting for his life, police say.
Juergen Kiessling, 65, was rushed to hospital from his house in Reinickendorf, a suburb of Berlin, after a neighbour heard the shot.

The motive for the apparent suicide attempt is not yet clear.

German media report that he left two suicide notes - one for his daughter and one for his family.

Berlin hosted the World Cup final on Sunday, when fans watched Italy beat France on penalties.

Mr Kiessling was known as "Mister WM" (Mr World Cup) by colleagues in Berlin.

The tournament was widely seen as a great success for the host nation.

According to a Reuters article:
Citing a police source, the newspaper said Kiessling had "political" problems. German media said his condition remained life-threatening.

Poor guy. It must have been hard refeering the world cup...especially this year. People often do not realise that referees are people as well who have feelings etc etc

Didn't say he was a ref, only an "official."

Looks like someone had a lot of money on France.  Wink

Sorry?? That's a misunderstanding, this guy was not a referee, he was part of the organizing committee in Berlin, 65 years oldand the WC has nothing to do with what he did!

What did he do so wrong that he'd want to kill himself?

You dont need to do anything wrong to feel that Suicide is the next best option. Just last week, a friend of mine decided to stand on the edge of a 6 story building. She hadn't done anything wrong at all, just unlucky in health however she still felt that suicide was an easy way out. (She is better now)

He probably did it because of all the pressure in his job. I used to referee houseleague soccer games, and the crap I got from parents, coaches and players was unbelivable. I quit after three seasons because I couldn't take it anymore, and I was reffing little kids, I can't even imagine reffing in the World Cup. I wouldn't be suprised if he had recieved some death threats. Some people just don't understand that its just a game. Like the way they poured out into the streets and partied into the wee hours of the morning here in Toronto after their teams won a game; they did this for every game, even in the round robin. Maybe its just me, but I fail to understand how soccer fans get so wrapped up in the World Cup, that for the entire month, that is all they can think and care about; there is much more to life than soccer.

Probably realized soccer is a crashing bore as we have known all along.

An eminently sensible move under the circumstances.

Or got money from the Italians (wouldn't be the first time something like that was tried,  Wink) and then felt guilty?  Wink

Anyway, seriously, the reason by Reuters was that he had: "political" problems.

Unbelievable...do you guys actually READ or even remotely try to THINK before posting????

He was NOT A REFEREE, he was the ORGANIZER of those fan partys and public viewing areas on behalf of the City of Berlin...he had NOTHING to do with the WC per se!!

Jesus, some people are intellectually way beyond salvation, it seems!!

The man is 65 years old, he postponed old-age retirement just to be there...he was facing a big black hole in his life: Nothing to do anymore, no need for him on the job, that is, retirement, his wife dead, kids old enough to get out of the house...that's it!
