How Did You Learn English?

Wed Jul 12, 2006 3:53 am

Hi Everyone!

I started to learn English when I was ten and I really hated it! Me and my father went on a road trip to Germany, Belgium, Holland, France and Great Britain in 1990 when I was twelve at one gas station in GB I had to go to the toilet and you had to ask for the key very embarrassing I asked "Key, toilet!".

We where camping outside London and I wanted to buy some stuff behind the desk and I could not speak English so I just went behind the desk an grabbed the things I wanted!

And now I have travelled a lot around the world and my English is great and I speak English every day at my work at ARN airport. I have learned Spanish aswell! what about you?

I learnt english when I was 3 Big grin because I'm english.lol. Honestly though, I would love to be able to speak to languages fluently! I did learn abit of Irish, German, and French at school, but I can't remember any of it now. I need to reserve brain space for other things now!

I started english courses at school when I was 13. However I had the chance to stay 2 months in Cambridge UK and 2 months in Perth... and a month in an english speaking country is better than 10 years at school!  Big grin
Also use it every single day at work!

Started to "learn" English from age 2 on, thanks to my parents taking me with them to the US on a regular basis. School English was mostly just rehearsing what I had already learned  Silly .

During the 4th grade on Elementary School and then again in highschool. Every single year, whether because I changed schools or new teachers got hired I got stuck with like 5 years working on the verb to BE.

I am, you are, he is, she is, it is, we are, you are, they are...

My pronunciation improved a lot watching sitcoms with the close-caption feature and talking to tourists in Cancun where I used to live. Finally, I lived in Texas for some time,

Y'all have a good one! Big grin

Discussing profound topics on a.net, such as "Is Boeing better than Airbus?", "When will NW get rid of their DC-9s?" or "Show a picture of your pet".

I still have trouble asking for directions, though.

Started when I was in Pre-school - I was 4. All the way up, till graduation, I was in an intense 8-hr a day english-speaking environment. Our school was british, our teachers were too.

Also, thanks to my TV for providing endless hours of sitcoms and drama series like Commander in Chief, Will and Grace, One Tree Hill, etc.

I think the TV helped me improve my understanding of the culture which takes someone to improve the language that they are speaking, when not native.

Cheers! wave

Just like Gastón, I started in preschool (only I was 3  Silly ). Half of my classes were in English, so I was talking rather fluently by the time I finished 6th grade.

After graduating from high school, I decided to continue my language studies and enrolled in an English - Spanish translation program. I'm not studying English at the moment, but I deal with it every day at work; that helps me keep up with my skills.

Namibia, while it has English as an official language, is not a big English speaking nation (only 6% or some number like that speak it). I learned English because my parents are both Americans, from the western suburbs of Chicago actually, and came to Namibia just a year before I was born (they came in 1982, I was born December 1983), and English was spoken at home growing up. Therefore, despite my being non-American born and raised, I speak with a perfect American accent...Chicago to be exact (Chicaaaago)

I have not yet learned English, but I do speak American quite well. It almost sounds English, but without the accent.

I started with English in 5th grade, when I was 10, and then with Television and all that, I started to get the hang of it very quickly. Nowadays I'm doing English to German translations.

Technically, English wasn't the first language I learned...my first word was in Finnish!

After that of course, it was all English. I still jokingly refer to it as my second language though...

I spoke with sign language first actually Silly. But hated it, quickly dropped it, and I took 3 years to learn English/American w/e it is.

I was fluent in it by 4 or 5. Took me longer being Deaf but I improved quite a bit.

But its hard when you have people like Janni forcing me to say Arse instead of Ass. Silly

Fourth grade, ten years old, I was handed a school book with the title "English of Today". Later came business school and employment in a British multinational company in which even the French colleagues talk English.

That's pretty ordinary for most Europeans these days, I guess.

I would recommend that Scotsmen did the same. The Scotmen are pretty much the only Europeans who never learn English language these days.

Another way to learn English.....

I have a niece - pure Danish - who is married to a Londoner. They decided before their first child was born that mom would continue always to talk Danish while dad would always talk English.

Everybody in the family thought that it was bad for the poor child. She would mix everything up in a mess. But not so. Before she was three, she spoke two languages.

There are, however, some words which such a child don't learn when talking English to adult people only. And other words which they CERTAINLY learn. That created a funny episode when she was four and her five years old cousin came over from London.

The cousin, who is accustomed to the just over postal stamp size gardens in London, said: "Oh, what a massive garden you have".
Niece said: "No, our garden isn't messy".

Yeah, I think you are right, at least about European a.net users.

But what about our American friends? Their first two words must have been "Airbus" and "subsidize".

My language history is most typical in Finland:

I started to learn English at school when I was nine, four years later I started with Swedish (all Finns have to learn at least the basics of the both official languages) and finally German from age 14.

I use English almost daily, but unfortunately not practising
my Swedish enough, trying to watch the Swedish-Finnish TV (FST) regularly though...
My German.. well I still can read the menu.

I started learning English at the same time I started learning Spanish. The problem is that I never really cared for English that much until I moved to the States for 4 years. Most people say I don't have an accent, but sometimes you can hear a slight Spanish accent... especially when pronouncing certain words like "that" which is a result of me thinking English was a "stupid language" when I was younger... Eh well. Life goes on.

I also originally learnt British English... so while I speak like an American I write like a Brit (you know... I spell colour the right way  Wink )
