French Lawyer: Legal Challenge To World Cup Result

Thu Jul 13, 2006 1:16 am

I think there is little doubt that instant replay was used to eject Zidane and that FIFA is just sticking to their guns on the issue because they do not believe anyone can prove otherwise - so if that is the case, than while I am not sure what the proper recourse would be, something significant needs happen.

Legal challenge to World Cup result

A French lawyer plans to mount a legal challenge to the World Cup final result to establish whether the expulsion of Zinedine Zidane was within the rules.

Mehana Mouhou said he intended to ask a Paris court to question the fourth official to ascertain whether he had illegally used videotape to check what had happened.

"If a judge determines that illegal methods were used, the proper consequences must be drawn," he said. "That means that Zidane should never have been sent off and it would be impossible to predict what the match result would have been and it should be replayed."

Mouhou said he was acting on behalf of "several football clubs."

Whining refers to the past - you miss the point of this lawyers action: they want to clarify just exactly how FIFA intends to address a future scenario such as this where it was all but obvious that video replay was used to validate a red card.

Let's face it - such a large field with just 1 ref, two side judges, and perhaps a backup ref on the sidelines, your bound to miss something and will never be able to see everything all the time. Note that a number of FC's had encouraged this lawyer to press his case? Sure, the lawyer is using a lofty possible result in the claim, but they are just doing that to get the attention to the real topic at hand seriously addressed; I don't think he or anyone seriously expects Italy to be stripped of their World Cup victory, (regardless however unscrupulous it may be!  Smile )

Wow. And I thought the US was the world leader in the filing of frivolous and ridiculous lawsuits.

The lawyers of course are putting up a choice. If they at FIFA try to make it rough for Zidane, then legal action from their side will be taken against that Italian player. Defence strategies will be applied against whomever. Zidane for sure has realized as quickly as anybody else that the matter is not solved by some simple declarations. And he of course is determined to defend himself, as for him, a potential career as referee/coach/functionary is at stake which is worth millions of Euro.
