B-Class Car Opinions

Thu Jul 13, 2006 4:45 am

Those of you outside the U.S. have been exposed to many of the sub-compact "B-class" cars that are just now coming to the U.S. But for those of us here in the states, it is a new concept. Specifically, the following cars come to mind:

Honda Fit
Nissan Versa
Toyota Yaris
Scion xA/xB
Kia Rio
Hyundai Accent
Upcoming Chevy Aveo redesign

What are your opinions on any of these vehicles? The car magazines seem to prefer the Honda Fit, but it is about $3,000 more than the others.

To me, the Yaris looks cartoonish, plus I hate the center-mounted guages. Actually, the styling on most of these cars looks a little garish. The Hyundai and Kia are much more conventionally styled, to the point of looking bland, but I think I prefer the blandness to the Pixar-style Yaris.

I thought a B-car was defined as one:

A. Whose RPM Drops by 20% or more when the air conditioning is turned on.

B. That can be converted from left-hand drive to right-hand drive by its owner in less than one hour. (That's why the gauges are center-mounted.)

C. That has 12-inch or smaller wheels.

Those little wheels look so damned funny. Here's a car trying to look so cool sitting on a set of skateboard bogies.

It's funny how this "new" class of cars are all the rage.
I just read an article in Car and driver this month that goes on to say how these cars are all bigger, heavier, and more luxurious than some of the cars that we regularly drove here in the states years ago. They made a comparison of the Honda Fit, versus the old VW Rabbit (Golf). The Rabbit was smaller and lighter than the Fit. Even Hondas new Civic is larger, heavier, and better equipped than the original Accord.

It would seem that these new sub-compacts are only coming to the states now, because the old models have grown up-market.

My glass is neither 1/2 empty nor 1/2 full, rather, the glass itself is twice as big as it should be.
