Enough With Middle East Topics!

Fri Jul 14, 2006 1:49 am

Really do we need a thread for every time 'Hezbollah junior junior agitant in training just went out to lunch' or 'Israeli tank just got a rock thrown at it'.

I used to care about this conflict, I no longer do which is why I never reply to the dozen of daily threads about it that show up. In a way I wish the World Cup lasted for ever, it gave people in that area a lull to focus on other things and you saw how things quieted down around the world. As soon as it was over, bombings here and there, UN action, Middle East turmoil.

I feel bad for the mostly passive people on both the Israeli and Arab sides that are hostage to the whims of their polititians and a bunch of hard-liners, but hey... Bottom line is that it is their societies and just like other countries are ultimately judged not by what they say but by what they do, the same it is with both sides in the Middle East.

Both sides, including in THIS FORUM, are so physically and mentally deeply invested in whichever side they believe has more 'legitimacy' that no matter what they will not compromise about the other side. And that is the exact problem here: these are societies that simply cannot compromise.

The destruction of Israel is a non-starter (Arabs).

The desintegration of the West Bank into territorial 'guettos' without any continuation is a non-starter (Israelis).

Thus, it will never be resolved short of one side achieving complete victory, with all the bone-chilling repercutions that intails.

The rest of the countries of the world, well at least countries like Argentina, should just butt out and mind their own business. Some countries like the US of course have become entrapped in the quicksand so they have no choice.

There are no such threads and you know it.

There aren't near as many threads, the current crisis has started a few days ago and you can just skip the threads you don't like.

I usually don't care if there are 1 million threads of anything, but yes, there are too many threads about singular events in the latest crisis, that could be accomodated in one or two threads.

Don't like them, don't read them, simple as that.

This is a serious, serious situation brewing, and it could explode into a general war. I don't see a problem with so much discussion on it.

I am not saying it is not a serious situation, but I think that the threads could be consolidated down.

Different sub-plots within this conflict. I think it deserves all these threads, to be honest.

You really think it is a 'discussion'? Please Falcon84, tell me you're kidding.

You're responses yesterday in the 'opinions on Muslims' thread (which I believe has been deleted) showed me that you don't 'discuss', you think you're right and won't listen to anyone else.

The same goes for 80%+ of the other people posting in these types of threads. They watch some tv, maybe read a few websites and magazines and that is it. Most will never have even been there.

If they have been to Israel, they only see one side, if they have been to Lebanon, Syria etc., then they have only seen the other side. You need to visit all of these countries, speak to locals and maybe then, you will get a true idea of what is/has happened.

And the changing of flags is pathetic IMO. What exactly does everyone hope to achieve by waiving those flags? To show each other what 'side' you are on?

You didn't seem to be complaining when the world cup threads were going on... and this is a very major event, with lots going on. Problem is, Derico, if this was something to do with Argentina, you'd be starting threads by the truckload.

No I don't. For example there is a huge severe weather situation in Argentina right now, with winds in areas up to 100 miles and hour... yes MAJOR hurricane strength. And trees down and the like. And in Chile people are dead and 50,000 homeless because of the precarious homes.

There is not one thread here about it. And I do not post it as I know people don't care, it's just a fact of life.

The World Cup was a POSITIVE everyone, you, me, Arabs, Africans, Europeans, North Americans, Australians could participate. It gets heated but it's the best venue for it. Sport rather than war.

Trust me, Derico, i'd rather be watching a sports event than this, but this is something much more important than a football tournament. You have a conflict with the potential to turn into a disaster for the entire region, with many civilians dying - I think that justifies having several topics about it.

Again, I am not saying it is not important. I am not complaining about topics that deal with different areas about the issue.

I was complaining that every new little detail of the current military situation gets a new post. They could just post it in the prior thread.

This is quite true. The other day we had something like 5 threads started all on the same day with every news item about the captured soldier.

It's because everyone wants to post the latest article that 'proves' their side is correct. They feel that the latest gunshot is so important that it will be lost in a larger thread and not 'convince' everyone that they are right. We all know this is total BS, since everyone has already made up their mind. But if they start a thread about the evils of the other side, somehow that will justify their own position, as well as their attacks on others. Of course, all the threads end up the same, so the 'sub-plot' hypothesis is completely false. All this crap can easily be condensed into a thread or two.

Sure...  sarcastic  You don't post it because you already know people don't care.

Tell you what, you'd get the same "oh that's terrible, my thoughts are with the victims" responses that you can see in threads about e.g. tornados in the US midwest.

And yes, that is also why I don't post it. But if it's a freakish event then I might be persuaded to.

I think you're a hypocrite. You alone started 6 separate World Cup related threats since July 1 and participated in countless more. In the big scope of things I would rank instability in the Middle East much higher than "thank goodness the ref wasn't European"

It's a more positive event than the Middle East, don't you think? And a global event as supposed to a regional event. If a regional event deserves 10 different threads, then a WC deserves more since many people were interested.

Uhhm... Exactly. So no load of bull. Specially since I didn't say 'you can't talk about this'. Just do it in one of the designated threads.

It's not about what you or I think. An internet forum is about expression. People post about what they find interesting and anyone can (but need not) click on any of the threads and follow the topics that are of interest to them.

It's hypocrisy to the extreme for someone who himself has started 6 topics on one issue, examing every minute aspect of the event, to criticize others for doing the same thing about evens that concern them.

What difference does it make if the World Cup was less "negative" (which is obviously true) than the situation in the middle east?

The World Cup is a game and is therefore not terribly important. War and killing are war and killing and by definition are more important than a sporting event. It seems altogether fitting to me that a more important subject should spawn more discussion than a less-important subject.

I will repeat what I have said here, but not in my own words.

"We now have 8-10 active threads on this subject. Since this thread deals with the initial actions that occured on the southern border of Lebanon, and the events have now developed, I am locking this thread so that we can start consolidating this topic."
