$800 Million Bridge

Fri Jul 14, 2006 8:33 am

Officials broke ground today on the new Twin Spans Interstate 10 bridge connecting New Orleans and Slidell, Louisiana. The current bridge, as you may recall, was severly damaged by Hurricane Katrina last year.

Here is a paragraph from the article...

"The new $803 million bridge will be built just east of the current I-10 bridge. Though it’s projected to be completed in five years, the westbound span of the bridge should be finished by 2009. Officials said the bridge would be built six lanes wide and 30 feet high. A high performance concrete will be used in order to protect the bridge from storm surge and salt water corrosion."

That is significantly higher than the current Twin Span. How exactly are they going to get people on and off the bridge. Right now, I-10 leads directly onto the Twin Span, which starts out as a causeway.

Im guessing a "ramp" at each end?

By the way - $800 million is a bloomin lot for a bridge!

Remember, most of the money given out in NO goes towards strip clubs and other activities, so that is the reason for the large sum.

That is cheap compared to what they spent in Alaska. This isn't exactly a short little bridge either Lee. It is about 9 miles long and requires a drawbridge section.

That would make things more expensive. I would think that they would do a simple realignment of the highway

LOL! That's what I was going to say....they should call Ted Stevens for advice on pork and they could easily make that a $2B bridge before all is said and done.

A drawbridge on a transcon interstate?!? I thought the AASHTO wanted to get rid of all drawbridges in the interstate system, not add new ones?

Not by frackin' much, and those bridges in Alaska are still a pipe dream . . .

Not that I think we need them or anything - quite a waste IMO - but don't pick on us for our pork, at least WE can take care of ourselves instead of screaming how the federal gov't fucked us over and then re-electing an incompetent slug into city hall.

For your sake, lets just hope they don't hire the same people that built Boston's 14.5 billion dollar tunnel......

A drawbridge? Why does it need a drawbridge when it currently doesn't have one?

You must be confusing the I-10 twin spans that don't have a drawbridge with the Lake Ponchartrain Causeway that does have a drawbridge on the north span.

It's a long bridge (as has been stated) and that is cheap for Louisiana IMO. I'm guessing this cost doesn't include all the graft and corruption that the local yokel politicians will demand.

BTW, what is up with the current bridges on I-10? Are they repaired or is it still broken. If still broken how much does traffic suck?

I believe that at least one of the two spans has been repaired.

Both spans have been repaired, and traffic is rolling on both spans in both directions.

There is no drawbridge on that section.

I'd like to see I-10 to the west expanded to three lanes in both directions, as well, at least as far as the second LaPlace exit (exit 206, I believe).
