Halfway Through 2006, How Will You Remember It?

Sat Jul 15, 2006 1:14 pm

We're more than halfway through 2006, and so far, it's turning out to be a mostly forgettable year.

1. War in Iraq: Progress is somewhat slow. Sectarian violence continues.

2. New Israel-Lebanon war: Here we go again.

3. North Korea: A dictator with nukes, and now with long-range missiles. Just brilliant.

4. Iran: Soon to join the nuclear club. Russia and China stand in the way of UN Security Council action.

5. Oil prices: Through the roof.

To 2006: So far, you haven't failed to disappoint.

I will remember the first half of 2006 as 6 months during which I kept mistakenly writing the date "__/__/05"

I'm looking forward to a more correct second half.
I'm watching Jeopardy. The category is worst Madonna songs. "This one from 1987 is terrible".

Really really high (and still climbing) oil prices, and me having to sell my beloved V-8 truck because of it!!

Maybe energy will still be a key issue come 2008, and the newly elected president and congress will actually begin to do something about it!!

Travel, travel, travel, travel, travel - thanks to my new job, I've already done more flights this year than the whole of the previous year, been to 7 new countries, with an 8th coming up, flown on a shedload of new airlines, it's been great. Woohooo - yay 2006 !

As for the world being difficult and badly behaved, well let them, I'd say. Not my problem.

Quoting AerospaceFan (Thread starter):
1. War in Iraq: Progress is somewhat slow.

Quoting AerospaceFan (Thread starter):
2. New Israel-Lebanon war: Here we go again.

 checkmark

Quoting AerospaceFan (Thread starter):
3. North Korea: A dictator with nukes, and now with long-range missiles. Just brilliant.

Why the hell don't Russia and China do something about it? They're as much in danger as the Western World, Japan and Australia are.

Quoting AerospaceFan (Thread starter):
4. Iran: Soon to join the nuclear club. Russia and China stand in the way of UN Security Council action.

Same as with North Korea.

Quoting AerospaceFan (Thread starter):
5. Oil prices: Through the roof.

And I predict by the end of the year, we might be close to $90 a barrel.

I would also add to the list:

6. This was the year of the most controversial Football World Cup Final in the history of Football.
7. Me joining A.net after a year and a half of lurking. Big grin

RE: Halfway Through 2006, How Will You Remember It?

Sun Jul 16, 2006 4:13 am

This is the year in which I have made giant strides towards my medical career goals. As some of you may know, I have been studying for 2 years in London at King's College London to be a research doctor in craniofacial development.

This summer was my first real experience in laboratory research. I have been doing a summer student research project at Guy's Hospital (in their craniofacial department), studying the expression of certain genes in embryonic craniofacial development. I have been doing this as part of my training (it was not required, but I took the opportunity quickly). This is part of Wellcome Trust UK's summer research studentship grant programme.

So 2006 is quite a memorable year for me, a giant step towards my goal of craniofacial research medicine. This coming school year (2006/2007) at KCL will be focused entirely on craniofacial development, including a major research project and thesis. I also have to think about applying for a PhD programme within this year!

By the way, I saw aviation history made on May 18--when the A380 debuted at LHR! My photo of this historic event:

Back home in New Zealand 'experts' are prediciting petrol prices will reach $2 per litre before the end of the year. It will then cost me close to $120 to fill up my large car, compared to $80 when I last filled it up in late May. Man the fun of owning a big car.

I will remember 2006 because this is the year that changed my life forever, as I'm currently in the USA on an International Exchange Programme intill mid August. I'm hoping to change my life more by returning on the same programme next year. I'm a Christian Camp Counsellar on Summer Camp 2006 and I'm enjoying every minute of it  Smile
