Beirut As I Know It (video)

Sun Jul 16, 2006 2:41 am

I have always wanted to make a video of beirut and what I like about it.
Now time is running short... So I just quickly made one just from driving from my home to the McDonalds.

Hope one day everything will be ok again and I'll be able to make a video of all the rest, the people, the clubs, the nature...

enjoy

BTW the conversation between me and the drive-through girl goes like this:
Her: Are you leaving the country?
Me: Yeah?
Her Are you going to leave the country?
Me: Uh Yes but now now
Her: Leave, it's better

Also note the 2 syrian taxies ( the white and the yellow old american cars ) at 3:24

Nice video. Incredibly calm, can't tell from the video if anything is wrong over there. Hang in there, while I don't see one Arab or Muslim country stepping up asking to cut the crap, I say Lebanese people may not have the idea of what over whelming majority of people support them. Hang in there!!!

The driving was totally scary but I enjoyed the video!

(BTW, is it normal to just make left turns directly in front of oncoming traffic?) Wow!

It's interesting, the more photos / videos I see from Beirut, the more I want to visit Lebanon. (Or the more I regret that I haven't visited Beirut before the invasion). From all I can see and read, Beirut must be an incredibly vivid, beautiful and interesting City with a unique atmosphere.

I'm afraid the region won't be safe for tourism for years to come.

I'm really on nobody's side in this war, in my opinion both sides have done terrible things.

It's so absurd that this war isn't about land, resources or money, but about religion, which is supposed to teach us to love and peace.

Oh how beautiful the world would be if we'd all get along as friends.

A couple more questions-

What song did you set that to? I can't get it out of my head now!
Also, what are conditions like there? Is it hard to get out now, are the roads crammed heading to Syria? It would be nice to have a first hand news source and not just what the news is telling me..

Be safe and take care!

Most wars are about power and influence, and this one surely counts as that.

I wanted to visit BEY since I saw this thread: Beirut From A Tethered Gas Balloon At 150 Meters (by BA Jun 28 2006 in Non Aviation)

As I wrote in reply #4 of the aforementioned thread, I wanted to go to BEY after the World Cup (i.e. now) and I already looked for flights. All airlines had either pretty high fares or retarded flight times (e.g. 18 hours stopover at CDG, etc.), I am so glad that I didn't book a flight and that I am not there at the moment.

Take care and keep us updated.

I second that! Wouldn't be nice to be on the first flight landing in BEY once the airport is open and running again?

Good luck Rolfen and take care.

What you saw is normal driving  yes
I remember once a relative who lives in the state decided to rent a car and drive in lebanon.
At the first crossing he was confronted with a similar situation, and he froze for 5 minutes, causing a long queue behind him, before finally gathering the guts to move on.

It's just a matter of slowly going forward, feet by feet, until an oncoming car slows down for you.
Cars here dont stop, they just slow down, and that's your cue to go forward. If you dont, they'll just pass you. It's quite competive driving.

It's the first track of this mix.
You can also download the mix on the link above.

The roads are empty as soon as the sun sets...
All nighlife spots are totally deserted, it's a strange and very depressing (for me) sight. To spare electricity, parts of the public lighting are not lit at night.

We hear explosions in the afternoon and at night, but there's no danger whatsoever in my part of the city. They are just bombing part of the south-west suburbs, around the airport. It's a tragedy for the civilians who live there.
We still get decent electricity. Other then that, the daytime (work, etc..) is more or less normal.

Thanks so much for the positive feedback  yes , I'll definitely make more (and better) videos when the time is right.

ROFL! Welcome to the Middle East... Lebanon is the worst in the entire Arab world, probably as a result of two decades of lawlessness during the civil war. To Lebanese people, a traffic light is nothing more than a yield sign. I don't like the way people drive here in the US... its too organised and not chaotic enough  Silly

Here's a view of a big part of Beirut seen from the town of Brumanna... Brumanna High School in specific, I was in that school for 3 weeks in a summer camp back in 2003:

As I have said before, Beirut is my favourite city in the entire Arab world... I hope its fate isn't the same as it was 20 years ago.

Excellent video, thanks for sharing; you wouldn't believe that Beirut is under seige!

BTW, can't believe you went to McDonalds when there is a Burger King just around the corner!  Silly

I liked it when visiting Beirut. It is NOT as stubborn as in ZRH but not as chaotic as in Cairo.

Quoting Sabena332 (Reply 10):

but please do NOT copy it when coming to the ZRH-meet. ZRH-policemen do NOT like it !
