Haha, I laughed.

Anyway...in terms of restaurant food, I'd go with chicken tikka masala, chicken vindaloo, and palak paneer (all with garlic naan). For south Indian restaurant food, I'd probably go with a Mysore masala dosa or an onion uttapam.

For home-cooked food (all south Indian), spinach kuttu, various sambars and rasams, idli, and of course my grandmother's gulab jamun (seriously, you will never have better jamun ANYWHERE).

I love Indian food in general, and I second Westy, just about anything Jaysit (or Hawk or any of the local A.nutters of Indian background) mentions is wonderful. But somehow I'd always missed Butter Chicken - up until this summer. This has become my new favorite, and I'm on a quest to learn how to make it at home. You're all invited when I finally master it.

I look forward to hear the comment of an Indian or somebody of Indian origin. Why? Because I am not really sure that this really IS Indian cuisine.

I remember there used to be a nice Indian restaurant, just a few metres away from my old apartment in Hamburg. I don't remember what we ate, but it was great.

Unfortunately, the owner, who's Indian, decided to change his restaurant and made it an Italian restaurant, which was also pretty nice though.

We used to eat Indian food every now and then, but now, it's always the same. I wouldn't mind trying this Butter Chicken you're all mentioning.

Dang, these threads always hit me during the mid-morning, "jeez... two more hours to lunch" slump.

Guess we'll have to go out for Indian today. As to my favorite dish--I really like just about all of it, so it's hard to choose. Today, chicken vindaloo and a veggie biriyani sounds good, with plain naan.

To be honest, I have no idea if it is 'authentic' Indian food. I discovered a new Indian restaurant in San Francisco this summer, and they had it on the menu. The rest of the menu was recognizable and the dishes were the traditional preperations I've come to love, but this was a new one for me. I've since had it a couple other places, but I've never asked about its origins. For all I know, it could be the Fajitas of Indian food.

FWIW - A quick Google of Butter Chicken does bring it up in several Indian recipe collections, also listed as Chicken Makhani.

I absolutely adore chicken vindaloo, the hotter the better. Unfortunately, Fairbanks has no Indian restaurants, otherwise I would be eating vindaloo at least once a week.

I would kill for a chicken vindaloo with hot buttered naan, and a mango lassa right about now. Throw in some chicken pakora as well, and I'd be in hog heaven.

Actually, I just finished reading a wonderful book "Curry" published by Oxford University Press.

http://www.oup.com/us/catalog/genera...opology/?view=usa&ci=9780195172416

Indian food was very different before the the Portuguese brought in Chilies, Tomatoes, Potatoes and many other things from the New World that make up Indian food today. The older cuisine was more 'Vedic' - Black Pepper, Cardamom, Cinnamon and other indigenous spices formed the basis of that cuisine.

Mughlai Food, which most people associate with Indian Food, was born with the marriage of Goanese food with the cuisine the Mughals brought with them via Persia - fragrant rice, mild kebabs and so on. In the courts of Lucknow, with John Bull looking on,this style of cuisine came into its own.

As for Chicken Tikka Masala, it was allegedly invented in England by a Bangladeshi, but then, most Indian cooking is a fusion of many influences.

Dey,

South Indian Food Top Ten - eat with hand on Banana leaf- no utensils allowed:

1. Idli with Ghotsu/Molahapodi or Vengayam Sambar served from a bucket.
2. 'Kal' Thosai
3. 'Mysore Rasam'
4. Besibelabhat - Sambar Rice.
5 Murungka Sambar.
6. Parka Pittlai
7. Chettiar Cuisine - Chicken Chettinad, fabulous Koorma (not Korma).
8. Hyderabad Cusine - Amazing, mouth watering Biryani, ten-alarm mango pickle.
9. Kerala - Aviyal, Shrimp in Coconut Curry.
10. Finish above with a 'Rumani' mango.

Alas, I may never get to taste these dishes again...(self pity, self pity)

Tandoori (oven) is a good cooking method. If you want to tease an Indian cook just ask him about his pizza-oven ! But I prefer lamb/mutton to chicken, and beef as alternative, still before chicken.

I'll take any of it. I have a standing date with my fiance for dinner at least once a month at an Indian restaurant. I never remember the name of the dishes, but it really doesn't matter, I can point to just about anything on the menu and find it incredibly enjoyable.

I recently gave the yogurt/mango/cocnut milk smoothie concoction (sorry, showing my ignorance again) a shot. I think I ordered two more in rapid succession, it tasted perfect with the curried dish I was eating.....

At my local i'll always order.....

Chicken Tikka Madras
Bombay Aloo
Pilau Rice
Garlic Naan

Sometimes i have a Balti instead of the Madras.

I cook a lot myself actually, tastes pretty good, but different to the curry houses (not always in a bad way).

Anyone else cook them out there? I'm always looking out for some tips!
