Another Computer Question - SVCHOST.EXE

Wed Jul 19, 2006 4:23 am

Can anyone help identifyng why i have 7(!) SVCHOST.exe running on my laptop? I have looked in my task manager and amongst other processes i have:

Process User Name Mem Usage
svchost.exe System 1,932
svchost.exe Network service 1,712
svchost.exe System 23,652
svchost.exe Network service 1,680
svchost.exe Local service 3,093
svchost.exe System 1,456
svchost.exe System 2,956

Shouldn't i only have one svchost running (system)? Are these viruses/spyware? I have an antivirus program running.

Sorry, i just have no idea when it comes to these things, my laptop is been quite slow recently and its really pissing me off now! I have tried search the web, can't find anything really, some IT forums sugggesting it may be spyware.

Many thanks for help.

I assume you googled "SVCHOST.EXE"? That's what I'd have recommended. I too have seven instances of that exe file running, however I haven't noticed anything unusual about my PC.

As Aloges says, Google for a full explanation, but basically its a WinXP system that processes executed DLLs from other apps/systems. It'll fire up multiple times depending on what's running. Nothing wrong with it.

From the Microsoft website:

A description of Svchost.exe in Windows XP Pro
Article ID : 314056
Last Review : April 26, 2006
Revision : 1.5

INTRODUCTION
This article describes Svchost.exe and its functions. Svchost.exe is a generic host process name for services that run from dynamic-link libraries (DLLs).

MORE INFORMATION
The Svchost.exe file is located in the %SystemRoot%System32 folder. At startup, Svchost.exe checks the services part of the registry to construct a list of services that it must load. Multiple instances of Svchost.exe can run at the same time. Each Svchost.exe session can contain a grouping of services. Therefore, separate services can run, depending on how and where Svchost.exe is started. This grouping of services permits better control and easier debugging.

(I also have seven instances of this file running on my own computer)

This is normal. There can be more than seven going at once.

Have your task manager sorted by memory usage and look which applications are using most of your memory (and check if you really need them).
Plus, try to kill unnecessary autostart tasks. And defrag your HD. If that doesn't help, re-install Windows. Computers are not like humans, they don't just get slower with age. It's Windows that accumulates too much garbage (well, that is kinda human, then...  Wink ).

Try re-installing everything from scratch before you spend a couple hundred bucks on new hardware. But before re-installation, make sure you have a complete backup of all your data (the entire hard drive) on an external storage medium.  Wink

This could be a sign of infection by virus or spyware. Computers don't just 'slow down' for no reason. Do what Aloges suggests and also run a complete virus and spy-ware scan.

Just as a heads up, there was a trojan going around on the AIM network that spoofs SVCHOST and puts it in the windows folder to do it's own devious things, but it's pretty easy to block and kill. I think all the trojan plants is this file, and add a registry item to run on startup.
