Did George Really Give Angela A Massage?

Thu Jul 20, 2006 1:35 pm

If you do a Google News search using the terms, "Yo, Blair", you'll find an abundance of British newspaper articles largely criticizing both President Bush and Prime Minister Blair for their Candid Camera-style moment at the G-8 Summit in St. Petersburg some days ago.

For example, in one typical article, the Prime Minister was described as acting like a mere "courtier" in the "court" of George Bush. See, e.g., http://www.opendemocracy.net/democracy-americanpower/yo_blair_3750.jsp.

Most articles I found from "across the pond", so to speak, criticized the Prime Minister for acting like the President's subordinate. One article allegedly began with the title, "Yo, Bush! Treat our prime minister with respect!", or some such thing.

But to top it all off, I was surprised to see the description of President Bush's behavior as having caused the Chancellor of Germany to throw up her hands in shock. The reason? An alleged shoulder massage.

See:

(Blog)

http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/blogs/...ate/detail?blogid=18&entry_id=7217

Did this actually happen? Fascinating!

What, exactly, was in the water they were serving at the Summit, I wonder?

To me, much seems to be being made of very little. On a personal level, the President and the Chancellor obviously seemed to like each other. After all, what's a little shoulder massage between friends?

And even if it did happen, I think that Mr. Bush was only trying to be friendly. It would be a shame if too much is read into his gesture.

Bush has always struck me as a kind of guy who you're talking about politics with during a BBQ that's got a buz going, lol.

Either way, I've heard that Chancellor Mercel (sp?) is kind of a little tense in public, is that true or am I ill informed

I'm afraid the reference doesn't ring a bell. Was it one of those Simpsons Halloween specials?

In any event, I must visit St. Petersburg, Russia one of these days. I'm not the President's age, so whatever it is that made him and the Chancellor so... delightfully friendly... might very well work with me, too. I hear they have some beautiful women there.

He's a straightforward type of guy. Very little pretense about him, it seems to me.

He's a bit like Lyndon B. Johnson in that way. Johnson was also a stereotypical Texan.

She strikes me as very earnest and a bit shy, for a politician. I don't know if she is tense; I haven't heard either way.

Yep, it did have seen it shortly on N-TV (a German News Station) even before Bild has printed the picture. But N-TV made no story to it, like Bild did.

Well, having seen the video just moments ago, I must admit that GWB was acting a bit mischievous.

Thank you for that information; I appreciate it.

Yes, when Kang and Kotos assume the form of Bob Dole and Bill Clinton and they are walking down the streets holding hands.

What an embarrassing meeting for the USA. First GWB utters the "S" word while chewing food with an open mouth, interspersed with the occasional release of a crumb projectile. Now he is found to be touching fellow world leaders as if they were all sharing a martini together in his personal hottub.

Do you think the graduates of Yale are proud of this man? Do you think his fellow Bonesmen are proud to call him a "Brother"? Good grief.

I think that, these days, you could be right.

In retrospect, it was not a wise thing for the President to have done, regardless of his intent. Viewing the video, it seems reasonable to conclude that the attention given to Chancellor Merkel was inappropriate and unwelcome.

I'm glad we agree.

Speaking of LBJ, here is my second-favorite story about that famous Texan:

LBJ arrived at an Air Force base and exited his limousine. An Airman next to him noticed where the President was headed and hurriedly pointed the Commander in Chief to his aircraft. "Mr. President," he said, "Your plane is this way."

LBJ stopped suddenly and looked at the young officer.

"Son," the President said with a drawl, "These here are all my planes."

(Don't ask me about my most favorite LBJ story. )

According to those reports I came across it wasn't protest. She was surprised at first but then she was more kind of amused.
Who cares anyway, maybe it's inappropriate but it's certainly nothing embarrassing like Berlusconi was when he dressed as a pirate.

I'm back and I've regain the mood to participate.

I don't think it is appropiate for any head of state to behave in that manner when in a public setting. If they were in a private meeting, then, to each his own, but not in public. That's what protocol is there for, and even if it may see to be harsh with its rules, it's there for something. If in the US there is an ongoing debate about female rights and what constitutes sexual harrasment among other issues, the representative of the people cannot show himself in a position where any of his constituents would be severly punished these days, as Diamond correctly pointed that out.

I hope this thread does not turn into a debate on the IQ of GWB or the GOP and the Democrats. What he did was show a lack of common sense and stately behavior.

My favorite LBJ story is that he was the one who did much to develop Houston, where I lived for three years and is one of my favorite cities. Thanks, LBJ.

Hello, AR385! Welcome back.

I must say it took the mainstream U.S. media long enough to pick up on this story. It made the rounds only yesterday, whereas in Europe, the story is already several days old.

Regarding LBJ and Houston, I am inclined to agree. LBJ was a man of many motives, and some of them were quite helpful to his home state. Johnson Space Center is well-named for the President, I would venture.
What's fair is fair.

He looked like a 2 year old when I saw him chewing with his mouth wide open. It reminded me of a cow chewing its cud.

Remember the flack LBJ got when he lifted his beagle by its ears in 1964? It was quite a big deal when it happened. LBJ naively claimed he hadn't done anything wrong. It's the same naivity that GWB has.

GWB sometimes like to act too friendly with people, even if it is inappropate in such settings. To me part is his ignorance as to other cultures. He has traveled little and rarely tried to learn about them (except perhaps Mexico). Another part is from only being around very tight circle of other rich people and the 'good old boy' network from school days, through Yale, and his adult life in Texas, limiting his exposure. A third part may be his need for attention and to keep it.
GWB has a strange attitude and respect for women. He apparently admired his mother more than his father, as probably his mother gave him a lot more attention and gave him unconditional love. Look around him, and he has a number of women in powerful positions, Sec. of State Rice being the best example. That adds to explaining his beheavors with the German Chanchellor.

I still think that GWB was just trying to have a bit of fun with Angela Merkel. She obvoiusly likes him, although a bit less than GWB likes her, so I think that the President thought that she wouldn't mind.

She didn't seem to, really.

Yes, it was inappropriate, and no, I wouldn't recommend that anyone treat anyone else in such a way, particularly in a corporate setting. But I think that your insight -- that Mr. Bush is acting in a "good ol' boy" manner -- is quite persuasive.

I don't get the sense that the President believes that G-8 Summits are all that important, and it seems that he considers it, as I mentioned above, something of a vacation in all but form.

That is true. But I also feel that the G-8 as a forum does not have very much importance. It's mostly for the constituents, so they can say and be happy being among the eight most developed nations. The UK is lobbing to add to the G-8 SouthAfrica, India, Mexico, Brasil and China. However developed this countries may be, it doesn't count. What matters are the indicators of how that development is doing for the population. In the case of Brasil and Mexico, one indicator tells it all. They are the two countries with the poorest income distribution index. What good does it make to join the G-8 if at least half the population lives in poverty? As far as I'm concerned the G-8 now, and in the future, whichever country they add is just smoke and mirrors.

AR385, you're more than welcome. Your comments about the expansion of the G-8 to include larger countries are thought-provoking.

On one hand, the G-8 could be a force for good, and in fact could serve as one of those smaller groups of nations that the right is so fond of touting as replacements for the UN. On the other, countries such as China are still undemocratic and so introducing them to the G-8 would seem to diminish the G-8 in related ways. And I think that the other problems you mentioned would must also be considered. Good points.
