The Rolling Stones - What Do You Think Of Them?

Mon Jul 24, 2006 8:51 am

Back in January this year, I had the great luck to see The Rolling Stones live on stage when I watched the Superbowl in Detroit's Ford Field. When I came back home, I told my father about this (he's a hardcore Stones fan) and he got a bit jealeous apprently ( Big grin) so he made sure that he attends the next available Stones concert.

He had luck, they were at Cologne today and my parents just returned from the concert. It must have been an awesome show, not only the music but also the stage and the background show. I was already amazed when I saw them live at Detroit playing three songs, and I can really imagine that a two hour nonstop Stones concert must be something really special.

Isn't it amazing what a show these guys (considering their age) still offer? I can not imagine that Jagger & Co. were hardcore drinkers and hardcore drug abusers in the past (as the media likes to report), you can't be that fit in this high age when you were always drunk and high in the past 35 years.

Did anyone else here see the Stones live on stage? If yes, what did you think?

I'm giving it a shot! I'll tell you how it works out.  silly

Great as they are (and they've not always been up there on my list), they should really give it all up for their 70th birthdays (after all, they pre-date Woodstock by over half a decade!).

By the way, does anyone else remember the Simpsons' episode where Homer was wearing a "The Rolling Stones - Last Tour Ever" t-shirt?  rotfl

A friend of mine had an extra ticket back a few months ago when they played in San Francisco....down in front, with backstage passes too. (She works for a radio station)

I didn't go. I remember thinking I either had to wash my hair or fold my underwear that night.....

I saw the Stones years ago in Toronto ... at Skydome (now Roger's Centre) I believe. It was one of the first concerts at that venue after it opened, and the acoustics were not great.

That being said, I would go see them again and again. I'm a big fan.

The other morning, I was driving to work and singing along (rather enthusiastically) to "She's So Cold". I got a couple of looks, but it was worth it.

My favorite band. I saw them at Shea and Soldier field. They still rock though they should hang it up soon. The Super bowl performance was bad. Mick was wasted.

From first listening to their ,Out Of Our Heads" lp in '64, with such
great tunes as "Satisfaction","Last Time" and a great Otis Redding
version of "Mercy,Mercy", The Stones have remained the best rock
n roll band ever since.

I have an immense amount of respect for the Rolling Stones. I can only hope to still be playing music when I'm 65 (and doing it well!).

I saw them a few years ago at Edison Field in Anaheim, CA. They put on quite a show, and played a great set.

As to their hardcore drinking/drugging, well, it's simply true. Keith Richards still drinks and smokes up a storm, from what I hear. He also spent almost a decade addicted to heroin. Also sounds like Ronnie Wood is still struggling with alcoholism.

Honestly, I'm not the biggest fan of Mick Jagger as a singer; but he's done well by the Stones, and he's a great showman, so oh well.

If you can get your hands on the Guitar World magazine from December '02, there's a great interview with Keith Richards in there. He talks quite a bit about the various aspects of being in a band, from studio sessions to groupies.

I think Richards summed it up best (from that GW interview):
"The only difference between us and the Beatles is that we're still going."

Their music rocks and I'd love to go see them live, but there is NO WAY in hell I'd pay what they charge for tickets!!! No one is worth that.

Saw them on Friday in Berlin - awesome concert although I usually prefer smaller clubs this one was a hell of show. I can pass on Keith singing, though  Wink

The Stones rule.

I'd love to see them go back to their roots and do a blues-infused album, back to old school stuff in the way Clapton has.

But from stem to stern, they're just awesome.

One of the greatest R&R bands of all time if you ask me, and I'm an  old  so I have listened to them through the ups and downs of their music. (subjective of course, but that's how I see it)

I saw them live in 1981 or 82, their first "farewell tour" alledgedly. Great show, biggest stage I had ever seen up to that point. "U"-shaped runwys extending out into the auditorium. Opened with Under My Thumb, and never let up for about three hours. Recorded, and released as a live album. I'm one of the screaming fans on the record. Be sure to listen closely for me....  Big grin {Bigthumbsup}

I respect their achievements, but they were before my time, and none of their songs really made an impression on me. Same with the Beattles, and the sight of Mick Jaggers face makes me want to vomit!

They have got to be the most overexposed, most overrated band ever. Try listening to the radio in southern california for an hour without hearing one of their songs. It can't be done! I am totally burned out on this band, and have been for a real long time.Along with the Beatles, the two groups I cannot handle.

I think a bunch of ugly 60 year old men shouldn't be singing rock n' roll anymore.  Big grin

I mean, every time I see Keith Richards, I think of the movie "Weekend At Bernies", and think he's been dead for 20 years, and Mick Jagger and Charlie Watts are just holding him up, or he's tied to puppet strings while on stage.

I mean he looks deader 'n a fish.

Well at least they can write songs and play on their own, one thing most new bands can not (American Idol etc.....).
Also I would not say they are overrated, Keith Richards is called the best "worst guitarist" in the world  Wink
And to sum up the Rolling Stones you can just quote themselves:
It is only Rock and Roll but I like it  Wink

Personally , I never was really was a big stones fan. I prefered Zeppelin/later Beatles and The Doors. Especiacly now it makes me kind of Queezy seeing the old gits trying to act like 20 year olds again. Having played in bands before, trying to bring together a group that can work together is difficult. The fact that they were able to write songs and make the arrangements for so long is pretty amazing. Besides my Dad still likes them !!!  Big grin

The greatest of great bands......love the stones. "Brown suger" and "You Can't Always Get What You Want" are my favs. The stones are perfect blend of rock and roll and blues.

The fact that they are sixty and still able to rock and generate more concert income then anyone is a testimony of their abilities. I wish when I am sixty I have the same energy as the stones do.
Come on you gunners......!!!!!

Started out as Brian Jone's RnB tribute band.
Got decent management, told to get writing, Jones was too off his head to do so.
After a slip with a cod hippy album in 1967, Jagger/Richards wrote a string of great albums from Beggars Banquet to Exile On Main St from 1968-72.

After that, no thanks, just repeating themseleves, never seen them live, never plan to.
Because it's not the late 60's early 70's anymore.

But their place in rock history is very assured.
