Where In Europe Is Still Cold?

Tue Jul 25, 2006 6:16 am

After waking up every morning for the past week with my head throbbing because I am completely dehydrated from sweating all night, I was thinking of trying to go somewhere cooler this weekend. Can anybody recommend a place, within about a 6 hour trainride or less from Frankfurt, that is cold or at least a good bit cooler than here? I can´t sleep or eat in my apartment. I live on the top floor and have no AC. Where in Switzerland is coldest now? Is Denmark just as bad? Thanks.

I was in Zurich today and it was 33C, and here in Ticino it's 34C. The only place I can think of is the canton of Graubünden, in places like Davos or St. Moritz, where it's around 22-25C, or on top of Mount Gotthard. Have fun  Smile

Two friends just returned today from Copenhangen and they were dying because of the heat up there. I've just returned today from Berlin and - guess what - it's the same.

Try your freezer  Wink . Seriously, no idea where it is at least "cool" in Europe right now, it seems that it's f'n hot everywhere. But at least it is supposed to finally rain again. Okay, only on friday, but still.

There were huge thunderstorms both saturday and sunday, and I was still miserable at night. Switzerland may be the only place to go. I have never been there.

I will very likely be there. Thanks  Smile

Two fiends just told you a lie. In Copenhagen we enjoy the best summer since 1994. Or rather the FIRST summer since 1994.

Germans seem to have invaded us by the millions. They enjoy our nice, clean beaches as much as we do since the sea in most places have passed well above the 20 degrees mark.

And even if Germans on most popular places seem to outnumber Danes, then keep coming. We have room for many more. We have well over 3,000 miles of coastline.

Where is it cold in Europe? In northern Scandinavia. My sistern and brother in law have just prematurely escaped a holiday in Lofoten, mid-northern Norway. 8 degrees day and night, heavy winds and pouring rain around the clock. Winter hasn't ended in Northern Scandinavia yet.

Not really a lie. Heat is relative. If you are used to 12-17 degress and it is 20-25, then you could be hot.

I live where it is 44 today. Could be hotter.

Doesn't CPH get summer every year?  Wink

Yeah, heat is relative. But when we have 25 degrees - as today - then I just take off my winter jacket. It is no more complicated than that.

No. Roughly every ten years only.  Angry

Old people are still talking about 1947 as the last really nice and lasting summer we had.

Well guys ,come to aberdeen, top temperature is 25c ATM, i find it very "angenehm" (sorry i really can't think of an english word for it atm) compared to Essen (germany) where i just spent a week. I think the problem in germany is that temperatures do not drop at night, i can't sleep when there are such murderous temperatures.

Why is that a lie? I think it is pretty warm here in Copenhagen, don't you?

Yes it is, when you're sweating even without a winter jacket on and while only wearing a t-shirt

Also the temperature here in Copenhagen has been above 30c sometimes. 33c a few times

But to answer Vulindlelas question: Attend the Svalbard a.net meeting at the beginning of August. Between 5c and 10c there during summer  Wink

In Iceland, it's 10-15C on average. It can however go up to 25C, but that's rare and very annoying.  Smile

Huh, is it really so? Then I am quite lucky working in a perfectly airconditioned office with 23 degrees year around.  Cool

Probably it depends on what you consider a "good summer". I was in CPH in 2004 hoping to find some fresh air. It was hot, as in "we were sweating without a jacket", which is too much for me. But I guess I can't have it all, and I can't move to Svalbard  Smile

in places like Davos

Funny I had suggested that to my wife for this summer, but we ended up on the Costa del Sol last week ("only" around 33°C but sooooo heavy/humid), then part of August in the centre of Spain where temps are around 40-45°C!!! Even here where I live in Toulouse we're near enough to 40°C. I'm sick and tired of the heat! I've decided I hate July and August. Going back for a week to my good "auld" home town of Dublin in August, but even parts of Ireland have recently been reaching near historic maximums of around 33°C.
Next summer I think I'll convince the wife that we move to Lapland for a couple of months! Doubt she'll agree though.
I can't believe I'm saying this, but I'm actually looking forward to Autumn/winter.

And then some say there's no global warming. I mean come on, it's clear that average summer maximums are pretty higher than usual these past few years.
Long live Aer Lingus!

Have you thought of getting an air conditioner for your bedroom?

I would love to. I have only been to Oslo, and that was in the winter, with everybody telling me I must come back and see it in the summer. I want to go to Bergen, but would rather wait until I can take at least 5 or 6 days. I had planned on a train ride this weekend, but maybe I will go see what kind of flights to Norway I can find.  Smile

Aren't there any cities on mountains? Where I live in Mexico, the lows are at about 10C the highs in the 20s but not humid. But the city is like over 6000ft above sea level.

I can't think of any elevated plain in central Europe large enough to build a city on. Towns and villages, yes of course, but not a large city.

I guess that is something common in North, Central and South America.

Can you imagine a city like Mexico City being built on an elevated plain some 7000ft + above sea level? I thought that awesome.

The highest city in the world I think is Quito, Ecuador at 15,000ft? Or is there another? Nice weather I imagine.

Stay at home, the forecast says that it will cool down, only 20°C on Friday and 26°C on Saturday (at least in the western part of Germany). I really hope that it is true!

We had 36°C in Bochum today, a friend and me were driving through the city in my friend's convertible and it was hot as hell, we were on the way to another friend but we had to stop on a kiosk en route to get a frozen drink, I almost faint because of the heat and because I didn't drink much this afternoon.

Patrick

PS: I hope the Ossis enjoy 37°C on Friday when I will relax with a beer at 20°C.  rotfl

It is. We pay about $0.15/kWh in Switzerland. And I decided to run an air conditioner about 6 hours per day in my apartment anyway.

It needs about 1kW, therefore it costs me $0.90 per day. But at least I can get some sleep  Smile

Ireland is not expected to exceed 20 in the next couple of days. Come around and cool yourself in Dublin. Guinness helps as well  old
