I was working in a hospital and was transferring a cardiac patient from ER
to CCU, which was two floors up. The power went out following a lightning strike while we were in the elevator. Since they draw so much current, the elevators weren't connected to the emergency generator. The elevator did what it was programmed to do and slowly descended to the next floor. The doors opened very slowly to reveal a couple of very pregnant women walking around in hospital gowns. We were stuck in the OB
department. That's where the cardiac patient was held until the power came back on.
Since the OB
department wasn't equipped with CCU equipment, I stayed and cared for the patient for three hours using telemetry and portable CCU equipment.
