Best Beer

Wed Jul 26, 2006 7:45 am

Even if lots of people might disagree I´ll state that the best beer comes from Germany.  goldmedal  Hard to say which one it is. Of the big companies I think Koenigspilsner is the best. From the local ones it is hard to say there are so many. Now your opinions please  Big grin So here we go the Best Beer Award 2006 goes to ....  trophy

Sorry, but German beer all tastes the same to me, not very many variancies. Ko-pi is by far average, but its also my dads favourite beer.

If you want some great beers, come to Canada! The micro-brews here are amazing and even the mass-market (Sleemans, Labatts, Molson) are very drinkable. Just stay away from Kokannee though, tastes like fish piss

On my way out now ....

But, while we are on the topic of beers, one thing I find disgraceful is adding flavours to it. Very popular in Germany, such as lemon, apple-lemon, cola, and God only knows what else ... blah!

And they dare to sell it as premium. You know why that is? Before the wall came down, Warsteiner was a piss cheap beer for those who couldn't afford anything better (or had a bad taste). After the unification, the former "Zonis" preferred Warsteiner for the mere reason it was so cheap and the brewery soon ran out of capacities. They then drastically increased prices which further boosted demand ("It's expensive, so it has to be good"). That was the beginning of turning Warsteiner into a premium brand.  grumpy

Quoting Sabena332 (Reply 8):
then I prefer Fiege, Kö-Pi or Bit.

Bitburger was great in the early 80s, but now it's actually pretty poor.

Of all major breweries, I still prefer Jever Pilsener, although today's Jever is not half as good as it was twenty years ago before they decided to expand. It is still very distinguishable with a strong note of hops without tasting bitter. Should be served well chilled, almost cold.

I didn't test much beer coming from micro-breweries, since I generally like wine better. But Spalter No. 1 and Freudenberger Pilsener are great. Freudenberger actually bears a close resemblance to the early Jever Pilsener, but it's extremly difficult to get.
I support the right to arm bears

Personally, and I know people will get on my case for this one, I like good 'ol Budweiser. I'll drink others, Sleemans Honey Brown is good, Rickard's Red, Lakeport Pilsner, MGD or Labatt Blue are also acceptable, but in the end, I'm a Bud guy.

No. A real disgrace would be Cerveza Imperial and Cerveza Pilsen, which are both the most popular beers (Imperial being the more popular of the two) in Costa Rica. They don't even closely taste like beer at all, and yet the State Brewery claimed that they import ingredients from Germany to brew all their beers.

Maybe I should just do some home invasion at Piotr's and get wasted with all the beer he's got stashed.  duck

Nah, I was just commenting your signed by. I never intended to bash you. After all, here in Costa Rica, the choices when it comes to beer are very limited. At least you got access to real beer, light or not. I'm stuck with something that only tastes beer-ish, hence why I rarely drink beer at all.

My favorite beer would be the Czech microbrew Svijany. Another Czech microbrew, Opat, is good, as is Klaster and other yeasty or unpasteurized beers (eg. Pilsner Urquell's, they have it at the pub by the brewery museum in Pilsen). Another good beer is Italian Peronni.

Most of my beer drinking friends ,the ones with more than thirty years of "testing", have come to agreement that FREE BEER is the best!
I purposely buy some cheap stuff for the refrigerator in my workshop, and they will complain , but most still drink it ! The repeat visitors know the "good stuff" is in the house.

Bass(Nice warm up for a nigth on the town)
Guinness(Good drinking beer)

From the above you can pretty much tell, I like Beer  Smile
For the most part I like brown porter's or Wheat beers if it is a microbrewery.
I am not much for Pilsners

Some MicroBrewry Favorites

Pete's Wicked Winter Ale
BlackStar(Whitefish, MT) Snowghost

I didn't have a chance to buy this one at a Safeway in Vancouver Washington, but the name caught my eye "Moose Droole", makes you wonder what it tastes like.

Quoting UALramperORD (Reply 38):
Its brewed in PA near PIT

Point of contention - Yuengling, while a great beer, is not brewed near PIT. Pottsville, PA is 240 miles removed from Pittsburgh - it's a lot closer to Philadelphia than it is the 'Burgh.

As for my picks for the best beer:

Anything put out by Highland Brewing in Asheville, NC. Great craft brew, interesting tastes (they had a heather lager for a short span that was good), just a good beer in general.
South Carolina - too small to be its own country, too big to be a mental asylum.
