I'd never dream of not wearing my seatbelt. I'd rather put that piece of material that could potentially save my life across me than risk my life.

Always, as well as everyone else in the car.

We had seat belts in our cars when they were "options" and my parents always made us wear them.

In Michigan you can be pulled over and ticketed for not using your seatbelt.

Isn't it much more likely to have an accident in the city? But then, you're faster when you're out of the city.

You'd think that every civilized country in the world would make it a law. I worked in New Hampshire for a year, and they only "kindly suggest" you wear the seatbelt, but it's not a law.

That is sooooo stupid! How much does it possibly take to make it a law? How many lives would be saved?

(In fact, I'd really be interested to see the numbers)

Always. Have since I bought my first car in 1962 and I had to put seatbelts in it, because it didn't have them.

You are going to be in a car crash.

I'll say that again.

You ARE going to be in a car crash.

It is most likely to occur within a mile or two of your home. It is probably going to occur in town and not out in the country.

Every last one of is will. Statistically there is no avoiding it. I've been in one rollover as a passenger, one head-on as a passenger and one multi-car rear-ender on a California freeway as a driver. Maybe that will take the burden off two of you but the rest are going to have a crash.

I consider it socially irresponsible not to. I think it should be a thousand hours of community service minimum for not wearing one. Here is why.

Someone else will have to pay the cost for your stupidity and arrogance. Even if you have car insurance and health insurance your claim will still drive the rates up for the rest of us. If you don't have such insurance our excessively maternal government will see to it that you don't bleed to death at the scene.

Personally I'd rather let you die on the roadside but our society is not set up that way. So you compel others to pay for your foolishness.

I don't like being told I have to wear a seatbelt, or a helmet on a motorcycle, but anyone who doesn't is stupid. I would even approve of a law that makes your personal insurance void if it is proven that you were not wearing a seatbelt.

Yes, always.

First because it's smart. No matter where you're driving. No seatbelt = braindead.

Second because it's the law. Alaska Statutes provide for a $50 fine - per person - for failure to use the seat belt.

Third because of this annyoing alarm in my BAFDT that chimes every 15 seconds - loudly - unless the damn thing is buckled.

I use mine 100% of the time, no exceptions. If my car starts and I'mrnsitting in it, I already have it on. If someone else is in it, theyrnalso have to have theirs on, or the car does not start.

It'srnamazing the amount of ejected people we see hear anyway. The teenagersrnare the worst, I thought, but now having actually done the work, it'srnactually those over 30 that wear them the least, for this part of MT,rnthat is. I think all the driver's ed classes actually must have taught them something.

Glad to see so many people do wear it. Personally, I like the way it holds me to the seat.

Now that I think of it, there is an exception when I don't wear it. When I'm the attendant in the ambulance, and I have to move over or around the Strykerrnfor patient care, or we have more than one person on the ambulance, Irnmay disconnect the belt to help my patient. However, when not attendingrnactively to the patient, I put it right back on.  Smile

I use it always, except maybe when I'm just moving the car from the driveway to the garage. It's become just as reflexive as switching the lights on, which I also do all the time because it does make a difference.

Several years ago I somehow forgot to use the seatbelt, I didn't even notice until after some 500 metres because my brain is set to "being in a moving car = seatbelt on".  Silly

Always, always but always wear your seat belt. A lot of accidents are caused by complacency, for example by not paying due care and attention in the vicinity of your own home.

Exactly the same here. And besides that, my VW Golf GTI has a nice "ding ding ding" warning going on if the passenger (or the driver) doesn't buckle up.

The place where I bought the car offered to disable the warning (!!). I politely declined because it's just one more way to force lazy passengers to wear seatbelts. And it works  Smile

Yes, even when I move the cars between driveways I instinctly put it on.

I am so strongly for seatbelts that if a person is in a car accident and they are deemed to have not been wearing a seat-belt they should have to pay for their treatment out of their own pocket.

As to my truck, alas, the local police have now picked up on another way to make money so yes I wear the seatbelt.

I've been in a rollover as the driver and if I had had the seatbelt on I'd be dead or paralyzed. Because I didn't and I saw it coming I was able to laydown and hug the seat. When everything stopped and I tried to sit up, I made it about 12 inches before I banged my head on the roof of the truck. Good thing there was no fire, I was stuck until the fire department used the jaws to create a hole for me to clamber out of, and not a scratch on me. If I had had the seatbelt on and it locked while I tried to lay down, it wouldn't have been pretty.

I'll be the first to admit I've been lucky but still, I think manadatory use is just another knee jerk response by the government to try and find ways to keep idiots from killing themselves. If you drive defensively and remain alert, no phone, radio down to background, then you should be aware of anything treacherous in your immediate surroundings. I'm not saying this would save all lives but I get tired of having to change my lifestyle to accomodate the idiots of the world.

I wanted to edit this to say I'm a great believer in airbags. I think more should be done towards advancing that technology.

Thu Jul 27, 2006 12:39 am

On November 11, 1992 I had a run-in with a moving freight train (no, I'm not kidding). I was on a back country road, and was unfamiliar with the area. It was dark, and I saw a glow coming from beside the tracks as I was approaching. I assumed it was a car pulling out of a nearby driveway - but it was a Norfolk Southern intermodal train moving at approximately 70 mph.

I stood on my brakes (I was driving a 1989 Mercedes 190E), and if the train hadn't been there I probably would have stopped on the tracks. Unfortunately the train WAS there, and I impacted the fuel tank on the 2nd loco (a GE Dash 8-40C). The fuel tank didn't open, and probably didn't do much damage. However the rear steps tore everything off my car from the firewall forward.

The impact of the rear stairs pushed what was left of my car back away from the tracks (an absolute miracle - no other way of describing it). I had a nice black bruise across my chest from the seatbelt, but I was alive. Had I not been wearing the seatbelt, I would have likely been ejected from the missing windshield area, and I would be part of the ballast on that track today.

I won't put my vehicle in Drive if any occupant isn't buckled in. It's just that simple. Yes, sometimes people die as a result of a seatbelt (it's extremely rare though), but in the end seat belts do far more good than harm.

So buckle up people! I'm living proof that it will save your life.

There was a time when I wouldn't wear it on quick, 5 minute drives. That all changed when I got ticketed for not wearing one while driving a few minutes up the block to Kinkos. I decided it wasn't worth the $90 fine.

Exactly how I feel if I don't have one on. When I was in Shanghai recently none of the taxis there had seatbelts for the passengers and although I trusted the driver I didn't feel overly safe!

One exception is that I refuse to wear lapbelts on busses and coaches, I say this because they can cause more damage than if you were not wearing them, I much prefer the propper shoulder belts which do not do this.

I'd buy your argument if it was a five-point restraint system we were talking about - it is hard to lay over in the seat with one of them. But in my rear-ender I saw in my mirror that I was going to be clobbered hard from behind and even though the seatbelt and single shoulder harness were on I had no troube whatever laying across the front seat.

My intentions are to wear it 100% of the time, and I'd say I follow through about 95% of the time. Sometimes when I'm running errands I forget to put it on as I pop in and out of the car. But when I realize I don't have it on, I do immediately fix that.

However, I'm in the same boat as Gilligan - in my one bad accident, if I'd been wearing my seat belt, I'd be dead. I flipped end over end going down an embankment, and while I was bounced into the passenger side, the drivers side was crushed by a tree.

Always. I remember when I was a kid in the UK there was a campaign on TV with Jimmy Savile: "clunk click every trip" or clunk closing the car door, click of the seat belt. My new BMW has an annoying audible and visual warning if the driver or passenger doesn't put it on.

Every situation is unique. I'd buy the rear ender argument except in my rear ender I too saw the car coming and hit the gas since no traffic was going through the intersection at the time. That partially negated the force of the hit. In my rollover I had much less time to react. I remain convinced to this day that a sudden move like I did would have locked the shoulder belt and I would have payed dearly for it.

And painful.

I always wear my seatbelt, no matter what, and I think people who don't wear them are stupid.
