More Americans Too Fat For X-rays

Whoa, that's really a growing concern for the health of a nation. Fast foods? Eating habits? All the chemical junk in foods now (aka preservatives)?

Have your say

Let me ask you this. Why are you so concerned with Americans being fat? Who cares? Americans not being able to fit into a CT Scan Machine doesn't effect you at all.

It does if you're next in the queue and they can't get the bugger back out...  Wink

wow! It must be as dense as lead irked
It doesn't effect me so I don't care. It's their fault anyways.

Ok, here's one: Because if it's some kind of disease, I don't want to be affected because of this "porous" US border!

What cynicism.

I posted that because because it raises valid questions and issues regarding our food sources, food preparation and this affects not only Americans but others around the world as well.

Why respond with such cynicism?

So the machines makers in "Canadia" get to charge MORE money for making a bigger machine.

Hey your neighbours across the water are smart. Their development of regular machines for the fat ass American is going to cost your economy bad. You're going to be forced to buy Canadia's products and before you know it you'll all be called Norm and eating at Timmy's. Sure.

Blame Matt.

I'm an American and I'm not fat.

I don't make stupid generalizations about Canadians, i.e., "They're all moose-fornicating flannel wearers named Doug who drink Labatts and smear each other with maple syrup while watching hockey and smoking pot," so why do you?

Yes, some Americans have weight problems. Yes, it's their own fault.

Again, how does this affect anyone who isn't an overweight American?

"With 64 percent of the U.S. population either overweight or obese, the problem is worsening, but it represents a business opportunity for equipment makers and hospitals"

That's the American way! Seeing a problem as a business opportunity!  rotfl

Actually I think it's a reasonable generalization- 66.3% of Americans over the age of 20 are overweight or obese, while 32% are obese.

http://www.cdc.gov/nchs/fastats/overwt.htm

But of course, some people will fall into the remaining 33.7%.
Let's play some Pitch...

You guys are making this into way too much of a US/Canada thing. Most of the time the term "American" in the media can be interpreted as "North American" - Canada has an awful lot of obese people too.

Thanks for having a sense of humor, Dude.

No, I know the rest of the world likes to make fun of us for being fat, but to tell you the truth, most americans I know are completely embarassed that the image projected across the pond is that the average American looks and behaves like a guest on Jerry Springer.

I can't state this as fact, but from my experience, walking around NYC and Philly, I don't see too many overweight people. Now, travelling to the middle states, I can't say that. Are the fatties staying inland?

Do people in metropolitan areas stay more fit over the world?

The one thing I don't get about this whole overweight classification system is the concept of one's Body Mass Index (BMI). I'm about 5'9", and I weigh 154 pounds - I don't have much fat on my body at all; in fact, my doctor said that I shouldn't really go any lower in weight. Yet, according to the BMI scale, I'm a 24.3 (or something in that range) - just below the border of 25 for "normal" and "overweight". What am I supposed to do to fall lower into the normal category - eat 800 calories per day for a month?

I really don't think that the categorization system is fair nor accurate; just because you're a certain weight doesn't mean you're fat, particularly for people that are muscular. Someone with a lot of muscles can weigh a lot (muscles weigh more than fat), but according to weight alone, they'd be "overweight."

It's not only the US.

Danish hospitals recently had to buy a sh*tload of lifts- you know, the ones used to lift obese people into a hospital bed from ie. a wheelchair/operating table- as well as larger beds. We've never been a "fat nation", so this is scary.

Why do I care? Because healthcare is paid through taxes here. So because SOME people feel like overeating, I, and other danes, have to pay for their extra healthcare and this new equipment!

Obesity must affect the economy in the states somehow too.

Sure, some obesity is caused by genetics and other healthproblem, but this is only 1-4 percent. Of course it's their body and they should do what they want to- but it's kinda like smokers- WE have to pay for it in the end because THEY can't contain themselves...
