Your Favorite Nuts

Sat Jul 29, 2006 10:32 am

While the juvies amongst us may see this as a pathetic opportunity for lame signed by posts, I put this forth:

1. The cashew. Buttery, crisp, and inimitably satifying (after a whole flippin' can).

2. The pecan. Grown largely in Georgia (US), it has a, well, shall I say, wonderfully nutty flavor.

3. The macadamia. Self-centered and deservedly so. So round and snappy, who wouldn't want that burst in their mouth?

I have a good story about pecans if anyone give a rat's ass. Lemme know.

So, what say y'all?

I have to second your choices, in the same order. I can kill a can of cashews in no time. I do prefer them lightly salted.

Some nuts I dig:

1) Sylvia Plath (for her insanely inspired poetry)
2) Zelda Fitzgerald (for exasperating F. Scott)
3) Diane Airbus (oops Arbus, for her potent b & w pics)
4) Wilhelm Reich (for the Orgone Box and Cloud Busting)
5) Woody Allen (for shacking up with Soon Yi)

and, the more edible kind:

1) How could we forget the ALMOND! (Amygdala in Greek; brain food of the Gods) I'll take them roasted to eat out of hand, milked for shakes and on cereal, slivered on veggies and salad and studded in baked goods like "biscotti". What would Marzipan and frangipane be without 'em?
2) The curvaceous, creamy cashew (roasted if you please)
3) The Spanish peanut (with it's red skin a-peeling like a 3rd degree sunburn)

I also sometimes put peanuts in my Dr Pepper. In fact, that's the only way I can stand Dr Pepper.

Oh, oh, oh! Water chestnuts, especially in a spicy garlic sauce, the perfect compliment to Asian cuisine.

Well, where to begin?

Sylvia Plath certainly makes sense, but I'd be a bit hesitant to eat her after 42 years. Probably tastes a bit dusty by now. Same for Zelda, but she's a whack-job, so she may actually be a bit more fresh. Still, a bit dicey...

As for the Spanish peanut...good Lord. Let's confine this discussion to sane topics, not two-bit skank-whore nuts relegated to the dregs of us all.   No offense to the Spanish amongst us, but peanuts are just plain bourgeoise, No?

Have a freakin' macadamia for flippin' out loud!

My favorite non-man nuts...

  • Pistacios - I can kill a nutsac of pistacios, but my fingertips get sore from the shelling
  • Cashews - roasted and salted; my favorite salty nuts
  • Peanuts - my favorite snack at an Astros game; nothing reminds me of balls being smacked around like peanuts
  • Almonds - these nuts are best with fresh fudge
  • Pecans - these nuts in a pie always remind me of my Grandpa, who knew how to make 'em melt in your mouth

Personnaly, my favorites have got to be roasted peanuts in the shell, especally at ball games, where you don't have to do anything with the shells aside from drop them.

Every nut and the kitsch In Sync has been mentioned except the following:

Hazel (nocciola gelato, Nutella)

Brazil (often called a racist name by our un-PC forebears that won't be mentioned here in this forum)

Pine (the pignoli of pesto and Italian pastries)

Corn Nuts (not nuts but roasted and in some cases, flavored corn kernels- ubiQUITOus Peruvian snack food)

Soy Nuts (not nuts but beans that are roasted and often spiced or sweetened - a natural source of female hormones for those who need hot flash remedies.)

Inuendo aside, I gotta go with Logan, but with a couple additions:

Quoting CastleIsland (Thread starter):

4. Pine Nuts - Be it pesto, a topper for a salad or just some added flavor - they live up to their name and add just the right hint of 'pine' to a dish
5. Raw Peanuts (yes, I know they're not a true nut) - Sounds strange but someone recently gave me a 2lb bag of raw unshelled peanunts and I've discovered they're the perfect thing to leave out in a bowl and munch on. The shelling makes sure that I only eat a few, but the peanut itself has such an earthy flavor that it fills me up.

but peanuts are just plain bourgeoise, No?

Cashews - yes, absolutely ! Best nut ever, especially in Chinese food.

Pecans - acceptible in Southern pie-form, otherwise I wouldn't bother

Macadamia - only as part of a chocolate-based confectionary or icecream. No good on their own.

I defy your categorization of peanuts as "bourgeois" - peanuts are the sturdy honest working class nut, derided but functional - where, for example, would we get peanut butter if not for peanuts. What would we eat with our tiny cocktails on planes ?

Pine nuts are excellent in all sorts of things, but I don't think I've ever had them on their own.

I don't know if these count as nuts or not, but toasted soya things are yummy too - had them on AA amidst the other warmed nuts, they were good.

Ever try eating peanuts with the shell on? At first, years ago, I thought that sounded a bit disgusting, but after trying it, they really are good. If they are truly raw, and not previously cleaned and roasted, you can do it yourself. Wash 'em quick, pat dry and roast away. You can experiment with a few really small batches to figure out how long it takes to get them to the right degree of roastedness.

Now for the inuendo, as promised: there's something about putting nuts as nature created them into your mouth, isn't there? Actually, I'm asking.  Wink
