Your Opinions On South Park?

Mon Jul 31, 2006 11:39 am

I personally love the show, I think it still is funny even today and it still manages to be refreshingly funny and original.

I think overall, the best seasons were 3 and 5. Best episodes? Can't really say, there are so many that come to mind...

When I talk to people who think South Park is stupid, I always ask: "Could you write a South Park episode or song?" Most people don't realize that beyond the obvious basic crudity, there is a sophisticated and pretty intelligent satirical element to the show...

Nothing has been held sacred by this show. EVERY conceivable cultural occurrence/personality of the last 10 years has been bashed/satirized in the show, and I think that's why people were somewhat pissed when Isaac Hayes left the show earlier this year...

Anyway, I'm interested in your opinions on the show. If you are gonna give an opinion either way, please justify instead of just saying it... and no flaming or bashing of anyone please! Other than that, I await your responses!

I do like the Simpsons and a little of Family Guy, hate Futurama, but mainly I like the old TV shows like Frasier and Cheers. Seinfeld too, to a lesser degree.

I'm a big South Park fan. That said, I don't watch the new episodes when they come out, but I catch reruns fairly often (so I don't actually know what season most of the episodes are from, except for the very first few episodes of the series).

I tend to be a fan of shows that push the envelope like that in a completely original way. I seriously wish that everyone in the world could have the ability to laugh at themselves.

(the episode was on last night where it was New Years Eve 1999, and everyone was waiting for Jesus to do something spectacular....I'm still amazed at the kick I get out of the fact that Jesus lives in South Park....such a friggin awesome idea...not to mention their portrayal of Rod Stewart in that episode....)

I only starting watching this season, and the episode "Tsst" is one of the funniest shows in the history of TV. (Google "tsst" and the "South Park" episode is right near the top.) Other than that, I find it to be amusing, but it doesn't make me laugh out loud much. So it doesn't really compare to "Seinfeld" where I laugh at the jokes even after watching all the episodes 10 times.

But I must admit that I think of "South Park" whenever somebody brags about their stupid hybrid car. They're so smug they think their own farts smell good.

"Tsst" was far and away the best episode of the new season...the rest of the new season was crap, but go back and and watch some of the older eps, they are classic...almost all of them are great, can't single any one out...

The movie... Oh god! The movie... South Park: Bigger, Longer, and Uncut

I never laughed so hard. I had to see it three times because I missed parts due to laughing. 400 swear words in 81 minutes. Not bad.

Every couple of months the uncensored version is shown on Comedy Central.

I think they're at their best when they aren't topical. Episodes like 'Awesom-o', Scott Tenorman must die', and the japanamation one...outstanding work. The original comedy ones are the most appealing to me...when they get topical it gets too preachy and they use it as a crutch for the jokes.

I also think the line of 'it sucks now that Chef is gone' is a crock of bull. He was hardly in it lately anyway, and when he was it was only for a scene. It's not like Matt and/or Trey left. THEN it wouldn't be the same....

Another irony of SP is how conservative it is. Always challenging liberal causes and making fun on Democrat politicians. Yet is the right wing that wants to shut it down. It's always been and odd thing about the show...

What I love about that episode is when God comes down, and lets the people ask him one question and Stan comes out of nowhere and asks God why he hasn't gotten his period yet... it was one of the best moments in the show!

Plus the songs from the movie- classic! It still amazes me how they went to such lengths to make songs like "Blame Canada", "Shut your Fucking Face, Unclefucka" (both versions), and "Kyle's Mom's a Bitch" actually sound good. Those songs could've sounded a lot worse...

They demonstrate South Park's true comic genius- could YOU write a song like any of those?

As for celebrities, I think the best ones South Park has made fun of are Mel Gibson and Brooke Shields in the movie ("I farted on the set of Blue Lagoon once!")

Almost forgot, the episode with the married couple with "buttocks where their faces should be" (as they described it) is extremely funny, because in the episode, they are looking for their long-lost son and they finally at the end meet him- it turns out to be Ben Affleck! I almost fell on the floor laughing at that...

No one comes close to Barbara Striesand. I saw and interview with Matt and Trey where they said "We'll pick on celebrities alot, and most of the time it's just for fun, but when we rip on Barbara Striesand, it's cause we really hate that bitch!"

Did you see "It hits the Fan" episode? They had a counter in the bottom part of the screen counting all the times they said shit - it ended up being about 165 for a 30 minute episode. It was in response to a FCC ruling saying "shit" was okay to say after 10 pm.

My favorite episode - "Raisins"

Still love SP, even though it looks like the newest seasons from season 8 on won't be shown on German TV  Sad . Not sure of a real "favorite" episode, though I vividly remember the episode with Johnny Cochrane ("Ladies and Gentleman, this is a Chewbacca..."). In general, it seems like the episodes are being shown in no particular order these days on German TV, not to mention the regularly changing time slots  Yeah sure .

I cannot say I agree with that. Whenever they can take a shot they do, I just dont thing they keep score. I was under the impression that one or both are relatively conservative politically. You can see it if you look into the episodes IMO.

Did you miss the first 1-15 minutes of "Team America?" That certainly was a direct shot at Bush and Cheney.....

How about South Park - Bigger, Longer, Uncut? That movie was a clear attack on censorship, and how parents need to accept responsibility to protect their children from what they deem inappropriate - not to rely on the blunt tool of censorship.

There is still a question from the right and left as to whether or not that was planned to boost halftime viewership due to the significant decline during halftime. If you think it was a "malfunction" fine, but I think it is VERY hard to believe.

Other channels are now timing programming to take place during that time regardless of when it actually happens, and halftime is generally regarded as VERY boring. Until the nipple that is.

Some of the humor is subtle. Instead of mocking Bush like they did with Gore, they made their cartoon version of Bush more intelligent and articulate than the real president. It took me a while to figure out what they were doing.

Then I got it: our president looks retarded compared to a South Park cartoon character.

Southpark is and always will be (im my mind) the best show ever on television. As a moderate in a country getting more politically divided everyday, it is truly wonderful to see a show that demonstrates what I feel to be the best unbiased morale through funny yet crude humor. Congratulations to Southpark again for the Peobody Award. I'm glad to see the show is recognized by the members of this forum and the folks at Peabody. Twilight Zone is a close second.

hahaha it's the best show ever! I have to agree of the quality of innovation and how to combine such a level of knowledge with a cartoon. You really get amazed at how somethings are being bashed in an indirect way.

The best episode is definately the one of the animals in the wood that are going to give birth to the antichrist. I was just amazed with that!

Also the Micheal Jackson episode where he takes the nose out of his kid and then the son does the same! haha

I think it's a sad commentary on our country when the two most intelligent, and topical shows on prime-time are animated. You have South Park and Family Guy, then you have your choice of various reality crap.

The only episode that was done on construction paper was the first one. After that, they started using CGI.

No the first few seasons were construction paper. I believe it was when they hit "4th Grade" that it began to become CGI. If not then, it was around that era.

South Park is one of my favourite TV shows. Oh yes, RTL is showing a new South Park episode in an hour, yayers!

Yup, and that's why you have no friends.

I disagree, the guy just don't like the show, it has nothing to do with his social life. I never liked Seinfeld or Friends and I came out ok...
