IN-N-OUT Fries

Thu Aug 03, 2006 8:50 am

Although I adore In-N-Out, I was wondering if anybody agreed with me on one simple point: their fries let them down. Their burgers are probably the best, or second best (I always am partial to barbecued meat) in the world. But their fries, although they are fresh, are somewhat disappointing. When they are really hot and fresh, they are darn good, and if the get a little cooler, they really are bad. They also get cool really fast, I have noticed.

I have all the love and respect In-N-Out in the world, but their fries aren't at the same level as their Burgers. What do you all think?

Most fries do.Most fries get stale very fast.

I agree that they lack some taste and texture compared to other fries, plus they're soggy. But it's a small price to pay for the knowledge that they are actual potatoes, cut right in front of your eyes. I'll take that any day over highly processed chemical sticks made of of who knows what in a factory who knows where and most likely contain dead animals the producers were too lazy to pick out.

What are you talking about, you crazy mad man!? In-N-Out fries are the best out there - fresh, all potato, crisp, hot...yes, they do need salt, but taste test them against McDross, Burger Ming, Carls Punier etc., and they are clearly superior.

In-N-Out Double Double animal style with added ketchup, fries, and a large root beer. That's a good meal.

Are you kidding me.......? You must be one....OH I get it, you're American... Obviously you opt for the more greasier fries such as McDonald's or Burger King.... In-N-Out has absolutely none of that nasty grease taste in them, and IMHO, they are fine without salt. Also, IMHO, they have the best fries out there..

It's simply because In-N-Out fries are simply made of.... potatoes.

McDonald's and Burger King fries are full of chemical additives to make them: faster to cook, durable in time, more tasty (and I don't want to know what they add), full of oil and fat to avoid cooling down in fast time.

And beyond that, only God knows.

I disagree 100%. I think they are the best "fast food" fries anywhere in the U.S. They taste fresh, and they have a great flavor to them. They're great even without ketchup.

I have to be at least 1100 miles from the closest In-N-Out Please do not start a thread on Del Taco!!! In theory I should be able to drive this in 18 hours..... oh yes the fries are excellet.

IIRC In and Out uses canola oil to cook their fries, so there isn't much flavor picked up from the oil. Now Five Guys Burgers uses peanut oil and their fries (all freshly sliced in store like In and Out) have flavor. So basically you need to salt them to make them have some flavor.

But for less than five bucks a double-double w/ fries and a medium coke is a pretty good deal.

Don't get me wrong, I love them, as posted, but I have a couple that are better. Among the few better are ones (non-fastfood) that I have made at home and from a place that makes everything on site (Tommy's on Coventry) : dressings, fries, and some others. In no way am a saying that they are worse than any other fast food, as they are the best among their class, and many others. ALso, they are the only ones you can tell are actually potatoes (try that with BK). But I am trying to say that their burgers are the best (anywhere, outside of barbecued burgers, especially when you can make them yourself) and their fries should be the same. Right now, In-N-Out is either 3rd or 4th on my top fry list.

Listen, I am trying to just moan about the fact that they cool off way to fast (even compaired to home and at Tommies). Also, I think that they would be way better if they used peanut oil. There is nothing else wrong, but after you get your burgers, and you eat those, the fries are already cold. That is my only complant.

I will agree with you. I think they are a little too plain. Yes they are probably healthier than the other fast food places, but they are still lacking something in regards to taste.

WOW! Their fries are the best! I love everything about In-N-Out. I was sad when I went to Michiagan for College. When my parents flew out to visit me a lot from FAT, they would bring In-N-Out on the plane for me so I could have it right when they get off the plane. Its great!

I'm always disappointed with In-N-Out's fries, but then I'm not a big fry guy. Like most things, if I'm really hungry, the fries taste pretty good, but ussually the Double Double and Coke cure my hunger pains, and the fries don't do it for me.
Still have to say that In-N-Out probably has one of the best burgers out there (and I'm not just talking about chains- Which they are far better than anybody else-BAR NONE), I'm talking about the numerous local hamburger shack.

It's because they are fresh, not like the others. They are not pre-treated with chemicals/flavoring to last long like the other junk food establishents do. Have you ever made home made fries? Do they taste like fries form McDonalds/BK/Carls/Diners? No way, they taste like INOUTs fries.

That's funny, dude. I'm from California and I too was sad when I too went to Michigan for college because I missed In N Out.

BTW where do you go to college here? I've got one more sem. left then back to SoCal and In N Out.

Goddamn you people. Now I am salivating thinking about In N Out fries and double doubles.

There are a few reasons as to why our french fries are different then the others:

The first is of course that they are fresh. Every french fry was a whole potato just 4 hours ago. It was peeled and soaked in water, then as the customer can see, diced.

The second is that we use Kennebec potatos. These potatos are grown specially for In-N-Out in the Central Valley.

The third is that we use 100% cholesterol free cotton seed oil. Less fat, less cholestoral, and cooks in only 5:15.

The fourth is that when we origionally salt them on the portioner, we use a special mixture. It includes salt, pepper, and other natural flavoring ingredients.

So, if you do not like our fries, you can always add more salt, as I do; or you can get them animal style. And if for some reason you are weird and dont like animal style fries, you can always get a cheese fry!

Any questions, feel free to let me know.

Chris

Yeah, I have. I love both home made and In-N-Out. But there are other oils in the world than the canola oil they use. May I quote from thier web site:

Quote:
100% pure, cholesterol-free vegetable oil.

The fries tasted different, for a couple reasons. One, the oil, as state above. Two, different potatos. Three, different size/shape pieces and different. Four, diffenent cooking time/temp/technique.

I love their fries, don't get me wrong.

You're all bastards because I was going to wait a little longer for lunch and figure out where to go and all. But now I must immediately go to the In-N-Out down the street. Unfortunately the LAX one is a 35-40 min drive and just a bit out of range for an In-N-out only run. May you all rot in hell  Silly haha

I can certainly understand the desire to drive an unreasonable distance. My freshman year at college in Prescott, the nearest one was in north phoenix. By the end of the year, I wanted it so bad I was scrambling to find someone to drive the 70 miles but no one would. Finally we decided to go to a Diamondbacks game (that same day) and stop at In-N-Out on the way. Thankfully at the end of the year they started construction on a new one in town and it was finished by the time I came back for soph. year.

Thanks, you saved me some driving time! I didn't know they had one in Phoenix! I was planning on a drive to SAN. I had the same issue with Del Taco. I moved from Vancouver WA and they just got one and I moved to Detroit. While in Detroit the lord answered my prayers and built one at Dearborn and Telegraph!! then I moved to Dallas and no Del Taco. The cool thing is we have Taco Bueno and it totally rocks. I got to admit that I've done a lot of burgers in my time, but In-N-Out is super special. I've got to recalculate my road trip to Phoenix. Thanks for the info.

There are actually 8 in the Phoenix area (unfortunately for your sake none in Tucson) and are all relatively next to another if your going to be driving from Texas. I would suggest waiting till the fall and then going to the one in Tempe (It's walking distance from ASU so I think that explains itself). So seeing as you only have to drive to phoenix now, that will shave 6 hours off your drive

Thanks for the link. I really thought this was a CA only chain. We have a chain out here that is not bad called Whataburger dating from the 1950's. I believe they have one in Tucson? Totally different than an In-N-Out but worthy of an honorable mention.
