Favourite National Anthem Besides Your Country?

Fri Aug 04, 2006 8:08 am

My favourites would be:

#1 United States
#2 UK

Probably my own country's national anthem on a third place if I could choose

I like Israel's athem, really fits with the nations past. I also find France's anthem, La Marseillaise, very beautiful.
Texas- it's like a whole different country!

(2) The "Khazakstan Anthem" that Borat sang at a minor league baseball game--it went on forever!!! Laughed my ass off!! Check it out:

Besides the US national anthem...

I favour the former Soviet national anthem: "Gosudarstvenny Gymn Soyuza Sovetskikh Sotsialisticheskikh Respublik".

I recently found the official piano sheet music for this beautiful piece on the "Russian Anthems Museum" website ( http://www.hymn.ru/index-en.html )
and printed it off. (It's the 1977 version, if you want to find it). I play it on the piano nearly every day! It has an honoured place in my large library of sheet music for piano.

I even played it as a solo in a recent concert I gave at my college (King's College London)!

I would have to go with the following...

1. Italy (Sounds like a fun drinking song, especially at the end.)
2. Russia (Sounds like a cold Russian winter)
3. Canada (Even I sing along with it at hockey games in the US)

Oh my... the full-blown old version, complete with revisionist territorial claims (first verse) and hilarious nonsense (second verse). Small wonder that version is only just sung by neo-nazis nowadays. The embarrassment would surely kill anybody else! Big grin

I'm glad we stuck with just the third verse; That one is actually quite nice.

My own nominees:

- Soviet Union / Russia (fantastic piece!)
- European Union (Beethoven's Ode to Joy - classic!)
- France (incredibly brutal and bloody lyrics!)
- Japan (a bit weird, but cool!)

Question: Does the Vatican state have an actual national anthem?

I have to wonder how much hearing some of these anthems influences our choices. I watch a lot of American sports, and the anthem or God Bless America and Oh Canada are always performed.

With that said, I have also lived thoughout the Caribbean and Central America and I must say there are others here which are pretty good.

In no order I would suggest you at least check the words and music of:

Belize, Trinidad, Jamaica and yes, even the Bahamas.

Since I'm in USA, that one will be #1 for me...
But Sweden is #2 due to that being my 'heritage' country..
And Denmark has some good music in theirs also...

BTW, based on this, anyone know where I can find a good quality MP3 of the Swedish anthem with lyrics being sung?

Isn't the German National Anthem based on a Hymn? I vaguely remember a Hymn with the lines "Zion city of our God" and "He whose Word cannot be broken" from my childhood days..

Thanks, pious a.netters, for any clarification...

The Maple Leaf Forever is OK, but I find it a bit too flashy, and too typical of a marching song. I much prefer O Canada.

There is one other song that I like, which is also not an official national anthem, but was written to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Canadian liberation of the Netherlands. It is called 50th Anniversary March. It was written by a Canadian, who actually happens to be the father-in-law of my band teacher! We played it at our school's Remembrance Day ceremony, with the composer watching!  Smile

South Africa would be my favourite one (other than my native NZ). I love the fact that they took a song which protested against apartheid, and the national anthem of the old South Africa, and put them together. It sounds magical...

I'm not quite certain I understand what you're saying, but given I live here in Australia, I thought I was counted out from including it too. Even so, Waltzing Matilda isn't the national anthem, although it could be called the national song. A good friend of mine, as Aussie as they come, always jokes to me when the rugby is on: "you Kiwis have one thing over us. You do a war dance. We sing about a suicidal sheep thief." I don't mind Advance Australia Fair, but it just lacks something for me. I would be very supportive if 'We Are Australian' or something derived from it were to be made the national anthem here... Anyway, let's not divert too much from the thread...

Of course, so this in no way is any kind of a reliable poll.

Everyone in North America voted for their own country's anthem (and the OP clearly stated 'BESIDES your country'... boy did they follow that to the letter!), and the country's anthem they most often hear in sporting events.

In rugbier nations, they all voted for those countries. In football nations in Europe, they voted for those...

Definitely 'The Star-Spangled Banner' in first place. The 'Marseillaise' second; who (if they share my quirky sort of sense of humour anyway) can resist a enormously-tuneful national anthem that calls on the citizens to take up arms and overthrow the government?  Smile "Oh Canada!' third, helluva nice tune.

My own anthem doesn't figure. A recent introduction, officially known as 'Advance Australia Fair,' but unofficially known as 'Gert' (from 'Our land is GIRT by sea...'). The only national anthem that will ever properly make it in Australia is 'Waltzing Matilda', with new words that don't commemorate a drowned sheep-stealer quite so obviously......

As far as my favorite behind the Star Spangled Banner, I'd have to go with the Republic of Ireland's Amhrán na bhFiann. Why is because of heritage reasons mainly.

There's been an on-and-off campaign going on for years to change the United States' national anthem to "America the Beautiful."

Here's an mp3 of it by the US Continental Army Band. LINK

O beautiful for spacious skies,
For amber waves of grain,
For purple mountain majesties
Above the fruited plain!
America! America!
God shed his grace on thee
And crown thy good with brotherhood
From sea to shining sea!

O beautiful for pilgrim feet
Whose stern, impassion’d stress
A thoroughfare for freedom beat
Across the wilderness!
America! America!
God mend thine ev’ry flaw,
Confirm thy soul in self-control,
Thy liberty in law!

O beautiful for heroes proved
In liberating strife,
Who more than self their country loved,
And mercy more than life!
America! America!
May God thy gold refine,
Till all success be nobleness
And ev’ry gain divine!

O beautiful for patriot dream
That sees beyond the years
Thine alabaster cities gleam,
Undimm’d by human tears!
America! America!
God shed his grace on thee
And crown thy good with brotherhood
From sea to shining sea!

Australia (Advance Australia Fair)
French (Marsellies)
Deutshland (only because it sounded really nice with 70,000 people in downtown Stuttgart during the world cup!)

As for all those that like the Soviet Anthem, the Russian and Soviet anthems have the exact same music and half the same words.
