How Do You Finance Your Tickets?

Sat Aug 05, 2006 6:48 pm

I really like to travel, but my wallet puts a hold on it too often. Although I have a decent income and travel "non-rev", I just cannot understand how some of you here manage to travel that much. I'm not talking about the business traveller of course, but when I read the user profile's of some of the frequent travellers, I often see that a lot of A.net members are still students.

It's not only the airline ticket, but also the additional costs like car rental/ hotel/restaurant etc etc.

I admit being a bit jealous  Yeah sure , just wonder how you guys finance all these trips!

work...our family owns a company which has a substantial turnover each year which i gain a dividend from, i tend to chop up the price between work & dividends from my share.

usually-fare paid from work earnings
accomodation and expenses from dividends...rest get's re-invested and the money made on that usually pays for the next trip. vast majority of my trips are spotting orientated.

I work, my wife works, both for airlines gaining staff travel privelages in the process and we still can't travel like some bastards on here!!

I do the odd trip now and then, but not usually overnight as the additional cost of car hire and accomodation is prohibitive!

It's just not fair!!  hissyfit

I hoard cash and generally don't spend all that much. I don't like using my credit card as it just means I have to pay more off in the long term.

I work to get money from which I pay my trips.
Since I don't have a Credit Card I loan the money from my mom/dad to book on-line and I pay them back afterwards.

I save up my money, as I don't have any credit cards (I use my debit card to book things, and have never had any issues using it.) to use (No sense paying for a trip many months or even years afterwards.).

When I used to work in the industry and flew non-rev, all of my trips were planned as day trips (one of the first flights in, one of the last flights out). I did this because I knew I couldn't afford a hotel room on a ramper's salary. I only ever got stuck anywhere overnight once and ended up staying at the airport overnight (I could afford the cheapest room that was available, but at the time, $100 was a bit more than I as willing to pay for a hotel room).

Work flies me around, they pay the tix, I rack up the miles. So go to gollege and get a job that treats you the same way, and pays well.

Oh, before I forget, marrying a wife that makes even more money than I, and who travels more than I, sure helps things.

My dad paid so far.
I guess he wanted my sister and I to see the world while we can afford it. You only live once, so while you have the money to do so, don't hesitate. My dad loves travelling and so do I and my sister now too.

So far I have been to over 30 different countries, been to the US alone over 30 times, so I think that I am very privileged to have a dad that has been able to take us around the world.

Put an alloted amount of money you get from each pay check into a seperate account (or just keep tabs on it) and keep doing that until you have enough for a trip. If you don't work-well good luck....

Many live on credit - way beyond their means - also why so many 16-20ish year olds drive high end cars. . .

Good thread here, I have also asked myself how can these people afford to travel at their age. I see some younger than me and fly more than I do.

Credit cards are not the way to go to satisfy your travel needs. They will just get you into financial problems if one is not careful with them. I pay my trip with my debit card, I take my credit card along just in case I run out of cash.

Money!

Signed,
Capt. Obvious

Seriously: I don't travel all that much, and when I do it's either for business (which they pay for), a trip to a race (I'm an avid sports car racing fan), or to MCO to visit the grandparents. My race trips so far have only been to ATL , but I might add MRY later this year.

So basically, I save up, and my trip is usually to an otherwise pretty mundane destination. I hate the sun and fear open water, so the usual "sunny beachside" destinations hold no interest. My sister is now a London resident, so I may end up there at some point.

Well I am 15 and 3/4's so as far as vacations and what not go they are at my parents expence. But every now and then as I live in ABQ I use some money of my own or Miles as I have many of those to take day trips just for flying to PHX, DFW, DEN, SLC or places equally as close and those are at my expence of either Miles or Money.

P.S the only reason I have miles without A credit card is because I collect them thru airline websites and I have my mom's remaining Dividend miles as She can no longer stand US(LOL). The miles I collect with are AA, DL, CO, WN, US, and F9. and occasinaly(as I also pay my way thru flight training)I scrape up some cash to do a mileage run. Most of my mile come from Family vacations to Europe (sorry if spelling is wrong) and trips to my grandparents in PHL or cousins in SDF.

I pay my flights with AmEx but sometimes also with my Shithansa Visa card. AmEx and Visa are sending me a statement every month and debit the stated sum from my bank account. That's how I pay my airline tickets usually but sometimes I am also using collected miles.

I usually use credit cards, but the wife has grounded me at the moment, due to high credit card bills from things other than travel.

I can get decent (Marriott, Sheraton, Hilton hotels for around $50 -$100 a night. I used to get free car rental vouchers through work but this has been stopped now Sad

Mom and dad pay for it, the new era in parenting: Let your children want for nothing by give them everything they want and then never having to deal with the hard issue of telling them no. I have a friend whos kid goes to a High School that the parkling lot is a myriad of BMWs, Mercedies, with a few Corvetts, hummers and even a few Dodge Viper to boot. His kid alway complains that his car is used and sucks but my buddy tells him that at least he earned the money to buy it himself and if he wants a 60K Hummer save then your cash and buy it!
It's politically sensitive, but it's going to happen.

1. Work
2. Credit card, paid in full when bill comes in - I do NOT carry a balance, ever
3. Miles - but we've only used them once. We saved miles for eight years with the intent to fly first class to Australia - and that's exactly what we did, on British. Now I have enough miles to do it again - but this time we're looking at flying Cathay Pacific business class to New Zealand!  Smile

These all interact, as well - for work, I try to fly on carriers that give me Alaska miles. I have an Alaska Airlines credit card that gives me miles for spending money! My work travel also gives me hotel points, which works nicely too.
But that was when I ruled the world

This is what I do. I work monday to Friday from 2pm til 11pm. Most of my flying is on weekends and most airlines offer last minute weekend fares and whatever I can find, I'll usually book it. Also, I rarely fly during the high peak. All my flying is fall/winter/spring. Most airlines usually have bargains during the non-travel peak. ie. I fly from ORF-LAX for $230 r/t and get 10,000 skymiles for that price.

I have alot of spending money laid on the side. I get $900 a month for rent and I only pay $400 month on a house. So, the other $500 goes to traveling, credit card bills, and auto parts, and savings while my work income goes to flying and other needs.

I have jumpseat benefits, and ironically I was just talking to a fellow a.netter tonight about why we don't use this benefit more often. We are truly blessed to have it. Maybe we'll do some flying this week!

Before that - I always paid cash. If you can't afford to go - then don't go (unless it's an emergency).

Don't like wearing huge amounts of credit card debt. I usually save like mad and limit the amount of expenditure on my credit card just incase I need some in an emergency.
