Texas School District Bans Cleavage...the Horror!

Sun Aug 06, 2006 7:11 am

http://cbs2chicago.com/national/topstories_story_216101303.html

Fromt the article...The new dress code reads, in part, “The display of cleavage is unacceptable. Low cut blouses, tops, sweaters, etc. with plunging necklines are not allowed."

If this rule goes through it is a horrible day in the history of teenage cleavage. High school boys around Arlington, TX will forever be scarred emotionally by not being allowed to see some boobies. Everybody knows everything is bigger in Texas so why try to hide them? It just doesn't make sense.

I am a supporter of the idea of school uniforms in school. School should not be a fashion show, and parents should not be forced to pay a fortune for the latest fashions because their kid can't bear not to dress as cool as the other guys/girls.

That said, I have nothing against the girls' uniforms emphisizing cleavage Big grin

This is most unfortunate. I know Catholic (high) school uniforms to be more revealing and telling than this...

What about an exemption for ladies prominently wearing a Christian cross necklace? Then everyone can get a little religion...  Wink Big grin

Right you are, Airwave.

But CFalk, I am a highschooler, and I don't wear the latest fassions. I wear my old IN-N-OUT shirts. Matter of fact, my newest clothes was 1 pair of shorts and 2 microfiber T shirts for DC, cause it is 100 and humid, and Japan for the next two weeks, where it will be just as hot. I don't want to be a fasion statement at school, I want to be a kid there to learn. I wear the stuff I have. I don't really care what I wear, if ut can fit a 6 foot 170 pound guy, I don't really care what it is, aslong as I am dress, and dressed so I can learn.

OK..so put yourself in the position that the parents of these 14 and 15 year old girls are in. Your daughter is trying to compete with the other girls in attracting attention (prior to the development of judgement to accompany the development of boobs) by wearing the latest in stripper chic to school.

It ain't religion....it's parenting. Sort of refreshing to see parents and teachers removing some distractions from that vault of hormonal hyperactivity they call school.

Stop it....it's the parents who want their kids perhaps a little less forward in their sexuality. Parents are responsible for the emotional and judgemental development of their kids until the kid has the experience to accompany the physical growth.

I get the feeling that there are plenty of guys here who simply want to ogle the 15 year old boobs....and that's natural. Unless you're the father of a 15 year old girl.

Are there any parents of 15 year old girls here who want to weigh in? Are you daughters emotionally and intellectually as mature as their looks and physical appearance may be? Should you as parents be the parent and set limits for them? Do you like it when they dress in stripper chic?

I like stripper chic. I don't particularly like it when my 17 year old niece decides to wear it and her boyfriend ogles here and has less material between his hands and her body.

Oh, so in order to accomodate the less well-off parents, you want to force them to buy twice the clothing? These kids aren't going to wear their uniforms around outside of school! Flawed logic...

The idea of uniforms, or at least strict, non-casual dress codes, is that it signals that while he is in school, it is not play-time. It is not socializing-time. You are in school and you are there to do what they tell you to do. Once you leave school and go home, then you can dress in baggy rapper pants or thongs that go up to your armpits, we don't care.

As for buying 2 sets of clothes, I don't think that's a significant problem. you put in half the wear per day in each set of clothes, so they each last twice as long.

Flawed logic is thinking that the parents are obligated to buy the kids slutty clothes in the first place......or even allowing your kids to dress slutty to school. Too many parents allow their kids to drive past their level of competence in cars and in life, because it's easier and they're busy. Parenting is partly about teaching kids the consequences of their actions, but also preventing kids from making too many mistakes by setting limits so as to minimize the damages.

Don't misunderstand me, I like looking at hooters all day long, but it becomes problematic when you realize that the girls in front of you, when they turn around, are braceface pimply 14 year olds trying desperately to look sexy by wearing tight fitting revealing clothing. The kids in school are distracted enough by sex, why throw it in their faces?

Yeah, but it's difficult to let some things slide by. People who want to satisfy prurient interests at the expense of children sort of piss me off. There's a word for people who think it's ok to exploit young children sexually, and I think it's "fashion designer" (ok...two words).

Going to mostly agree here. Wore a uniform to school through high school, no problems. But the bigger question is should a government entity be telling people how they will be required to dress. I don't like the way children, especially young women are being marketed to ("You are only attractive if you weigh nothing, push your boobs up, and wear tight, revealing clothing with lots of makeup") any more than you do. It is disgusting and it preys on the insecurity of young girls. But is it truly a governmental body's responsibility to regulate what people can wear? If it is a private school it is expected. That's what you signed up for.

On the other hand, the uniforms in Seattle have also supposedly drastically cut down on crime rates and violence in high schools around town, and this has to be considered as well. I realize this is not a full uniform, just part of the more strict revised dress code, but if it helps stem some of the trouble at school then it might be worth it.

It's a tricky issue to tackle.

We don't allow her to buy those clothes and our school district here in a suburb of Houston does not allow them to wear that kind of clothing either. According to my older daughter who is in high school the fashion police are on patrol everyday and more than a few students have had letters sent home to their parents and a couple have even been given the choice of going home and changing, or wearing a plain t-shirt provided by the school for the day. That's both boys and girls. The boys were wearing shirts with inflamatory statements on them. The girls were either wearing the same or wearing a top that was too revealing.

The school board, more than any other government entity should have that right. It is supposed to be a collaboration of the parents and school officials. I don't see any rights being violated here since you are talking, for the most part, about minors. If you expect the school to take responsibility for them for 8 hours or more a day, you should be willing to let them dictate a few rules of behavior.

Only if it has the support of the parents who elect the school board. This is not the general population and the Supreme Court has ruled on more than one occasion that students, who are also unemancipated minors and subject to the rules of their parents, may be told how to behave in schools and in the homes of their parents.

But, just for the sake of discussion, the government does regulate our manner of dress merely by enacting laws that prevent people from walking nude, or allowing men with no shirts, but not women. Our society makes the laws, and our mores dictate what society is willing to tolerate both in behaviour and laws.

The funny part about that is, and it's not generally known, but there is no state law in Texas to stop a woman from going topless. There may be local laws, and I'm sure there are, but at the state beaches, if she wants to doff it, she legally can.

I wannas like what? a freaking pair of jeans and a shirt? I agree with you that alot of kids are spoiled in America but uniforms are idiotic, I want to wear what I think is comfortable not what the hell the school board or the government tells me to. Thank god I never went to an learning institution that had these rules.

On a sidenote, American elementary and high schools are a joke with all these rules. I could not believe when I moved here from Europe one needed a "hall pass" to leave the classroom. Everybody was constantly wanting to know where I was going and constantly being watched like I was in some kind of corrective facility. Joke. Heres another joke, you could be suspended from junior high school for fighting outside of school grounds. Fighting should be dealt by parents and possibly police if its anything serious, but to suspend someone because they want to settle something with their mate is piss poor. (Ahh yes same goes for someone trying to defend themselves when someone attacks them in school...automatic suspension for being in a fight)

parents should not be forced to pay a fortune for the latest fashions because their kid can't bear not to dress as cool as the other guys/girls

Or, parents could take responsibility for raising their kids, and teach them some common sense and a reasonable set of values.

Quoting Falcon84 (Reply 30):
We don't worry about that, because our kids love shopping at Goodwill and Salvation Army. You can get near-brand new clothes for pennies.

I've been buying most of my clothes from Goodwill lately. It is absolutely amazing what kind of clothes people get rid of around here! I have bought shirts at Goodwill for $4 that are nicer than shirts I've bought new at "nice" stores for $40!

It's nice to know that the school district is abreast of these issues.

Usually, the boobs in government couldn't care less.
What's fair is fair.
