Espn Programing

Sun Aug 06, 2006 8:38 am

I know ESPN broadcasts a wide variety of sporting events, but on ESPN2 right now they are televising a eating contest! Why would they put that on TV? It's not even a sport!

That's because the contest is santioned by the International Federation of Competitive Eating....

The Johnsonville Brat-Eating World Championship, a sanctioned
competition conducted by the International Federation of Competitive
Eating, will feature top-ranked competitive eaters from around the world,
including the top three eaters in the world: Takeru Kobayashi, Sonya "The
Black Widow" Thomas and rookie sensation, Joey Chestnut. The professional
eaters will compete for more than $23,000 in prizes. In addition to the
world championship, a competition will feature Wisconsin's best brat-eaters
as they put away brats for pride, glory and the $2,000 top prize.

The International Federation of Competitive Eating (IFOCE), the
governing body of all stomach-centric sports, conducts more than 70 events
annually, including the Nathan's Famous Fourth of July International Hot
Dog Eating Contest in Coney Island, N.Y. The competitive eating community,
which numbers more than 3,000 veteran and rookie athletes, travels the
nation in search of top titles and the glory that they provide.

By definition a sport is something you practice in, compete in, and have tournaments for with winners and losers (non-winners). So technically it is. I don't buy into it, but you cannot argue with Sports Psychology

It just seems like a dumb thing to put on TV.

My favorite programming block was the World Series of Darts followed by the World Series of Poker. What's next, checkers?
