World Basketball Champ-Can Anyone Beat The U.S?

Tue Aug 08, 2006 9:39 am

The World Games are coming up in Japan in short order, and there's one big question: you have a young, motivated, hungry, immensely talented and proud U.S. team this year. With the likes of LeBron, D-Wade, 'Melo, Elton Brand, Chris Bosh, Kirk Heinrich, and a deep bench, can anyone beat this year's U.S. squad.

I'm betting they'll win it all, and go unbeaten. I just can't see anyone beating a team like this which has so much motivation this time aroud.

Probably not..but then again its till baseball season, college and pro football are starting soon, so in the big picture, the world games playing across the date line, most people will just yawn...  cloudnine

Exactly how US basketball fans thought in the Olympic Games and in the last World Cup of Basketball in the UNITED STATES. You keep disrespecting your oposition, you shall keep on losing... I predict Argentina will keep it's unbeaten streak against 'the best' basketball team in the world, if you catch my irony there.

Some in the US always bring up this 'diva complex', like 'we don't care' about international competition. You do care when your behind gets whipped to shape. But regardless the world doesn't care if the US cares. The World Cup of all sports will go on and be more profitable than ever, and the US will still never win anything in international competition where it really REALLY counts.

Sorry pal, but there are a lot of differences with this team. 1.) The coach. Larry Brown might be a good coach, but he was the wrong man for the job. He favored playing the veterans whose lackluster play cost them any chance of winning. Players like Melo sat on the bench and rotted. 2.) The Roster. The previous roster was full of just names, not names of people who WANTED to play and win. The roster is younger, features guys who specialize in defense, guys who can shoot. Its a more well rounded diversified team. 3.) The teams desire. The current team wants to win. They want to regain the title of being the best. They may not do it now, or in '08, but they woill play with heart and skill and put on a much better performance than the last team.

The U.S. Cared for about 45 minutes after the last Basketball Debacle. Our own Major Leagues are so competitive that we don't care about "World Competitions". Sue us.

I rest my case. Even if the NFL preseason games are about as entertaining as an LHMark blog yet again on German Beer. http://beercraft.blogspot.com

I enjoy NFL football, but the preseason for the most part is a waste of time. It's just a tryout, mostly, for a bunch of guys you may never hear from again. It's OK when the starters are in for the first quarter, but after that, it isn't worth watching one bit.

I'll take LeBron, D-Wade and 'Melo over preseason football any day.

Definitely Argentina... We could, we can, and we will be able to forever Big grin

I think that both proved teams are great, as well as Yugoslavia for example, which may be able to beat them too... But nobody knows... We will have to wait... I didn't think we were able to beat the "dream team" in the last world cup, but we did...

Not sure why the United States has to prove themselves in this competition. It is insane to have these high quality NBA players risking injury for what?! My hats off to the rest of the world for catching up to us in our sports. I mean look at the quality in baseball alone. Incredible talent in Korea, Japan, PR, Cuba, Central and South America. And the up swing in excellence with basketball world wide is phenomenal. Now if we could just get our Soccer Team to stop embarrassing us! With as much as we play the game here you would think we would be better. JMO

Pride. And some people want to represent their country. I'd love to, in any sport.

Whoa buddy, don't kid yourself into thinking Argentina will become a basketball dynasty there. You won the gold medal fair and square, and as a Spurs fan, I absolutely love watching Manu Ginobili play. But to get cocky and act like no one is in the same class is askin for trouble. I believe US will get the gold back this year for the same reasons KROC mentioned, but I personally don't get to hyper about it only because it's more fun to root for the USA in a sport where we are not the overwhelming number 1 in, say ice hockey.

Pride! Tell that to the owner when his million dollar player blows his knee out.

True, it is good to represent your country, especially when you are proud of it.

Yea, we agree about something!

Unfortunately, AA61hvy, the honor of playing for your nation is lost among many premadonna athletes and fans of this modern day. It used to be an honor and privelage to compete under your flag, but for some, the almighty dollar, or endorsements rule the day.

It's nice to see young guys like LeBron, D-Wade and 'Melo WANTING to play for the U.S., and determined to bring home gold.

I feel they're going to do it this year.

Obviously I'm not a fan of James, but I'm rooting for him while he represents the US. Go King James!

What have you got against the guy, dude? He isn't a Mo Clarrett; he does loads of charity work in the CLE-CAK area; he's a great player; he goes to local schools to read to kids; he's been everything you could have asked for coming out of H.S.

I don't get it. Or, to go "Twister" on you, is it a whole Ohio thing?  Big grin

You are right, as a person he does donate a lot of time, and I would never take that away from the guy. I was more or less forced to not like him. I lived with a bunch of guys from CLE and my whole year was Lebron this Lebron that. I got tired of it, so I'm anti-Lebron. Plus I think he is a very selfish player.

A forward who averages almost 7 assists per game is hardly selfish. Like any great player, there are times when he takes a game over, and I wouldn't stop him if that's the case. Magic, Bird, MJ, Kobe, Dr. J-all of them were called "selfish" but they weren't. They understood the game, as LBJ does, and they know when to be the man, and know when to get the ball to the other men.

At this point in the young man's career, I find it hard to swallow to mention him in the same breath as the legends you said. But everyone is entitled to their own opinion.
