Do You Play The Lottery?

Tue Aug 08, 2006 2:22 pm

I've never even bought a scratch off, but I read today that some cheese workers won $208 million. Anyone won anything worth bragging about on a lotto ticket?

I think I might start playing!

My family has a thing with tossing in a scratch ticket with Christmas cards and birthday cards, and the most I won was $8.00 on a $4.00 ticket. I was eating lunch in the cafeteria at university when some guy jumped up and said he won $1000.00 but still, nothing compared to the $208 000 000!

I found about 30 scratch-off tickets in a parking lot of my elementary school when I was 10 years old. I turned them in to the office and after a week nobody had claimed them so I scratched them off and won about 50 bucks total. That was a ton of money to a 10 year old and I spent it on all sorts of stuff over a few weeks.
______

Nowadays our family has a tradition of buying one for every person when we have get-to-gethers and we all scratch them off together. The most anyone has won from those was about 30 bucks. We use the profits to buy more and if we win more than what it cost to buy the tickets, the cycle continues.

The odds are about 1 in 5 to win somthing so its a cheap fun thing to do.

A double plus is that the Tennessee lottery has paid for my education for the past few years.

I will pick up a ticket for 10 draws (2 a week) for the MegaMillions game. $1 per draw is the most I'll spend since you 1 or 2 chances in 13 billion (or whatever the odds are) isn't going to make a difference.

I haven't bought a scratcher in years and never here in Georgia. I got them now and then in Florida but never won more than $5 or a free ticket.

I've won $70 on a scratch-off. The first time my mother played the Texas Lottery, she got five of six numbers. If I remember correctly, the payout was around $7,000. Oh, how close I was to getting a Ferrari for my sixteenth birthday.  devil

Every once in a while, I play MegaMillions. The odds and payoffs are much better than the Texas Lotto.

Occasionally, usually when the jackpot is high enough to make the news. Not that it increases my chances, but at least I might actually make 10 bucks off of 3 numbers instead of 3-5 bucks. IMHO, the prices for 3,4,5 or 6 correct numbers is just way too low compared to 6+super number to make it actually worthwhile to play it on a regular basis.

On a $208 million jackpot if you took the cash option you would get about $130 million or so and then get taxed about 40% on that. Approximate numbers but good enough for government work.

Only 40%? Lucky, in Germany that would be more like 55-60%. Of course that's still quite some money, but it reduces the bizjet choices  Wink .

That's the one good thing about the Texas Lotto. Historically, winners who have chosen the cash value option, net 55%-60% of the advertised jackpot. This is considerably better than other state and multi-jurisdictional lotteries.

Can't remember right now, but IIRC, no jackpot has reached the €30 million border yet. Which is peanuts compared to US jackpots.

Yeah Nothing compared to the US. In Australia Jackpots are not even close to the US. The highest jackpot in Australia from memory I think was $30 million. The good thing is thats is TAX FREE

Once or twice a week I buy a couple $2.00 scratch offs. Most ive ever won was $100.00. Usually i just get the money I spent on the tickets back, and thats enough for me. Thou ive gotten $10.00 and $15.00 recently. But its usually just good clean fun.
