8 Hours In Berlin, What To Do?

Tue Aug 08, 2006 5:12 pm

I will be in Berlin next month (TXL) for 8 hours arriving in the morning. Any ideas to get a quick feel for Germany's famous city?

Too bad it's only 8 hours. But I would like to see the top two or three spots and find a great place for lunch.

Danke schön!

Check my pofile. I always suggest to visit Prenzlauer Berg (U2 Eberswalderstr. Ask for directions to Kulturbrauerei and Kollwitzplatz).
Another great spot is Scheunenviertel in the district of Mitte: New Synagogue, Hackesche Hoefe and so on.

Brandenburger Tor, Reichstag, Gendarmenmarkt and maybe Potsdamer Platz are places to visit as well.

As for dining: Comparatively cheap (10 Euro plus drinks): Cafe Orange left hand side of New Synagogue. A great restaurant that comes close to a one star rating but won't force you to wear a tie would be Remake (Grosse Hamburger Strasse, within walking distance of New Synagogue): 40 - 60 Euro for a complete menu inclusive wine.
Then there's the restaurant inside Literaturverein (Schlueterstr. not far from Zoo Station and Kurfuerstendamm) and of course the restaurants around Kollwitzplatz and Helmholtzplatz at Prenzlauer Berg. Pres. Clinton and Madame Albright had dinner at Gugelhof, Kollwitzplatz if that's not going to scare you away. Big grin

As for dining....look at NoUFO's post, he's more into the scene than me right now.
For sightseeing: Get to Brandenburg Gate/Pariser Platz, that's where the Quadriga is, and Hotel Adlon and all those embassies (the English embassy is lovely to look at) , from there take a short walk to Potsdamer Platz, maybe a little detour through Tiergarten...no worries about getting lost. There a quick stop at Caffee e Gelate...a must! best ice in town, and the coffees are equally good (at least they were last time I went there).

If it's a hot day, stay in Tiergarten for awhile, watch the lakes, a beer at Neue Cafe am See maybe.

Wherever you go: The way back to TXL is relatively short, the airport is way inside the city perimeter, and by taxi a mere 15 minutes to Kurfürstendamm/Zoo (which is city center West).

Does this also apply to the rush hour?

NO of course not but it doesn't stretch time limits THAT much and besides there's always a subway station close by. Have a ride to "Jakob-Kaiser-Platz", and from THERE taka a bus or a taxi to the terminal (and if push comes to shove...walk). Since it is not very far, it's a good way to get around rush-hour.

Take the bus line "TXL" from TXL. So you don't have to change to subway or S-Bahn or another bus line. The "TXL -line" will take you directly from TXL to the heart of Berlin. You could leave the bus at the stop "Unter den Linden" after it took you right through the "Regierungsviertel" with the "Kanzleramt" and the Reichstag. From there it's only a short walk to the "Brandenburger Tor" and to the "Reichstag" and not too far to "Potsdamer Platz" (you could take a S-Train from unter den Linden to Potsdamer Platz).

Or you could stay on the bus until its last stop "Prenlauer Berg" - see NoUfo's post.

The bus ride from TXL to "Unter den Linden" takes nearly 30minutes and the bus leaves every 10 min from TXL.
This should be the most uncomplicated way to see some of the major sights of Berlin.

That should read Fasanenstrasse, not Schlueterstrasse, sorry.

The TXL line stops at Prenzlauer Berg? I thought Alexanderplatz was end of line ..., actually I'm pretty sure ....

I think they changed this recently. I know the TXL-line used to end at Alexanderplatz. But now, the vbb-homepage shows Prenzlauerberg as last stop while they also added Mollstr./Prenzlauer Allee as another stop. I guess it's a sign for Prenzlberg becoming more international.

Confused Can't find it, only the note that the bus now stops at the new main station before heading to Alexanderplatz which of course makes sense.

Anyway, I'm closer to S-Schoenhauser Allee than Prenzlauer Allee, so I'll stick to either taxi or S-Bahn.

CHECKPOINT CHARLIE MUESEUM! Can't recommend this enough. I absolutely loved it. Had the best time checking that out and the surrouding area.

Potsdamer Platz on the other hand was just one big uppity-snob snore. Avoid it completely... (We stayed at the Marriott there.. not worth the bucks.)

I would say for 8 hours, if it's your first time, hit the token tourist spots - Brandenburg Gate, Reichstage, and Unter den Linden are all right by each other, as is the Soviet memorial, and the new(ish) Holocaust Memorial, which is a fantastic (but tearful) trip - keep your eye out as an American, the new US Embassy is being built right across the street from it - last time I was in Berlin in January, it was still pretty much getting the ground set, I'm curious how far it is now. Take a walk down Unter den Linden to the TV Tower, and if the line is short enough, take a ride up for the fantastic views of the huge city. Right next to the TV Tower is Alexanderplatz U-Bahn station (at least, I believe it's Alexanderplatz) if you need to get travelling at that point.

The full title is Paule's Metal Eck, and to get in you have to walk through a giant fiberglass demon head. It's in Friedrichshain, which is quite a distance from TXL.

It is, and Alexanderplatz is not worth a visit. God, I can't wait for the wrecking ball to come.

Correct, Simon-Dach-Strasse more precisely. I was there the other day with a friend. Not at Paule's Metal Eck, though, since she's a good christian and I thought it wasn't the place for her. Yes, we have some christians, too, but she is not at all evangelising and she can down quite an amount of communion wine without showing hints of getting drunk, so she's fun to hang around with.

If Clipper wants a beer and the weather is fine; I'd suggest to try one of those "Strandbars" alongside river Spree. There are couple next to the new main station, but my favourit (less snobby) is at Monbijoupark between New Synagogue and Museums Island. Or the Neue Cafe am See Andreas mentioned.
And if the weather isn't too great: There are plenty of bars and restaurants to choose from around New Synagogue and Hackesche Hoefe.

I had a lot of fun at the Strandbar, too, but not as much as at Paule's...

Well, I think it's hideous, too. But if you're American you probably find the communist architecture around the Alex interesting.

But but, I thought this what a typical Scotsman looks like, that is, as long as he or she (difficult to tell as far as Scots are concerned) doesn't wear plaids and skirts.

I wonder if they have soap dispenser with that motif.

Of course it's not worth a visit, it's a crappy train/U-Bahn station...I was just saying it's at the end of Unter den Linden if a quick metro station is needed
