Poor Penquins!

Wed Aug 09, 2006 8:44 pm

Glad most of them survived. Can't these truckers slow down a bit. Great pic of a woman with one in her arms.

It's good to know that many of them survived....
Imagine the scene had it been the first truck!! The one w/ the snakes and aligators!! I bet you that would've been a nightmare to many!

...And you know this was a speed related accident how?

Reports I have seen indicate that the driver lost control after overcorrecting from swerving to avoid road debris. You can tump a trailer on it's side at well under highway speed limits.

By the simple fact that I have driven every interstate in this country just about and know how these truckers drive. They need to slow down.

I'm glad that 21 of the little critters made it through okay. Sorry to read that four of them died.

An octopus named Olivia survived the accident, as well.

Ah... guilty as charged simply because they are truckers?

Or did you mean to say that you've actually been following these two particular drivers around "every interstate in this country" and therefore know that these particular truckers were driving too fast? You dirty stalker you.

Sad that the ones that died seemed to survive the crash and got hit by cars immediately after the crash. Sad Scene.  frown

I just found that there seems to be some discrepancy as to how many penguins were killed. One article now says that seven, not four, died; it says that three that survived the accident were killed by passing motorists.

I haven't seen a trucker driving faster than 7 mph over the speed limit for over six months. They're a hell of a lot safer now than they ever have been.

A penguin had to take his car for engine repair.

The mechanic told the penguin to leave his car with him for about two hours to find out whats wrong.

The penguin goes across the street to a grocery store, climbs into a freezer and ate ice cream.

When the two hours was up the penguin went back to the garage to find out what happened to his car.

When the penguin entered the garage, the mechanic looked at him and said, "Looks like you blew a seal."

The penguin replied, "No. That's ice-cream."

I agree -- it's quite sad.

I did read in an article that the ones that survived followed one another into an area by the side of road. So they had the collective wisdom to escape the traffic. Such smart little creatures!

I just found a great video of what happened when a replacement truck finally did arrive.

Take a look at what happens at about 2 minutes, 16 seconds into the video. There's a penguin running around as if to say, "Hey! Don't forget about me!"

 Big grin

That's neat. He was obviously aware of his enclosure, and also the human's ability to remove him from his confines.

That or as they said on the news today, was distracted by something that caused him to swerve.

According to the news story the accident happened on either 59 or 259 in N.E. Texas, neither of which are interstates. Many sections of 59 up in that area of the state are just 2 lane road.

Quoting AerospaceFan (Reply 8):

Nope, just 4. One died in the wreck, 3 others mowed down by passing cars. One with a broken wing that will have to heal up. I was surprised to hear one of the animal keepers say they had to work quickly because penquins can't survive long in temps over 60 degrees and that would be hard to find outdoors in Texas in August.
Warm winds blowing, heating blue skies, and a road that goes forever, I'm going to Texas!

Awesome video! Thanks for posting. I love the part when the guy tries to pet one and it bites at his hand. They are such great creatures. I love how there were so many people with cameras in hand when they arrived.

I've always thought a penguin would be a great pet. I could put it on a leash and take it for walks around the neighborhood. Kinda like a cute puppy, but even more of a chick magnet. The ladies wouldn't be able to resist coming over to pet my penguin  Silly

I was at the Monterrey Bay Aquarium earlier this year and they have some of the NOLA Zoo penguins there for a while. One of the staff (super hot chick BTW) was in there feeding them and she picked one up and petted him for about 10 minutes while talking with another staffer. When she put him down the look of despair and disappointment on that bird's face was priceless.

Did anyone else notice these agregious errors?

Quote:
The wildlife was being transported to Texas from the Indianapolis Zoo while that zoo's ocean exhibit is being remodeled, said Jerri Hamacheck of Moody Gardens.

The truck, also carrying an octopus that was uninjured, was bound for Moody Gardens, a tourist destination in Galveston, an hour south of Houston, a resort spokeswoman said.

So it was somewhere in east Texas, right? Where was the ariticle reporting from?

Quote:

SAN ANTONIO, Texas (Reuters) -- Twenty-one penguins were rescued on a hot east Texas highway Tuesday after a truck carrying the wildlife to a temporary home south of Houston overturned, said a state trooper.

Makes perfect sense to report from San Antonio on an accident that occurred in east Texas.

I'd like to see a follow-up video on how the penguins are doing in a couple of weeks. They're plucky little fellows, so I'm sure they're going to be fine. Heck, they were already pretty happy in the water!  Smile
