Gift Vouchers. What's The Point?

Fri Aug 11, 2006 5:50 am

I just don't get the point of vouchers! You get them at Christmas or on your birthday and it just bugs me whenever I receive them. I mean sure, it's really nice somebody just gave me £5, 10 or £20 out of the goodness of their heart, or through social requirement, but why oh why can't they just give me the cash instead?

The whole idea of giving a shop your money in exchange for what is basically an instore credit note baffles me! How many times have you been given a voucher in one of those poxy cards free you pick up at the till, sometimes there are even 6 to choose from, to find that you have just been awarded £10 or even worse, £5 to spend at Waterstones! (Other good bookshops are available)

Don't you find most of the time the person who gives you the voucher hasn't really thought about what you like but has merely decided to offload a bit of what they like on you in the vague hope you'd like it? I'd frankly recieve a crappy present that has at least had a bit of thought put into it!

At least with cash you can actually put the money to good use if you are low on funds yourself? How many times have you swapped your vouchers with friends or family for hard cash?

I don't care if you don't care but you know what I say? Down with god damn gift vouchers!

Put them in Room 101.

Gift vouchers can be handy if you have no inspiration and can't even think of giving out cash....

I always give gift vouchers to my daughters. That way I know they won't spend MY hard earned on booze.
Now stop worrying about trivial things and go write another excellent trip report

You ungrateful b*stard!  Wink You should be thankful. Vouchers allow you to buy what you want which is better than a gift you might not like. Think about all the people in the world that don't even know what a bloody gift voucher is!!!!!

They don't though! They enable you to buy certain things at a certain shop, or shops that are owned by the same company! Money is universally accepted anywhere!

Alex Dear,

I'm sorry I bought you gift vouchers, I'm really sorry...  Wink It's true, I don't give a damn.... LOL!

In all seriousness, I have £77 of Curry's vouchers sitting in my drawer that I have no idea what I'm going to spend them on and £15 of Thresher's Vouchers that was a gift from one of my clients at work for giving her special attention.... Bollox if you ask me!

Gift vouchers are only of value to the companies from which they are issued. When you purchase one they give you a worthless piece of paper which you pay them money for and until the gift voucher is redeemed they can use the money that the voucher was purchased to generate more money.

I have just read about this in a magazine actually because New Zealand has just reduced the size of most of our coins to about a third of there old size. The new coins have less metal in them and increase the "seignorage" of our currency, which is the difference between the actual value (i.e the value of the metal in the coins) and the value guaranteed by the Reserve Bank. The government is apparently going to make money (over and above the costs for producing the new coins) by reducing the size of the coins as the old larger (higher metallic value) ones have been sold to a South Korean company that are going to melt them down.

Well I should point out at this time that it is better to receive a voucher rather than nothing at all!

Nice way to shoot yourself in the foot there Scotty boy!
