Collections: What Do You Have?

Sat Aug 12, 2006 5:07 am

I have Coca Cola bottles from around the World...only made of glass.
I also have the key cards of the hotels of my trips, and lately I started to keep the maps of the cities I´ve been to.
And you?

I guess the only thing is ticket stubs from rock concerts.

I also am somewhat obsessive about having tons of guitar picks around. Even though I probably had plenty left, I still bought three more packs of 10 last time I was at Guitar Center.

I collect 8tracks tapes as well as LPs and reel to reel tapes.
I am also building a modest collection of 1:500 scale Herpa wings aircraft.

The 8track tapes are the wackiest of my collection.
I have over 2000 8track tapes now. The ones I like the most are the quadraphonic 8tracks and the 1980s issed Columbia House Record Club and RCA record club tapes.

Many people are suprised to see 8track issues of albums from the 1980s such as Wham, Miami Vice Soundtrack, Madonna, Duran Duran, Missing Persons, B52s, Sting, Prince and Michael Jackson's Thriller.

Personally, I have ~165 1:400 and 1:200 scale airliners. I don't collect guns, but I seem to accumulate them. Have a couple dozen commemorative US Mint coin sets. Wish I flew more, or I'd have safety cards ganked from my flights.

Airline manuals. Pilot handbooks for BAC1-11, BAe-146, F-28, DC-8,9,10, L-1011, B-707,727,737,747, 757, 767, ops manuals, flight attendant manuals, fuel service manuals, weight & balance programs, training guides, MEL/CDLs: from dozens of airlines, mostly extinct including PanAm, TWA and Braniff, as well as AFMs from the factory. Probably two thousand pounds of them.

Tumbleweeds. Mostly Russian thistle but some exotics too. Of course this collection is not static - they come and go all the time. Sometimes they pass thorugh in the middle of the night and I don't even get to catalog them.

Rum. I have what I deem to be a lifetime supply at the rate I drink. At least one bottle from every island in the Caribbean.
Happiness is not seeing another trite Ste. Maarten photo all week long.

-1/400 airliners. I have one of every airline that flies into my home airport + a few more. I'm soon to start 1/100 models as well.
-civil aircraft registrations (by my own photograph collection) I'm into the thousands for those.
-boarding passes that I have flown on.
-Aircraft types. If I've flown on one, I tick it off.

Lockheed Constellation models...all types; travel agency, die cast, plastic kits (usually build a couple and keep one of each issue in box), vintage tin, etc. I even have a 1:50 scale card stock Lufthansa model built by one of the professional modelers at GM when I was working there. Impressive, but hard to keep clean.

I was going to take an inventory when we packed and moved, but of course, I didn't. guess I have about 150 - 160 of them.

I also have a collection of original artwork, signed prints and remarques of vintage aircraft (mostly WWII) by recognized aviation artists plus original artwork from various designers at the styling staffs of GM, Ford and Chrysler. Favorites are several 1958 Edsel proposals (all of which look better than the production car).

Which brings up a question. What volume comprises a collection? I was once invited to see a guy's "Corvette collection". He had three...a '68 in a basket, a somewhat ratty 1990 and a C-5 driver (lease car). I don't consider that a collection. Hell, I've had three simultaneous girlfriends at times when I was younger and didn't consider those a collection either. Well - maybe  Smile Regards...jack

As a railway historian, I collect odds and ends related to the railroads that I have interest in. My major interest is antebellum and post antebellum railroads of the Southern United States. I have historical photographs, rare books related to the corporate history of various railroads, passenger tickets, rare letters and passes. The rarest items I have are an acid etched window from an 1880s passenger coach, cast iron decorative pieces from the same coach and a wooden freight car wheel foundry pattern. I have a partial inventory somewhere here and approximately 180 photographs contributed by myself and other collectors I know were used in a commercial publication that I composed a few years ago. It makes a little money for me and helps to share the information that I and others have collected.

Just took a glance over a portion of my railroad collection. Most of the collection is railroad paper as mentioned previously. About a third of it came from my purchase of a collection in St. Louis and the remainder from my research over about a decade. Total number of photographs, drawings and prints is over 500 items. The oldest date to the 1860s and include two United States Military Telegraph Service messages from the Civil War and a cover letter that accompanied a Presidential pardon issued in 1868 complete with seals, a portrait photo of the pardoned man and basic information regarding his employment before and after the war.

Totally unrelated to the railroad stuff is my collection of parking meters. I have something like twenty of them. Two of them were imported from Germany and are of West German manufacture. Pretty much all of them work and I have extra timer movements for parts. One presently does not work as it has a dead battery. The models range from an early Miller Model 50 to the Duncan Miller Model 60, Model 70/VIP up to a modern MacKay with push button for "free" time and a Duncan Model 90S with the Eagle CK timer. The MacKay and Duncan Model 90S are electronic timers with magnetic coin detection. All of the meters work and have functional locks which I have the keys for.
