Jeep Cherokee personally...

If you want something smaller and more economical, go for the VW Golf.

Hmm... I'm not a big fan of the first 2 you mentioned (the Cherokee, Golf, and Jazz are the Liberty, Rabbit, and Fit stateside IIRC), and I can't comment on the Focus since the UK one is different IIRC, but the Golf is what I prefer b/t it and the Jazz (I don't like the Jazz's styling)

I have always liked the Rav4. My mum had one until her crash, and it was a great car.

I don't know, probably is off-topic but my mum owns a Ford Fiesta (2 years old now), witch I suppose shares some technical details with the Focus. Well, three months after buying, the plastic parts began to detach and some other plastic hooks went off their correct places, because the tolerances were incorrect or simply "economy" quality. And no, it didn't happen because of bad-maintenance or a lot of car usage... My mum uses it only for going to supermarket (let's say 100 km every week).

Is it an 06 or 07?

Don't waste your money on that pile of $hit.
If you want a 4by4 go for a Discovery with say 20k on the clock. We have the V8, you may want the diesel, although its a bit sluggish.
The Focus is good, but go for the 1.8 petrol or the TDci diesel.
Golfs are overpriced, but if its a new model, its ace

The Ford may be a good car, but I think that Fords are boring.. at least the ones they sell in Europe.

The only problem with the Jeep is that it is very unreliable - a friend of mine has the most recent 4.7 model and its speedy, but hes had to pay out around $1500 of repairs already (that aren't included in the warranty) and hes had it for only a year.
They do look good though.
What about a td4 Land Rover Freelander?

American cars... they've gotten better....but the quality of a Jeep in the long run doesnt come close to the quality of a Toyota or a VW. Japanese and Germany cars are simply superior, unless you're doing offroading or hauling things around.

I say go with the new VW Golf. My sister got the new Jetta/Bora 2 months ago (not sure what its called in the UK) and its a wonderful car. If the Golf performs even remotely as well as the Jetta, you wont be disappointed.

That's the benefit of having it in England. The European Fords are MUCH, MUCH better than the ones here. I have a Focus here in New York and it leaks enough water when it rains to play with a toy boat on the floor in the passenger seat.

Only in the States, my friend, only in the States. My American Focus is terrible, and "Found on Road Dead" applies well. In Europe, however, they get better versions.

Sorry for saying basically the same thing twice, haha.

Stay away from Jeeps, German cars, and the Land Rovers. All have abysmal reliability ratings.

Go with the RAV or the Honda.

Mr. PR:

My statement about Land Rover Discovery reliability is not a personal opinion; it is based on ratings in Consumer Reports magazine, which takes no advertising and bases its reliability ratings on owner reports. The 2005 Land Rover Discovery received a solid black dot, the worst possible rating, for both the 2005 as used model and the 2006 as a new model. And it didn't fare very well in the performance review, either.

My wife was a BMW/VW warranty administrator at a huge BMW/VW/Honda dealership and they sold at least 10 Honda's for every BMW or VW sold. She was so overworked it was ridiculous and she quit. The Honda admin took long lunches and went home early because his workload was so light.

The new BMW 3-series was not good, but the VWs were pitiful. 1 in ten VWs needed an engine transplant or something as major within a year. BMW 5 and 7 series are much better, but still break way more than a typical Honda.

This was a real eye opener. Until then Jenny was dead set on a 3 Series and I was thinking about a VW Diesel.

Toyota is the benchmark for quality for most manufacturers.

Ford = Fix or repair daily
Ford = f%$#@@ up rebuilt Dodge
Ford reversed is = Driver returns on foot

Jeep = Just empty every pocket

Ahh the list goes on and on

Let me give you my .02 cents. I just moved from Detroit and fresh out of the auto cluster F@#$ industry. I learned my lesson years ago. In 1986 I bought a Chevy truck. In 1988 I purchased a Toyota Truck. The reason was by 1988 my 1986 Chevy was still in the shop for warranty repairs and yet out of warranty for 1 year, trust me this truck was a serious problem. Since this time frame I've owned a Saturn, Cadillac, Nissan, Honda. I'm sure in the US they can build a good car, but I do not have the financial resource to take a chance on a sure bet such as Honda. I still have in original running condition a 1986 1/2 Nissan Hard Body Pick Up. I'm willing to bet the Ford/Chevy version in 1986 are not on the road and my A/C works too! Drive Honda or Toyota and know you have done well.

I recently bought one of these in the 1.6i 16v hatchback version for a bit more than 18.000 euros (after a 3.000 deduction). Having driven already 5.000 km I am really satisfied with it. I also looked at the Ford Focus and the Renault Megane but I finally decided to get this one because it just looks better and it has a much better price, an interesting fixed deduction and a much more complete equipment than all the other cars.

I also bought this car because it has go so many nice gadgets: note the fixed-center steering wheel with the control-buttons in the middle; cruise-control and speed limiter, automatic lights and wipers, a rearview mirror which automatically darkens at night when there's a car behind you (so you don't get blinded by its headlights), dual-zone airconditioning, driver- and passenger airbag, front lateral airbags, window airbags, rearseat ceiling airbags, 17 inch wheels, a six speaker radio/cd player with a more than decent sound (although a JBL system is optional), airconditioned glove-compartment, 4 electric windows (which can be closed with the remote-control), etc.

The only downside, in your case, is that the boot doesn't meet your requirements. Although no specifications are known yet, it appears the boot in the C4 Picasso (to be launched in September) will be much bigger. Perhaps you might want to wait until then.

I'd pick the Toyota RAV4 ...

I've driven it recently for 2 days and I quite liked it - I drove the 2.2 D4D version and there is nothing that I disliked (the only point that bothered me was the center console where my knee managed to find a rest during driving). For whatever reason - my knees never hit anything in neither the Avensis, the Corolla or the Aygo .... it was funny to notice it happen in the RAV4.

That also means one can get a current-model stock Picasso at a very nice price once they launch the new one.

Considered the Altea? It has one ugly butt but I've had the chance to drive a couple of them and they have space for 101 dalmatians and a very smooth drive, not the sluggish minivan I expected.
