Why Are Terrorists Obsessed With Planes?

Mon Aug 14, 2006 1:19 am

Yes I know it sounds like a stupid question! I know it causes maximum disruption and loss of life but then again so would lots of other stuff. They could target trains, ships or major events which would cause just as much destruction! So are they just obsessed with planes?

I did ask this question in chat a few days ago actually, no one really could understand this either.

Why are they targetting an industry that is cracking down on the security measures, and industry that they've already tried to hurt for good with out succeeding. I'm sure it would be a whole lot easier of them to conduct suicide attacks on a ship, on shopping malls, on sporting arenas and other areas in the public.

Touch wood none of the above does actually happen, and touch wood that the extreme enforcment of extra security measures pays for itself in the long run and the world doesn't have to witness another event like 9/11.

True. Another way is to put a bomb inside of a suitcase and detonate it while standing in line to check bagage in. That would just be horrible. Sad Lets just hope that never happens.

Yeah I was wondering as well. It is much simpler to attack in a public space and avoid all the security associated with air travel. Even after the Madrid attacks, I still cannot see the added security in public spaces or underground train systems that would stop terrorists from blowing themselves up.

I appreciate that. And although that and the Madrid bombings were terrible events you still don't hear that there were 30/40 terrorist attempts on trains whereas we are being told there have been 30/40 attempts on aircraft! You would think that with the levels of security at airports that the terrorists would just give up and try somewhere else where security is less. It just seems like they are obsessed with planes!  Confused

Maximum devastation and news coverage... BECAUSE the security is so tight. they're making a mockery of it...

They can also kill hundreds in just a single hit... you cant do that with a train unless its a packed train and you explode multiple packages...

It's more internationally damaging and flying is such a delicate subject to many people, although it's a great success many people still feel odd about flying they may not necessarily have a fear of flying but always have that "what if" scenario in their heads. If a plane crash happens it's all over the news and the press always say "is flying safe now?" even though we all know it is safe it still spreads fear and terrorists just exploit that.

Air travel represents the freedom and ability to travel around the world, and airplanes represent that freedom.

Two reasons. First is that it's much easier to hit a country via an asset that flies around the world at 600MPH. It comes to you, you don't have to go to it. Second, there is nothing more terrifying to some people than the thought of falling from the sky in a flaming freefall from 35,000 feet.

I think its the fact that it makes them feel invincable, the fact that they can get past the security and onto the plane. (right up untill it blows then there no longer invincable)
it makes them feel smart.

They're not obsessed with planes. Since 9/11 is the public that has been obsessed with planes. Look at the Madrid and London train bombings. Yet go to any train station and it's back to business as usual. But when they find out about a potential plot against airplanes everybody shits their pants and even more ridiculous "security" measures are introduced.

Terrorists have always been obsessed with planes.

The PLO, North Korean groups, the Sikh separatists, etc., have all blown up airliners.

And it's easy to see why.

1. For many people the terrorists are primarily trying to impress, airplanes are symbols of power and wealth. Knocking off an jetliner shows the power these people have over a symbol of power.

2. A big bang for your buck. A tiny amount of semtex can bring down a 747 at 30,000 feet (the PanAm and Air India 747s). That's 350 people for something no larger than a small soap bar.

3. As Aerowesty put it, there is this horrible fear factor. What could be worse than having a fuel laden metal tube flying at 600 mph explode throwing your mangled, burned body to the ground at terminal velocity? There is an absolute horror in that image that is hard to capture because there have never been any survivors to describe it.

Think about it. If a bomb went off in a train or a ship, you still think that you could be spared the immediate horror, and could possible escape. A bomb ripping through the fuselage of an airplane means certain death for all on board.

It plays on fears that people have of flying and dying in a plane crash. There are SO many people out there that have fears of flying and what more of a twisted way to die than hurling yourself at 600MPH through flames and explosions at 35,000 ft.

Passenger aircraft have been used by or have been targets of various terrorist groups for terror acts for almost 40 years. That it can take as little as 1 person and there are many ways to get control of or place a bomb on an typical passenger aircraft makes it easy to such acts and get attention for their twisted causes. Aircraft are very vulnerable to attacks so it doesn't take much to do a terror act on one, unlike trying to go to war with an army of a country. The idea of getting worldwide TV and other media attention for their often twisted 'cause' with aircraft attacks and the relative ease to use aircraft in terror acts are probably the best explanations as to why the 'obsession' to do terror acts involving passenger airliners.
