Calling All Mechanics.......(my Car Broke)

Mon Aug 14, 2006 5:23 pm

It appears I have a few problems with my car......

Yesterday while down in Preston I turned the engine on, and the airbag warning light came on, and has remained on ever since. No major deal, I dont plan on crashing anyway so the airbag is not required Big grin

However today things have got slightly worse. I turned the engine on and again the airbag warning light was on. Same as yesterday. However as soon as I exceeded 18mph all the dials on the dashboard died..... Speed, temperature, fuel and RPM all dropped to zero. I continued to drive to work, and every time I hit the breaks and slowed below 18mph they all came back on again.... only to die once I accelerated above 18mph......

So...... any A.net mechanics know whats wrong?

Daz, you fancy coming up to Scotland to tinker with it? Big grin

What kind of car is it? What year? How many miles? From what you say, it sounds like it could be an electrical problem.

Don't worry too much about the airbag warning light. The light comes on to tell you the system has been de-activated due to a fault, so it won't go off in your face.

Chances are you have a knackered relay - don't worry about it!  Wink

Do other electrics (such as your radio) work when you go above 18 mph? If they do not work, then, without any more information, my tired mind is going to guess that the voltage regulator on your alternator is kaput.

But a shop tech can diagnose your problem better than a.netters several thousand miles away.

All other electronics work fine, even the clock on the dashboard. Only thing that doesnt work is the speed/rpm/fuel etc instruments...

Check the fuses and relais connected to the dashboard and the gauges.

Now that is weird. Ordinarily I'd suggest having the alternator checked out but since speed has something to do with this, I don't know what to tell you.
Thanks to those Germans for there 'sophisticated' engineering. Had you bought a more reliable Ford, I'd be able to tell you what the problem was here in the forums.

To add to his list of problems, I've noticed his car makes a large clunking noise when he changes gears.

A small update:

This morning on the way to work it was being very consistant, dying/resuming at 17-18mph without exception.

However i took the car for a spin at lunchtime, on the way into town it was sometimes dying instantly, sometimes at 35mph. On the way back it died once, then recovered and worked fine for the remainer of the trip back to work.

So it may not be speed related...

Umm, a friend with a VW Golf used to have hers cut out going around islands and sharp bends, then pick up again. Can't remember what the problem was, but fuel pump relay comes to mind, and other comments do point to an electrical fault. She did eventually resolve the problem after numerous trips back to VW - she sold it and bought a Rav4 instead.

Well I'll add my issue too.

I have a 1998 Peugeot, piece of French crap, 206, 1.4 LX. Just had a Peugeot engineer out to address a safety recall with the brakes, alas now I just found out one of the brake lights doesn't work! Retard.

Secondly, coming down the M61 the other day some gear linkage seperated and whilst the piece of shit car will stay in gear, the gear stick flops around like, well, use your imagination. How much does that cost to get fixed, I'm waiting for Peugeot man to give me a quote still....

Oh and as it goes, I'm sitting in the car at the moment. It smells funny.

Hey Nighthawk,
From the symptoms you described, I would venture to guess that you probably have a sensor that has gone bad. my guess would be one of the deceleration sensors for the airbag. That would explain the airbag warning. since all these sensors are integrated into the EMC, then I could see where these weird things could happen.

I could possibly be more than one thing. Might be in the wheel sensor for the anti-lock brakes (if so equipped).

Just take your car to a mechanic, and they will plug it in an get any error codes.

Good Luck.

If you had automatic, you wouldnt have this problem!  Silly

Doubt its ABS. ABS with this could be due to a speed sensor. However there is more than one (around the brake assembly) so unless both of them are broken...

To quote NASCAR:

Definitely electrical/computer, especially if when the dash cuts out there are no other problems.

Shouldn't be anything a visit to the dealer can't fix.... with electrical I wouldn't leave it though, because you don't want to take any chance of a short or bad connection leading to a fire (which has happened to cars I was riding in on two separate occasions, one of which I had to actually extinguish said fire!  flamed  )

Three of my buddies drives Volkwagen here in the U.S. and all three has similar problems. Maybe it's a VW thing.

If it's the sensors, is your check engine light on?

You'll probably have better answers in a VW auto forum then airliners.net.  Smile

Hope you solve your car problem.

I have never heard of such a VW product, but from what I know about modern VWs in the US market they are problematic with electrical concerns. You may have some sort of short in the module that operated the cluster. A couple of years ago I had Chrysler cluster go out. When I removed it from the dash I found a melted circuit board. After lengthy diagnosis I found that the module controlling the cluster failed, which shorted the cluster. So the car needed two parts, the module and the cluster. It cost about $300 for the parts. When that module failed everything else on the dash continued to work, like the radio and climate controls.

On some GM cars from the mid 1990s, the ABS and brake warning lamp will come on when the alternator fails.

I am an ASE Master technician, but I usually only work on American cars, that is only because there are more US cars in Detroit than any other. I have a Dodge, a Honda, and a Mercedes-Benz, a true internationalist. About the only non US cars I work on are mine. So my theory is just a educated guess, but it should give you somewhere to look.

I can't say that I have. I saw a new Peugeot a few weeks ago in Dearborn, Michigan. It was black. The model was 909 or something like that. It had manufacturers plates on it. I was amazed to see a new Peugeot on the street in the Detroit area, or anywhere in the USA.

I have a forklift with a Peugeot engine and it is a turd. There is always a problem with the ignition and charging systems. I just was wrenching on it today!
