My Boss Is The Worst Boss Of All Times (Rant)

Tue Aug 15, 2006 2:01 am

I thought that now that I moved from front line customer support to translations, things would look better for me, but I was wrong. I was totally wrong.

Today I fully realised that my new boss is the worst of any boss I've had in my three years at the callcentre. Not only does she have a tendency of becoming childish when I say no regarding things that have to do with my own free time, but she also is a liar (she promissed that I would get a shift from 1 pm to 10 pm, which would have been perfect, but during the interview for the position, they changed their position, more on that later) totally unorganised. Here's what had me lose it today:

She sent me a mail, where she said I should translate something. I happen to have that thing translated from a previous correction, so I send it to her. However, she replies and tells me the QT has been changed. Why the hell didn't she tell me that in her previous e-mail? She could have at least instructed us to use our internal database for comparison, to see if there were any changes, yet not even that. I like to have my work fully organised. If something gets in between, I get a bit upset, because it screws my work organisation. But today, this really took the cake. I want to have a different assignment now, to get the hell away from her, however this could imply an internal downgrade, which is unacceptable for me, because in other promotion offers, I have been rejected and instead, others were chosen who don't have as much knowledge or understanding of issues like I do. As for evaluating new job offers at another place, either I don't have time, or it's a job at Hewlett Packard, where I could risk working in a call centre position again, or other jobs don't appeal to me at all.

Regarding the broken promise of the shift, they justified it with the fact that I should be ready for the case I have to attend a conference call with my boss. But one and a half months later, I don't get called to one of these things. I could ask them if they could change my shift, but I know they will say no because they'll come up with the excuse that there aren't any special circumstances which require me to work a different shift (most of all College, and I don't go to College here but rather wait until I can attend a Uni in Germany). As some of you know, I prefer to work at night. It's much more relaxed, it's not as stressed as during the day, and I have enough time to go eat before work and go to the bank to pay my credit card.

All the freedoms I used to have, were taken away from me. I hate my boss, now more than ever. I thought, from knowing her previously, that she would make a fine boss, but appearances are indeed deceiving. In fact, if she was my girlfriend, I would have dumped her for being so unorganised, childish and lacking some character.

Worse than the strawboss my older brother worked for in the sawmill? This guy threatened to kill them if they didn't work harder. You'll have to offer something worse than above.

Management 101

Lesson One

An eagle was sitting on a tree resting, doing nothing.
A small rabbit saw the eagle and asked him, "Can I also sit on my
ass like you and do nothing?"
The eagle answered: "Sure, why not."
So, the rabbit sat on the ground below the eagle, and rested.
All of a sudden, a fox appeared, jumped on the rabbit and ate it.

Management Lesson:
To be sitting on your ass and doing nothing, you must be sitting
very high up.

Lesson Two

A turkey was chatting with a bull. "I would love to be able to get
to the top of that tree," sighed the turkey, "but I haven't got
the
energy."
"Well, why don't you nibble on some of my manure droppings?"

replied the bull. "They're packed with nutrients."
The turkey pecked at a lump of manure, found it actually gave him
enough strength to reach the lowest branch of the tree.
The next day, after eating some more dung, he reached the second
branch.
Finally after a fourth night, he was proudly perched at the top of the tree.

Soon he was promptly spotted by a farmer, who shot the turkey out of the tree.

Management Lesson:
Bullshit might get you to the top, but it won't keep you there.

Lesson Three

A little bird was flying south for the winter. It was so cold the
bird froze and fell to the ground in a large field. While it was
lying there, a cow came by and dropped some dung on it. As
the frozen bird lay there in the pile of cow dung, it began to
realize how warm it was. The dung was actually thawing him
out. He lay there all warm and happy, and soon began to sing
for joy. A passing cat heard the bird singing and came to
investigate. Following the sound, the cat discovered the bird
under the pile of cow dung, and promptly dug him out and ate him.

Management Lessons:

(1) Not every one who shits on you is your enemy, it just happens.
(2) Not everyone who gets you out of shit is your friend.
(3) And when you're in deep shit, it's best to keep your mouth
shut.
This ends your two-minute management course - now get back to
w...!

First of all, I am not a chauvinist, but if you ask women who are good at their job and easy to work with who THEY hate to work with, the answer will usually be...other women.

I dont know if it is a problem with some woman to work in an environment created by men for men, or if it is that many woman cannot find an acceptable work ethic, but many women elevated to management positions based on their prior work clearly have problems managing men.

My advice is get your resume in order and get out of that situation. The only other choice is to hate going to work and taking it out on the ones you love because you cant take it out on your inept boss.

So... is she the president/CEO of the company you work for...? You said you were employed in a call center so I would believe that she is just a middle management figure...

In my experience in call centers, lots of middle management are total idiots and haven't a clue on how to properly manage staff and/or operations.

Take your concerns up the ladder to her superior and complain. Do you have an HR department? If so, another place to share your concerns.

If she is the big boss up top and no one else is around to escalate the matter to, then definitely seek a new job elsewhere.

Good grief...I've worked for worse people than that. The company didn't keep a promise? So what. She didn't communicate something well in her email? Big deal. Welcome to the world of business.

I imagine she probably has something to say about you as a 'high maintenance' type of employee.

So, as RAPCON so eloquently put...

Actually I don't have a problem with women being my superiors. My very first boss here was a woman and she did her job pretty well. After that, it was men until this July.

Quoting A332 (Reply 8):
So... is she the president/CEO of the company you work for...?

No, she's my team lead, or the manager of the group I work in.

Quoting IFEMaster (Reply 9):
The company didn't keep a promise?

Not the company, only she and her predecessor. It was a personal promise they did, and I resent that they broke my trust so much.

Quoting IFEMaster (Reply 9):
She didn't communicate something well in her email? Big deal.

Well, it's a call centre, so I'd expect that communication between the boss and the agents is as clear as possible, albeit short. In this company, many problems have surged from lack of communication. In previous years though, it was worse. Sometimes I would be asked to translate something, and that translation became available to everyone else after sometimes up to 6 weeks after I finished it. The procedures were already in place, but then quality agents would give agents bad marks for not using a script, which they didn't know already existed. Besides, this entire place is unorganised. While other competing call centres, like the other major ones in San Salvador or in Manila, do things more orderly, here it's sometimes total chaos. And the customer of the call centre has complained a lot about it.

Quoting IFEMaster (Reply 9):
I imagine she probably has something to say about you as a 'high maintenance' type of employee.

Actually my anger management inside the building is a bit better than it was in October of last year, but once I noticed what I mentioned regarding her second e-mail, I went out, had a smoke and almost yelled in anger. I do have a bit of a tendency of not going fully by the book, but I have received little complaints about my way of getting the job done.

Quoting A332 (Reply 8):
In my experience in call centers, lots of middle management are total idiots and haven't a clue on how to properly manage staff and/or operations.

Very true. She's the second of two team leads I had whom I consider completely incompetent at times. With the other, who was a guy, the entire team also bad communication. He went away for a month, and about two weeks after he returned, he told us why he left (it was a back surgery). During that month, one guy was harrassing a co-worker, we all had a chat with a supervisor and the account manager, and while the guy, who couldn't even speak his native German well, continued to make senseless points, the sup and the CSM decided to give him a second chance, despite the very harsh harrassment of his against that co-worker.

It's curious, when it comes to failing metrics, they don't hesitate that much to warn or suspend someone, but when it comes to people who are extremely rude and abusive to another person despite repeated warnings, like the guy who harrassed a co-worker, and who not only fails in his metrics but also makes up stuff to ruin your work (e.g. once he wrote in a support e-mail this: "Please Excuse the response by Agent X. Obviously you were right, etc." He was clearly addressing me and undermining my work and making me look bad in front of a customer), they hesitate to apply their much boasted code of discipline and fire these people.

Quoting A332 (Reply 8):
Do you have an HR department? If so, another place to share your concerns.

Doubtful. HR would dismiss my case just as quickly as I make it, mostly because either those at HR are total idiots, like the middle management people you mention, or because they're very close friends with my boss.

Pardon my question, but why didn't you do it by yourself? If I'd rely entirely on what my clients forward to me, you'd see English websites with a navigation bar in German language and could listen to Free Jazz on a website aiming at students in the 16 - 20 age bracket, while one press kit would feature a review stressing that the stage play needs no public sponsoring, whereas the reason for the press kit was to apply for public sponsoring.

I don't wish to sound like a smartass, but those things you mentioned simply happen, and being proactive pays off.

Two suggestions, if you don't mind: Always keep in mind that your boss doesn't need to be your friend. You don't want to go on a sailboat trip with her, nor does she expect a christmas card. You only need to work with her, and you don't see her too often, do you (a friend of mine shared her office with her boss who truly was difficult to bear).
Second: Maybe write down some kind suggestions (not "must-haves", ok) on how to improve work flow.

Here's what you do...

Get a can of tuna, and punch two holes in it. Drain the water out, and duct-tape it under her desk or in a place that is not easily found. Give it a week, and she'll go crazy. If you can, move the can around in the morning be fore she gets in. This way, she would have searched her whole office and not found the stink.

Another idea...

Go to a herbal remedies store, or pharmacy and buy some caplets of vulerian root (I know I spelled that wrong). Take one caplet, and break it open. Empty the contents into the the mouth piece of her phone, clean the mess. Sprinkle some more on the carpet. That smell will keep her and house keeping busy.

Dealing with a boss that is full of it...

I had one of those, who used to lie so bad that after a while it was difficult to tell the difference. So, I bought a PDA with a good mic in it. While I sat in meetings, pretending to take notes, or use my calendar, I recorded the whole session. Later, I would sync to my PC and make mp3s out of the sessions. That process gave me the ammo to call him on about 85% of his BS.

My Boss Is The Worst Boss Of All Times

That is a matter of opinion. Be glad that it is only affecting your time at work and not your privat life.

I had a hell of a bitch as a boss when I made my civil service in a hospital, she was always nice and friendly until I had a little dispute with her. She reported me at the "Bundesamt für Zivildienst" because I wasn't at work for two days a month before we had this dispute (despite she said at first that it is ok and forgotten) and she told them additionally that I refused to do my work (which was simply not true, I only refused to run twice a day to the kiosk on the other side of the street to buy her smokes). I didn't know that she reported me until I got a letter in which I could read everything, attached to this letter was a disciplinary hearing sheet, I was so angry and despite writing down my story of the situation I simply wrote something like "Fickt Euch" on it.

Another two weeks later I was asked to come to the human resources department where I got a letter, I took it, went away and read it in the lift on the way back to the ground floor. I could read that some fucktards decided that I have to serve a three day arrest over the Pentecost weekend just because my boss told them some shit about me. Super, a long summer weekend, all my friends had planned to party and I could spent it in a 10sqm room which had nothing in it but a bed, a desk and a chair. I was allowed to leave it three times a day for 30 minutes to have breakfast, lunch, and dinner, it was strictly checked and I was told on the first day that I should not even think about making 35 minutes out of the 30 minutes.

When I came back to work on the Tuesday after my arrest I was asked by my boss if I enjoyed the long weekend. At this point I was very, very close to punch her in the face, I didn't, instead I turned around, begun to smile and said: "Thanks, it was relaxing".

Thankfully I was displaced from the accounting department to the emergency room some days later where I really enjoyed the remaining months of my civil service.

Ah, idiot bosses. The one I had at my previous job (coincidentally, working translations) used to hold up my payment until I reached the productivity goal for that month, which he had changed at least five times during the month. I was so tired of his BS, that I was eagerly awaiting the day the contract would finish, despite needing the money. I started wondering whether there was something wrong with me, until I found out nearly everyone in the office disliked him. Alas, there was nothing we could do -- he was the company owner's son.

Besides money, the only things that kept me going those 5 months were my great coworkers and the kick-ass view of the airport from my office.

The account I'm in works this way: do things, ask questions later. We used to have all access to Excel and Word for writing things, but regular agents are now starting to get Office (except for Outlook) removed. We're pretty much the nightmare of any customer: we are like automatic responders, and this also affects us translators and L2s to some extent.

I had to make up an excuse to not go there. Ironically, the farewell shindig got cancelled.

Actually I'm now trying to decide when it's time to talk to her about my problems directly. One thing on the agenda will be a change of shift, to have more time to do certain things, like shopping, getting lunch at a local diner (I don't eat at work at all), and go to the bank to pay off my credit card. I just hope that during that conversation, I don't lose my temper, like I always tend to.

Damn, that story scared me a bit, Patrick. I hope I don't get a bitch like that when I'm back in Germany and have to do my time in Zivi.  scared

When talking to her superior (or the HR dept), however, be very cautious with what you say; she might end up taking it against you...

Tell me about it. I've had plenty of experiences with people finding out I complained about them and them resenting it.

This girl is my fifth boss in 3 years. Me and other fellow coworkers get constantly reshuffled as part of my account's "organisational structure". Once you get along with one boss, you get transfered and get another, who might be a rotten apple, like the one I have now.

Actually a few weeks back, she was planning a farewell party for her predecessor, who got transferred to another account. When I told her that on that day I couldn't make it, she started moaning and whining like a 6 year old brat, asking why and eventually convincing me to think about it. I had to make up an excuse to not go there. Ironically, the farewell shindig got cancelled.

That's because she wants you (please see my #3 above). She wanted to you to to the party, get you drunk, and then take you home to do the horizontal mambo all weekend long!!!

YEAH BABY!!!

This sort of thing happens all the time, everywhere. To quote my mother, after a similar situation I haad "whoever promised you a rose garden?"

Just suck it up and do your job to your best ability.....and give over 100%. Upper-level management will eventually notice.

However....looking at these quotes from your posts....I'm not surprised you have trouble with your boss. You tend to lose your temper, go behind co-worker's backs and don't follow rules. I say consider yourself bloody lucky you're employed.

I don't lose my temper, like I always tend to.

Damn, that story scared me a bit, Patrick.

It was pretty scary when I read the letter, I took a quick look onto the blah, blah, blah until I read a sentence like: "...please show up to serve your arrest at XX.XX.19XX at 18:00h at the following location...". I stopped reading immediately, hid the address with my hand and said to myself: "Please, please not, please".... I had luck, I could serve the three days in one of the Zivi apartments in the hospital and not in a jail, so I decided not to protest against the decision. It was actually ok, the girls who had to keep an eye on me were pretty nice, they always brough me newspapers, something to drink, etc.

I wouldn't say I don't follow the rules. I rather prefer to think a bit more outside the box.  Wink

The complaint parts mostly come from the times at school, where I've had major problems with bullies, especially in 10th grade. Besides, this is only the second boss I'm having trouble with. I didn't have any major problems with others. If I do complain at work, it's more of an eye for an eye, tooth for tooth mentality, because lots of people have complained about me behind my back, and some of that was almost only for the purpose of either to intimidate or just insult me.

As for my temper, I guess I inherited it from my father. But should I lose it, I try to go outside, it's not like I totally lose it on the floor (this has only happened once). Actually I got lots of that under control, it used to be even worse. I know I'm not perfect, nobody is, but I haven't had it easy all these years, neither at school nor at work.

Actually I do. I didn't think some people actually don't mind me being a bit outside the box.
