The Local Mosque Set On Fire

Tue Aug 15, 2006 2:05 am

Well it seems that the mosque here in Basingstoke has been deliberately set on fire. I must admit that despite having lived here since 1983, it's the first time I knew there was a mosque here.
The police are treating it as a racially motivated attack.
Now there's a surprise

So the police already know the race of the criminals involved?

Wouldn't it be a religiously motivated attack?

Its because many muslims have been silent on all these recent developments and have not condemmed itstrongly. People are unsure of where they stand on this issue.........

For an attack to be racially motived, the race of the attacker doesn't matter. An attack is racially motived if the race of the person attacked is part of the reason they're attacked.

There have been other similar attacks here. It's obviously something to do with the recent airport events.

Bad news for African Americans who so enjoy hurling the N-grenade at each other. Tell me, will prosecuting them be racially motivated?

Probably so, just as some Mosques were set on fire after 9/11

However. A racially motivated attack is one where someone is attacked because of their race. A religiously motivated attack is one where someone is attack because of their religion. I assume the mosque was attacked because of, well... Islam. A religion, not a race.

Why does everytime a mosque get the treatment, do we have to bring up race or religion? Isn't that profiling? It could've been an arsonist, right?

More than likely it was a free expressive act by an oppressed youth protesting his displeasure at the foreign policies of Muslim nations towards Christian proselytization. Will somebody please think of the youth????

I would have thought you'd realise the importance of context. There's a difference between using a word, that isn't even considered an insult any more when used in the right context, and torching down a religious building.

More than likely it was a bunch of youths with their bravado enhanced by a few cans of strong cider.

LOL! That's exactly the defence given by many people around the world (and some on this forum) for people who have burned offices and cars at the (fill in the blank here.......). The G8, Danish cartoons, anti US demonstrations, all sorts of things.

But in this case it was not a race that was attacked but rather a religion so it can't be a racially motivated attack...unless of course folks are going to now say being Muslim is a race.

That I will agree with but for folks to just start calling it a racial attack willy nilly is wrong. Treat it for what it is right now...a possible arson. If anything else comes out of the investigation then so be it. But we can't just say that every Mosque that burns is because of anti-Muslim folks just as much as we can't say that every Black church that burns in the USA is something done by the Klan or other racist organization.

and even if, does this "being unsure" give those hooligans the right to set fire to a mosque ?

Your darn tootin' it is racially and religiously motivated. I live near "Dearbornistan" better known as Dearborn, Michigan. Most people I talk to don't know the difference between a Arab and a Muslim and they don't care to know. To the average Detroiter they are one in the same. If you talk to Arabs around here it is best never to get a Christian Arab confused with a Muslim. I have found most Christian Arabs (that I have dealt with) don't have a high opinion of Muslim Arabs.

Authorities are quick to jump on anything that looks racially motivated, as do the media, it sells newspapers and looks good on TV. If it is a white or black fundamentalist Christian the media can't help to bash them. But when Muslims burn a christian or Jewish house of worship that is ok? That doesn't seem to be too big of an issue in the US, but I have read that in other parts of the world it happens. It seems that many in the US media want to give Muslims a free pass to do what ever they want as far as religion goes, but Jews and Christians always get the bashed as being insensitive.
