Mt Soledad Cross

Tue Aug 15, 2006 6:42 am

Ok, now that the Christian right has supposedly one this battle, how many think it was worth the millions spent to save an ugly cinder block cross rather than if we spent the money to build a true war memorial?

Think how great the memorial would have been without the obvious religious tone it holds and if a proper memorial was designed.

Think how this is the third thread on this subject in 6 months and you could get the answers to . . .

. . . and this . . . .

. . . by doing a little search and rereading the other threads and saving us all the headache of retaking old terrain.

Yea, it may be, but it's a great visual aid for us VFR pilots here in the So-Cali area. I say keep it up just for that reason.

Well, I guess that someone needs to do some more factchecking prior to posting....

also...most war memorials contain significant religious symbolism. Most veterans care about that, and the memorials are to honor the fallen. That's why you'll see crosses and other religious symbology on the markers for the dead.

Think you much better your life would be if you would stop beating dead horses and leave the memorials to the veterans.

One, the thread listed above are archived.

Two, this is new as since the previous post this has passed its way through congress and President Bush has signed for transfer

Three, Everyone made the assumption it was built as a war memorial. The link above states otherwise. It became a war memorial 17 yrs ago as away to defeat litigation.

Four, It is still an ugly structure. If this was the Statue of Christ, a beautiful structure, I would not have a big deal with it. Still have an issue, but could be swayed.

Five,

This is probably the best argument I have yet to read.

Six, Looked at most war memorials in D.C., and did not see a large religious symbol on most if not all of them.

Seven, If you dont like this thread....move on. Otherwise discuss how this made it all the way to the President or some enlightenment to the topic at hand.

Eight, when will NW retire the MD....

The main question I have is, now that this is being transferred is it possible to build a very nice, beautiful structure in its place or is it now locked in from alteration?

No we didn't.

It is a war memorial. As in.. Now. I don't care what it was when it started life.

Quoting RichPhitzwell (Reply 7):
Four, It is still an ugly structure.

Then it is perfect for soldiers.

And are less than three months old, and easily accessible with a SHORT search, as I demonstrated.

INcorrect. I guess you didn't read the links provided did you. Or you'd know better.

I guess you should GO to the Memorials in DC . . . where'll you see crosses and the word GOD all over them . . .

There is that option . . .

No idea . . . I think it's fine the way it is . . . I have no particularly affinity for the cross . . . in whatever form, but I don't see it necessary to change it for the sake of change.
