All-New BMW X5 Photos Released

Wed Aug 16, 2006 1:08 am

http://www.bmwusa.com/vehicles/futurevehicles/newx5/default.htm

BMW has made a press release for its all-new BMW X5. I think they really did a good job on making the car look good. It looks clean and I dont think the design is too controversial...(although the only design that I thought WAS controversial was the Z4, IMHO...). I'm sure it will be a hoot to drive, we used to have an X5 4.4i, and the engine, transmission and suspension were just fantastic. For being as heavy as it was, the car really performed amazingly. I loved that car. Anyway, here are some pics.

Unimpressed. Looks kind of like a Cayenne or Toureg. I'm sure I'll be even more unimpressed when it breaks down 100 feet off the road though it will do just fine on city streets.

That looks absolutely stunning! I can't wait for the X5 M. It will have the same 500hp V10 as the M5 and M6. I wonder why the 4.8 V8 puts out 10 less hp and 10 less lb-ft of torque than in the 550i, 650i, and 750i?

Just another SUV with BMW kidneys. BTW, this is not a total knock...I'm entirely sure that it will be a capable vehicle as per design intent, but I've been asleep on the "SUV scene" for about a decade now. Ho-hum. Regards...jack

This is the first one of the new BMW designs that look good IMO.
I really like the X5 so I am happy they didn't mess it up.

iDrive is really not that bad. It takes some practice, but eventually it can be used very efficiently.... its really nice to use for the radio, it makes changing stations a snap....you just twist a knob that is really comfortably located. Once bluetooth is set up, making phone calls is easy as the phones automatically synch with the cars' audio system- and your phone book is loaded into the cars' computer. Navigation is a little tricky, but I never use nav anyways so it doesnt matter, and I havent obviously gotten a change to play around with it much.

BMW only does a facelift once per model generation, so this is all new. When I saw the title of this thread, I was bracing for the worst, fearing another BMW design nightmare at the hands of "Bangle the Terrible". I was really taken aback when I saw the picture, as I think this new model looks really good!

My thoughts on this is at first glance, wow absolutley gorgeous.  Smile

Then I start looking at how dumbly placed the i-Drive knob is! It almost looks as if it's parallel with the freaking stick! I'm a total BMW nut, I love them terribly much and this one melts my heart overall.

They are both very pretty looking cars, but I'd be a bit troubled to call my favourite out of the two!!

Well done BMW!

And you doubt that why? Mercedes has the ML63 AMG so it would make perfect sense in the never ending Mercedes-BMW power race. The below piece is directly from vehix.com

A redesigned X5 is due in late 2006 or early '07. Gossips have been all over the map on specifics, but most expect a somewhat larger SUV with smoother, cautiously evolutionary styling--and no 3-row seating, at least for now. One report has the smaller X3 donating some suspension components, but powertrains should come from 5-Series cars. That likely means a base 3.0-liter inline-6 with around 260 hp and a 360-hp 4.8-liter V8. However, a 4.0 V8 with around 300 horses is also possible, and BMW hints at a first-time U.S. diesel X5 with either a largish six or a smallish V8. There's also talk of a hot X5 M with a 500-hp V10 to take on Mercedes' new high-performance ML63. All engines should mate to a 6-speed automatic transmission and the next evolution of BMW's xDrive AWD. A new 7-speed dual-clutch version of BMW's computer-controlled SMG sequential manual transmission is an outside prospect. Other rumors say an electronic parking brake and column-mount shifter will be among new standard features. Height-adjustable suspension and BMW's Active Roll Stabilization should be available, perhaps standard on V8s. Another rumored option is BMW's controversial electronically-controlled Active Steering.

Mercedes has had the ML AMG for years, but BMW has stuck with it's 4.6is and 4.8is models only. Mercedes has AMG models for nearly every model in it's range, while BMW is more selective with how it uses it's performance division. BMW's M-division is more of a serious driving machine then AMG, but like I said I just have my serious doubts.

Sure it might look somewhat like an X3 on sterroids ... Is that such a bad thing?
I think it looks great!

This new look is the first good idea to come from the "company of ideas" since they came up with the new (and by "new" I mean "rediculous") slogan.

Although correct, if you look, the two models have always been comprable. The 2003 ML55 AMG had a 342hp V8 while the 2003 X5 4.6is came with a 340hp V8. Now that Mercedes has dropped a massive 510hp V8 into the new ML63 AMG, history would tell us to expect something similar from BMW. Being so, it would only make sense that BMW would use their 500hp V-10 and label it the X5 M.

Just my 2 cents.

R class is based on a truck at least that's what I heard as the X5 is based on a car. The X5 is just a car that sits high off the ground.

Even though I hate the X5 I must say it looks alot better! Looks alot more sporty than truck this time which is right since an X5 is in no way a real SUV. BMW did a great job, but I still dont like the car, but now it looks more car than truck I might begin to respect it. The thing I hate is when people I know who drive X5 say yea they can go off road or think my SUV is just as bad as thier or worse just because it says VW. But that happens whith anyone who does not know much about cars.
Anyway back to the point, a M X5 would be awesome, but nothing can compete with the Cayenne Turbo S.

Yea same thing for my car the V8 Touareg. It uses the same 4.2l V8 the A8 uses but the A8 is rated at 330hp while the Touareg is rated at 310hp. I not sure why though? I am sure someone could explain that one because I wished I had the extra 20hp.

I have my doubts on that statement. The M5 is a great car and the E55 is almost just as good but it stops there. I much rather have an CLK55 or 63, SL55, SL65 than an M3 or even an M6. But thats just my opinion. But AMG is a serious driving machine.

n meLooks better than any of the new line BMW's. The X3 is horrible in my opinion. Looks like BMW got their design from the RAV4. The new 3 and 5 are starting to grow on me, but the new 3-series Ci (Coupe) is going to look fantastic! That will be my next purchase in a few years, unless I come into a situation where I can afford a 6-series, but that may be a while.

The fact that they don't offer manual transmissions in most, if not all AMG models makes me think twice of considering them 'serious driving machines' Take the G55 for example. Sure it's cool looking and a good off road, but sorta dilutes the purpose of AMG. Btw, the E55 has been replaced by the E63 AMG.

469 hp 516 lb-ft 0-60 mph in 5.3 seconds. for the G55, sure not a Cayenne Turbo S or Jeep SRT8 but still very nice and it is heavier than the Cayenne and SRT8. Also your point of no manual transmissions well it is starting to go out of style as DSG and Triptronic are much more popular, Nascars dont have a true manual transmissions neither do F1 cars, are they not serious driving machines also?

That doesn't mean a company serious about driving shouldn't at least OFFER it. It's all about driver involvement, something a automatic transmission cannot replicate, period.

F1 and Nascar are all about all out speed, and those transmissions can shift much faster then a human can. If you want one of these BMW offers the SMG transmission, Mercedes doesn't even have it available. BMW shows in it's sporting nature by having the manual transmission standard in all but the 7-series.

Although I agree BMW has the edge in that it at least offers manual, (and soon will on the M5) I believe it is rather interesting that Mercedes is able to tune their automatics to out run most comparable manuals, namely BMW's.
