No Sales Tax,Por Favor!

Thu Aug 17, 2006 10:48 am

It's time to vent one:
As a retailer, there seems to be an alarming new trend
that's been going around in the last three months.
More and more, were being addressed by consumers,
mostly Hispanic, that will not pay sales tax on taxable
product. For example,we lost two sales today amounting
to $200.00 and this seems to happening on a daily basis.

Now,no doubt, there are a lot of bad retailers who have
not charged tax in the past and falsified sales revenue,
like in downtown LA,but it was never this bad where
customers absolutely refused to pay tax.I almost feel
this thing is political.I actually have challenged those
customers and reminded them we pay for "public
services" or "where did you get the idea you don't
pay taxes".

They claim that California (and several other states) is part of Mexico and therefore US taxes there are illegal.
Speak up against it and you're branded a racist if you're lucky and seriously beaten up if you're not.

They're of course just thugs.

I don't think you lost a sale. They just did not want to pay the price for the item they were buying. Is it possible this is some kind of negotaiting game?

Frankly, I would just tell them "we are required by the state to charge sales tax if you do not wish to pay it there is nothing I can do for you. Goodbye." And then move on the next customer.

Of course, the other option is to mark down the price of the item by the amount of the tax so when the tax is applied the price rises to the number of the price tag. I would not engage in the whole "We all pay for public services" line. That just goes somewhere you don't want to in front a potential customer.

At the end of the day, you cannot break the law for a sale.

I never use such a statement unless the customer is heading for the door.

That method has been used very frequent.Or I use," I'm no different from a
Wal-Mart or any other retailer" and they still walk.Unfortnatly, they probably have plenty
of small time retailers who don't charge tax and adjust sales to taxes
in reporting it to the State Board Of Equalization.(CAL)

I don't think so.They bluntly don't want to pay taxes.That's why I beginning
to think its a political trend.

While I agree they have to pay taxes if they want to buy anything, I don't think you have to be impolite at any time...

I have not heard of this trend. The collection of taxes has helped create and fund public investment thus leading to a stable economic environment that allows for a middle class that many places on the planet will never see. That's how we have water, streets, fire, police and other public service that exist continuously throughout the country. The countries these people come from don't have that level of stuff and yet fail to understand how we magically have all of this. There is a cost associated with this. In Oregon there isn't a "sales tax" but they too have methods to fund for the general welfare of the public. These low life POS need to clearly understand how the process works here. I don't want their corrupt form of government and lack of respect for the law. I have no problem telling people to FO.

Why don't you mark the prices of the products already with tax included?
Actually, that is a question for the whole of the U.S....
Read this very carefully, I shall write this only once!

That's why I buy online... no sales tax. Since I don't live in the USA, I don't feel pleasure when I have to pay sales tax in there. It's enough with the 15% sales tax I have to pay everyday in my country (Venezuela).

Saludos desde Monterrey,
Luis

That would be great if it were a universal policy because as it stands
now,I can't raise the price and remain competitive.
Right now,if no taxes paid by customer, discount on price,I have to pay tax on
discount price, squeezing profit.Three way discount at my expense. That
sucks.

The medical expenses that you use whilst alive, are taxed... Perhaps you didnt pay for them, but you still used a taxable service...

Having worked as a cashier at two different places here in Washington, I've had this happen more than a few times. When I still lived with my parents in Redmond, I'd get an occassional foreign born customer who would argue about paying, but what happens more often down here in Olympia (which is considerably more irritating) is that I get lots of Oregon residents who use their tax exemptions to buy stuff for their family/friends who live in Washington. Working at a certain home improvement mega-retailer, I get some pretty expensive transactions. One customer paid $1,100.00 for roofing supplies, then flashed his Oregon driver's license and got it knocked down to somewhere just under $1,000.00. The whole time I was doing this, his mom was right there talking about the roof work they had to do (I'm sure they drove all the way from Oregon to buy their roofing supplies in Olympia). Long story short, Washington residents get screwed out of $90+ worth of public funds. Furthermore, tax exemption doesn't require anything more than showing an ID or putting in a tax-exempt number (for resalers), making it really easy for people with old (non-expired) Oregon or Alaska licenses to skirt the tax even when they're living in Washington.
