From Jerusalem To Tel Aviv

Thu Aug 17, 2006 8:01 pm

The new president of Costa Rica "Oscar Arias" has said that his country will move its embassy in Israel from Jerusalem to Tel Aviv,in a move that pleases Arab nations.
Oscar Arias,a former Nobel Peace Prize winner, said on wednesday that he made the decision to win more friends in the Middle East and comply with United Nation's resolutions.
"It's time to rectify an historic error that hurts us internationally and deprives us of almost any form of friendship with the Arab world, and more broadly with Islamic civilisation,to which a sixth of humanity belongs," Arias said at an event marking his first 100 days in office.
He said Shimon Peres,Israe's deputy prime minister, had called him on Tuesday to ask him to reconsider the decision.
Israel regards East Jerusalem as part of it's "undivided and eternal capital".It captured the eastern part of Jerusalem in the 1967 Middle East war and annexed it in a move not recgnised internationally.
The 200,000 Arab residents of East Jerusalem are caught between Israel and an emerging Palestinian state, wich wants the eastern part of Jerusalem as its future capital.
Luis Alberto Monge, the former Costa Rican president, moved the embassy to Jerusalem in 1982 as a show of support for Israel.
Arias said the relocation to Tel Aviv should not, however,be interpreted as a slight to Israel, wich has had historically close ties to Costa Rica
"As far as Costa Rica is concerned, the right to exist and live free of threat, particulary the criminal threat of terrorism,is beyond all doubt,"said Arias, who won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1987 for his effort to end civil wars in neighbouring Central America nations.
The decision will leave El Salvador as the only country in the world with an embassy in Jerusalem.

Luis A. Monge was not only a President but an ex-Ambassador to Israel.

My country has a close relation with Israel and I think that the decision to move our embassy to Tel Aviv maybe means that they are seeking for more protection [or be protected] in such city.

Anyway, whatever the reason is, we have a large community of Jews, Lebanese and many other citizens from the Middle East and a good relation with ALL of them which is more important.

Even if Jerusalem becomes recognized as a capital of Israel, Palestine, or both (it is the capital whether you like it or not, recognition and actuality are very different things), I imagine that embassies will stay in Tel Aviv. Tel Aviv provides both better security and easier access.

And have heard the Syrian embassador to the US saying that they have worked with the Lebanese authorities and have made it clear that Sheba farms is NOT considered by Syria as its part, in fact they consider it as a part of Lebanon. Wheather Syrian or Lebanese, it is surely NOT the territory of the country that occupies it, namely the one and only: Israel.

Makes sense since all other embassies and consulates (with the exception of El Salvador) are located in the Tel Aviv area (Chiles is located in Herzilya just north of TA), I also expect them to make some
money selling off their embassy in Jerusalem, real estate prices there is sky high.

My understanding of the situation was that there is some sort of a US legal document stating that the Embassy will eventually move to Jerusalem and that the President has to make a decision about it every 6 months or something.

In fact I believe the plot of land where the Jerusalem US embassy will be has already been demarcated and was decided on from a long time ago.

IIRC every US president has prolonged the move, but I'm not nearly as much as an expert on this as RJ is so I stand to be corrected when I hear the answer to FOMEA's question.

Anyway, the US policy on its Israeli embassy is just about the only inconsistent element in its stance towards Israel. I'm not sure what real difference it would make if the embassy was in Tel Aviv instead of Jerusalem.

Either way, I've always been of the opinion that Jerusalem should be an international city, but I suppose that is never going to happen, as I imagine that East Jerusalem will become the capital of the future Palestinian state, as and when it is created.

Leaving the Old City (i.e. Temple Mount and the Walling Wall) in the hands of the Palestinians? I doubt it. One of the most published images of the 1967 war (and a poignant one) is that of a soldier crying when seeing the Wall for the first time. To give that back would, in most Israelis minds, be a slap on the face of those that have died in all of Israel's wars. I don't believe the country would agree with that.

I believe Jerusalem will remain Israel or, at maximum, an international city. But I don't see a change in the traditional Seder saying to "next year in Tel Aviv" ever happening.

So when you said "preparing to move in" you meant it in the eventual sense or do you have insider info that Bush is gonna go for it next time the Embassy act is due?

Haha, flattered that you would think I have insider information!  Smile But no, I meant it in the general sense...It's only a matter of time. Many analysts have suggested that Bush will do it towards the end of his term, especially now that the "peace process" is dead and Hamas has been elected.

No, he doesn't. The UN has already declared that Israel (UNSC resolution #425) had completely pulled out of Lebanon.
http://www.un.org/News/Press/docs/2000/20000618.sc6878.doc.html
Here is an interesting article:
"While rummaging through government archives in Paris in 2002, Kaufman found documents dating from 1920 to1941 showing that the French had accidentally placed Sheba in Syria instead of Lebanon"

"But the faulty borders had been drawn, and the mistake was reinforced thereafter."

"The international community has been calling on Syria and Lebanon to determine their exact borders in the vicinity of the Sheba Farms and register those borders at the U.N. Both countries have pledged to do so but no action has been taken. On May 15, 2000, the U.N. received a map from the Lebanese government, dated 1966, that showed the farms located in Lebanon. But the U.N. says it has 10 other maps, all issued on later dates from official Lebanese sources, putting the Sheba Farms in Syria."

"However, there is another question that is perhaps more important than whether Sheba belongs to Lebanon or Syria: If the Israelis withdrew from Sheba, would this put an end to Hizbullah? Clearly, the answer is no. Hizbullah Secretary General Hasan Nasrallah has said repeatedly that his goal is to liberate all of what he considers Palestine, not only South Lebanon. Hassan Izz al-Din, a spokesman for Hizbullah, once said that if Israel withdraws from Sheba "we will not stop fighting them. Our goal is to liberate the 1948 borders of Palestine, [Jews] can go back to Germany or wherever they came from."

Nice, very nice.  Angry And some people actually defend such "lunatics" (the words that keep coming to my mind will get me banned) in here. I am sure that for them re-activating Birkenau or Bergen-Belsen would be an act of "cleansing" for the world.

And then people rave and scream when Israel keeps defending itself from these animals....

Infuriating.

That would be correct. But as stated on the report above, the situation is a little more complicated with the Shebaa Farms area, were a Jewish man did discover, after the UN certified the Israeli pullout, that the area is Lebanese territory. But while Syria can state the same, they have not yet legally reliquinshed their claim. Therefore, both sides here are wrong, and both sides are not working towards a solution. And this is not expressed to their own population, instead the blame game gets played.

about the US embassy in Jerusalem- I think some members of this forum are confusing the US embassy to Israel with the US consulate to Jerusalem. The US-Israel Embassy is in Tel Aviv and has not nor has it ever been intended to be in Jerusalem.

The US Consulate to Jerusalem has until recently been located in East Jerusalem, but was recently moved to a larger, more modern, and safer facility in West Jerusalem, but the US Consualate to Jerusalem is not assigned to the US Embassy in Tel Aviv, they are separate.

ok, actually I'm wrong. yes, it never has existed in Jerusalem, but the intention to move it to Jerusalem does in fact exist in the form of the The Jerusalem Embassy Relocation Act of 1995

notice that the US Conulate to Jerusalem's website does not title Jerusalem as "Jerusalem, Israel" like it does for any other consulate:

http://jerusalem.usconsulate.gov

http://duesseldorf.usconsulate.gov
http://florence.usconsulate.gov/english

This is intentional.

Wrong, as pointed out in your subsequent post. It is inevitable that it will be in Jerusalem. Perhaps the only good reason to leave it in Tel Aviv is the gorgeous backyard and view from the US Ambassador's residence:
