Are VWs Overpriced In Europe?

Mon Aug 21, 2006 8:42 am

I say they are...especially in Europe! (I also think they are a bit overpriced in the USA)

So lets hear some feedback from Europeans and how much a VW costs on their market and if they think they want too much money for it.

Captaingomes says:
VW's are more expensive than the lower end cars, but there's a reason for it. If you value slightly higher end stuff, then they're not. Their markups are also not as large as they should be. Hence, for me, they are generally not, with some exceptions"

The argument is, does VW charge too much for their product especially in Europe.

Let the discussions begin!

The starting prices in North America and Europe aren't all that different, just that you get less for the same money in Europe. For example, the smallest engine on a VW Golf in the UK is a 1.4L I4, whilst in North America on the Rabbit it is a 2.5L I5.

Example: Starting price on a UK Golf is £11,995, the Rabbit is about $20,000 to start in Canada, but remember the UK figure includes tax.

The funny thing coming here to the UK is how VWs have a bulletproof reliability reputation, but in Canada they were always though of as pricey to run with troublesome electrics.

There's a good reason for this though   Even my 2.0 litre Peugeot 306 is a fuel guzzler by UK standards, getting about 38mpg for motorway driving. However at least in Europe we are spoiled for choice with many of the same (or similar) cars available in North America, plus all the marques that aren't sold across the Atlantic.
