Ultraconservative Group Says: Eliminate Hotel Porn

Wed Aug 23, 2006 11:22 pm

It's "nice" to know that, despite all the things that are wrong with the world today, some folks will still find time in their busy schedules to infringe on the liberties of others.

See:

http://www.newsmax.com/archives/ic/2006/8/22/210525.shtml?s=ic

First they came for the smokers....

To crusading, busybody do-gooders, I would suggest: There are far more pressing issues for you to address than the rights of individuals in their own homes -- temporary or permanent. Go after the polygamists in your midst first. Or is polygamy too much of a family value?

If religious oppression of liberty begins at home, then what better task for you than to start with your own?

Dont they know there is an OFF button?

"The leader of the campaign against in-room porn is Phil Burress, a self-described former porn addict who heads the Cincinnati-based Citizens for Community Values."

WTF a former porn addict? former my ass, he got caught watching it by his wife and now says its a "problem".

I'm with you. I'm pretty much a libertarian when it comes to what people do in the privacy of their own homes, as long as it's between consenting adults. I find what the extreme right wing does to limit liberty almost as threatening as what the left does to forbid us from defending it.

Someone I knew was in a hotel room in South Africa, as he was flicking through the channels he came across "Disabled Porn". Strange? Well yes, but not so freaky as items like Animal Farm etc etc.

Anyhow, being alone down route and not having been successful in the hotel bar, he warmed up his hands and selected the channel. The TV screen went blank and he waited in anticipation. However nothing came on.

He went back to the menu system to look for the porn channel again but couldn't find it. Thats when it dawned on him... "Disabled Porn" was "Disable Porn" and he'd turned off the adult channels!

Far too shy to ask reception to re-activate the channels, he spent 2 weeks alone with no blue movies haha!

Most of the hotel chains are public stock companies. Some stockholders in them may include religious organizations or religious based investment and retirement funds. While they see hospitlitaly companies as good investments, they do not want to support porn or gain profits from it, as it is offensive to their faith and that is understandable. Of course, the cable and satallite tv service companies which include public stock companies like Time Warner and Comcast, offer plenty of porn channels (pay-per-view or suscirption) or HBO which has some nudity and sexual content as well. Why not go after them too?

If they cut off the hotel porn, that will ring the death-knell for the airline industry, particularly the lucrative business class segment.

"Really ultraconservative groups try to target the hotels in their zest to eliminate porn," Shepard said. "In their zest to have their personal morals prevail, they're eliminating choice for others."

That about says it all right there. If they don't want to watch it that's fine. Trying to eliminate it to "protect" me is stepping on my right of choice. Just as bad as any radical muslim telling me I have to die because I don't believe in Allah.

If I only knew that then.

I had a former boss that thought it was funny to turn on the porn in your hotel room when you were not looking, just so it would show up on the bill and some prude in the finance department would gag when she reviewed your expense report.

Yes, hotels will happily print two receipts for you (One with the movies (of any type) and one with the room charges). This way you can pay for the movies separately from your room charges and only submit the room charges on your expense report. I have done it multiple times.

BTW, these are the same people the gay rights movement have been fighting for years. Yes, they want to control your life and no I don't think it is American. It is unfortunate that the Republican party has served as their mouth piece for so long.

Dumbasses. If they don't agree with it, don't watch it. It takes a good few buttons to push to get it, and in some hotels i've stayed in you need to ring reception to get it. If you don't want to watch it, don't spoil it for the porno-holics who do. It's like the people who complain in site related about certain types of threads (a few that comes to mind, the US election threads, or the world cup ones). Don't read/watch it. Does this mean that all the dirty magazines and DVD's in newspapers in the centre ad's page have to be removed?

Just as long as the hotel cleans the sheets everyday, I have no problem with people watching porn in their hotel rooms.

Seriously though, it's hardly as if the hotels have Spice Channel in between Disney Channel and CNN. In fact, all hotels I've been to have only had porno movies as PPV with a feature to disable it. These people are former junkies who are barely able to control their own problems, so they want to take their vice away from every other consenting adult. Its kind of like the people who say alcohol should be banned.

Awfully sorry if I was unclear--I was only *suggesting* that the GOP take up this clear-cut moral issue as their next agenda item, once flag-burning, English-as-national-language, and the other mega-issues have been dealt with, or bypassed in embarassment. I certainly didn't mean that any GOP operatives would have already jumped on this bandwagon...goodness no.

One of the key beliefs of the Republican Party is that people should be free to live their lives without intervention from the government. Yet, the party continues to dance with these kinds of groups that don't want a separation of church and state, want people to have fewer freedoms and choices, and want increased government involvement in people's personal lives. I just don't get it. Even if the Republican party isn't 100% "religious nuts", then why do they continue to pander to these people, and why does the "non-religious nut" contingent of the party continue to accept it?
-------------------

Either way, we don't need to worry about them succeeding. Hotel chains make a healthy amount of profit (not revenue, profit) on adult entertainment. At the same time, chains like Marriott are huge donors to the Republican Party. Republicans in congress would never bite the hands that feed them by going along with such a ridiculous idea.

The Republican party champions individual rights and government disinvolvement, and religious fanatics are not consistent with those belief.

The Democratic party generally supports equal rights for all, as well as protection of the environment. Feminists and "econuts" as you call them may be extreme, but at least their most core beliefs (equality and the environment) are consistent with the Democratic Party in general.

So it brings me back to the key question: why does the Republican Party which continually tells us that we need to minimize government intervention into people's lives continue to pander to people who want to do the opposite?

I'm surprised these prudes haven't included Howard Stern as a target in their crusade against porn, as OnCommand, one of the two suppliers being targeted, offers Howard TV (PPV programing that offers uncensored segments from the Howard Stern Show [It's basically the old E! program only uncensored]) as part of their programming and some of it is softcore porn (Nothing like a porn star riding the Sybian completely naked!).

What's this ultraconservative group going to target next, the high speed internet hotels offer, as folks can watch porn that was as well..............

Just because someone is a Conservative doesn't mean they are a religious nut.

Very true, however the Conservatives we have in office, more importantly, the conservative we have in power in office, ARE.

seriosuly, a movement needs to start to bring more gay porn to these hotels.

my comment was right on, you included the GOP even though the story doesn't even mention them.

Ah, here little buddy, I'll type real slow-like so's you can understand...I meant (and explained) that this could be the GOP's next big bandwagon issue. Nowhere did I imply that it *was* an issue the party would whole-heartedly adapt as a divisive, wedge issue...just sort of half in jest that it *could.* To recap (and sorry to bore the readers who are not Gilligan, but he needs some 'splaining I guess): hotel porn bans are not yet a GOP wedge issue; the article does not say that it is, and I did not imply that it was; I did imply that, given the track record of recent years, it might well become one.

Quoting Gilligan (Reply 39):
econuts, feminists, and a whole host of other tunnel vision groups that make up the democratic party.

Ah now there's a masterful "big brushtroke." Very enlightening use of terms. I think now we know where the warm winds in your signature are coming from...

The only moral bandwagon issue that the GOP has taken up lately has been gay marriage, which if you see the polling it is not quite a Republican issue only. So you even suggesting that the GOP 'could' take it up does not jive with what the GOP has done lately.

Just that little tiny one... So tiny - that it practically won the election....

I would be interested in looking into this. You offering a link?

Wasnt one of the reasons for invading Iraq a moral responsability to save the Iraquies from Saddam?
