Ahhhh.... New Lens Smell

Fri Aug 25, 2006 10:57 am

Awhile ago I had a thread asking for advice on a new lens, 300 f/2.8 or the 200-400 f/4.

Well, today arrived the new addition the 200-400 f/4.

Big version: Width: 1024 Height: 685 File size: 494kb

Big version: Width: 1024 Height: 1535 File size: 765kb

Here it is next to my 80-200 f/2.8D mounted on a D200:
Big version: Width: 1024 Height: 683 File size: 529kb

I can already tell it's monopod time.

Thanks for the input Chad and Eric. Now back to the cage where you can resume flinging your poo at each other.

I know - that's why the flinging poo comment. When my kids say "if you have poo, fling it now" it cracks me up. We could start another thread over Chevy versus Ford versus Dodge?

I'll post some photos from it if I don't arrested from using it.

YYZflyer,

I just purchased a D200 yesterday, and got the kit with the 18-70mm 1:3.5-4.5G ED DX lense. At the same time, I also purchased the Nikkor 80-400mm 1:4.5-5.6D ED VR lense. The camera and lenses alone cost me $3559.99 ($1999.99 for the D200 body and 18-70, and $1559.99 for the 80-400 VR). Add to that a Pelican case, Lowpro Softcase, a new CF card, and tax, and the grand total came out to $4167. I will admit, it was quite a lot to spend at once, but it was worth it... Now, If I could only afford the 200-400 f/4, then I would be in heaven.

(Oh, by the way, I am a former Canon user. I used to shoot with a 30D, and before that, a 350D. I saw the light, and switched to Nikon)

Wow, nice lense  . Ive been thinking about getting one, at some point i probably will. Now you need a second body if you have one, so you can have the d200 80-200 on and maybe a D2x  with the 200-400mm  . If that hasn't burnt enough of a hole in your wallet. Be really good when you post some photos from it, haven't really seen what that beast can do

Then lens is not difficult to use and is very well balanced. It is not -that- heavy. Sometimes the lens is a bit difficult to use in a crowd because of its length.

The bag fits the lens plus an attached body with a battery pack. The lens is weatherproof. I used it in heavy rain with the D200 without any problems (also thanks to its enormous lens hood). Sometimes the 200mm low end of the zoom is a bit too long. And if you are tired, just place it on its lens hood.

Roel.

I guess discussing the "smell" of a new lens isn't worthy in the photog forum, according to the mods  Silly

Psyops, congratulation on your choice. This lens looks like a baseball bat. (or like a bazooka for the use on airports )

It`s so refreshing to see a beginning C vs N conflict, here on a.net, instead of these booring A vs B wars.

Good that it is a Nikon, because their cameras are better than Canons.

(and I love to use my fantastic D2x)

I have a Nikon D70s that I bought a little over a year ago. I love it! I have a problem with dustspots on the pictures though  Sad I even got the camera cleaned professionally because I wasn't able to remove the dust away myself and the professional cleaning cost me $200 and I'm still able to see dust spots on the pictures  Sad

I really wish that I would be able to afford the D200 plus that lens from the thread starter  Silly

Thanks everyone for the feedback.

Quoting Javibi (Reply 14):

The lens is about 7 pounds. I have shot a couple of days with it, and found it does take some adjusting to get used to. Partially just the intimidation factor - it's expensive, don't want to drop it, but also learning the right body position, etc. It is hand-holdable, but if you are planning on shooting for some time, then a monopod is a necessity to take the stress off.

Quoting Pavvyben (Reply 15):

I do have two D200's (that was the camera taking the picture of the new lens). A D2x: perhaps, - maybe I'll wait for the D3x?

Apparently not. That I don't get, but now know there are serious consequences. Hey my dad always said I wasn't the sharpest knife in the drawer.

This one is in the queue, hand held:
