Harris: "State Minus Church = Lie"

Sat Aug 26, 2006 2:43 am

That wacky Kitty Harris has announced that if you don't elect Christians to office, you're voting for sin. Read all about it, there are too many delicious quotes to list: http://www.sun-sentinel.com/news/loc...17040.story?coll=sfla-news-florida

As a California Democrat, as concerned about the GOP abandoning the Senatorial candidacy of Rep. Harris as so many of our right-wing friends were about the Dems not backing Joe Lieberman, I'll once again issue the call: here's a woman who has done SO MUCH for her party in the past (as Florida Secretary of State, and in the US House), who clearly espouses views shared by large numbers of Republicans, and yet--her party ignores her. Please, Reeps, help Kitty! Don't exhibit the shameful, shocking cut-and-run behavior that really makes me weep the exact same tears that so many wept for Joe Lieberman. Point of clarification: are they still "crocodile tears" in Florida, or are the "alligator tears" down there?

If she has so clearly espoused the views of the Republican party, she woud have been supported.

Oh heck...can't resist, here's just one sample sound-bite from the woman who is so shamelfully backed-away-from by the party that she so loyally supports:

"If you are not electing Christians, tried and true, under public scrutiny and pressure, if you're not electing Christians, then in essence you are going to legislate sin," she told interviewers, citing abortion and gay marriage as two examples of that sin.

Doing so, she said, "will take western civilization, indeed other nations because people look to our country as one nation as under God and whenever we legislate sin and we say abortion is permissible and we say gay unions are permissible, then average citizens who are not Christians, because they don't know better, we are leading them astray and it's wrong..."

Would any average citizens, who are not Xian because they don't know better, care to respond? Or some who are because they do? PS: the photo that accompanies the Sun-Sentinel article doesn't really do Rep. Harris the equine justice she deserves.

if she learned anything at all from that tale, it better be: "duck, there's a pie coming your way!"

I was going to add something about how the Reeps must be through gnashing their teeth over the Nutmeg State's daring to run another Dem in their primary, but I thought better of using "teeth-gnashing" in a thread about Rep. Harris. That's just a horse of a different color. Oh, dammit.

True.

But I think we can all agree that Katherine Harris is a bonafide idiot.

Someone should tell her that she was the GOP's one night stand back in 2000. And that she got paid (with a Congressional seat) for putting out.

But every 'ho's days are numbered. She's gone from being a high class political hooker to a down and dirty streetwalker trolling for votes among the far right Christian wing of the GOP. Everyone knows that this woman has never herself been a rabid religious nut and that she's spouting this @#$#$% just to ensure that she gets the fundie votes in the primary. And you know, she may just be doing the right thing. It's those people who pack the voting booths in the primaries.

No, but she's held State Office for a significant period and played an important role in the 2000 elections. The point is the Republican Party had a field day with Lieberman's defeat, but have been amazingly silent about Harris and Murkowski. Bottom line, in all cases, the voters, who actually are the only ones that matter, have made it clear they don't want 'em, and anything posted by the opposing parties is/was just political grandstanding.

She sounds like Judge Roy Moore! The only reason the Florida GOP organization hasn't supported her is because they don't believe she can beat Bill Nelson. That's why they tried to draft "Scarborough's Country"'s Joe Scarborough, a hard right-wing former Pensacola congressman, to run for the senate. Joe unexpectedly resigned several years ago, just after reelection, claiming the usual desire for greater family time. Of course, he had just been through a nasty divorce, and a young female aide had mysteriously died in his congressional office with barely a notice from the media. While Joe has never been linked with the aide's death, there has never been a satisfactory explanation for the apparent attempt to keep the incident quiet. He was smart to decline entering the senate race. Why do I mention Joe? In view of his baggage, real or otherwise, the attempt to draft him into the race shows how desperate the Florida GOP was to find a more viable alternative to Katty Harris.

Kathrine ought to remember, what any good Christian should, what Christ said when he was asked if the people should pay taxes: "Give unto Caesar what is Caesar's; give unto God what is God's."

In other words, he was saying, I think, that His Father wasn't, in the long run, concerned with worldy matters, such as politics and money, but in the salvation of the person.

And this, Katie, is NOT a Christian nation. Not everyone believes what you do; not everyone shares your view within the Christian community of Church and State; and it can and should not be run by Christians, only for the sake of Christians.

Take a hike, lady, and may God Bless everyone, not just Christians.

You have Falwell confused with fellow televangelist/nutjob Pat Robertson, who ran in 1988.

A lot of these Christian Conservatives are going to be in for a rude awakening within the next few years. I think that by the time the 2008 elections roll around, anyone even remotely associated with Bush is going to have a hell of a time getting elected or re-elected. As it has already somewhat played out in the primaries not only for US House and Senate seat, but for statewide offices in some states (Case in point, the defeat of former Abramoff associate Ralph Reed here in Georgia in the GOP Lt. Governor primary). The Abramoff Factor will play a role in the next few elections as well, because what's happened so far is more than likely the tip of the iceberg.

I lost the quote but to a degree I go along with that thinking. The outrage over Lieberman losing his seat was fair in that he was being persecuted in an organized and nationwide campaign by the left side of the democrat party who was very mad at him for one thing, and they entered the state race with the intent of displaying their will at hammering any democrat that doesn't toe the line in this issue. Lots of democrats displayed real non-class in this effort. The issue with Harris is that she's not going to get elected, and will definitely be a lightning rod for the left and would lose the seat. Lieberman would not have lost the democrat seat, nor would he have turned republican.

I don't think that she's the right candidate, but the primaries will always sort that out. The republicans nationally supported someone else in order to defuse a potential attention getting fire where one was not really needed. The democrats started a fire and that was a large part of the reason they worked so hard against Lieberman.

Quoting Jaysit (Reply 10):
But I think we can all agree that Katherine Harris is a bonafide idiot.

I don't like using exaggerated expressions of intelligence or stupidity since they're invariably unprovable and lower the level of conversation. Calling President Clinton a lying perjuring womanizer is stating fact that you can back up with proof. You can't prove Katherine Harris is anything other than a potential harridan for the right who is a less well-off version of Pelosi.....with an equal apparent amount of plastic surgery.

Quoting Jaysit (Reply 10):

See, now that turns the conversation to an argument about bullshit. She's not a whore, she's perhaps overimbued with confidence and conviction in her own popularity, but other than that she's done nothing wrong....unless you're a democrat looking for someone besides Gore to blame for 2000.

Lieberman is the victim of a modern day electoral lynching.....(I've been waiting to use that one).... No one in Florida is being booted....there's a fight about who's going to run for senate there. The democrats are trying to say that the situation is the same as with Lieberman, but on the other foot and claim it's hypocrisy. They're reaching pretty far for that analogy.

SHHHH!!!!....I just lectured my friend Jaysit on that issue! Stop that now (imagine Arnie at his victory speech....I'm sort of on a roll here...at least I'm amusing myself)..... ok...the democrats are certainly to the left, and many of their core ideas such as nationalized health care, higher taxation and more regulation of the economy and the national industries certainly do approach socialism more closely, they aren't really socialists...for the most part. Much....

No, he lost an election. The other guy got the most votes. Between Iraq and Terri Schiavo, a lot of people in Connecticut are unhappy with Joe. That's their prerogative, and they showed it at the polls. I personally think Joe should have withdrawn gracefully after the primary loss. He can claim to be a scapegoat, but his downfall was because of his support for "staying the course" in Iraq and voting for congress to interfere in the Schiavo case. If I lived in CT, I would have voted against him for the same reasons.

The Florida GOP didn't just fail to support Katbox Harris; they tried to pressure her to withdraw from the race. The real comparison here is with the Ohio veteran (whose name I've forgotten) who was pressured by the Democratic hierarchy to withdraw from the senate race because they felt he was less likely to succeed in unseating the Republican (?DeWine). The Republicans had a lot to say about how dirty it was for the Dems to pressure this guy out of the race, yet the Florida Republicans have done the same thing with Kat. This is where the real comparison lies, and where claims of hypocrisy on the part of the Republicans can be made.

While there might be crocs in the bay, the only population of Crocodiles that I know for an absolute FACT exist in Florida are near the cooling ponds of Turkey point in Miami. That being said.. once you move inland to fresh water it's all aligators and TONS of them.

Rep. Harris is running against other candidates in the Republican Senate primary in Florida. Golly...that seems almost...similar!

So DL021...which is it, crocodile tears or alligator? If you're still selling wolf tickets over the "genuine sense of concern over the fate of Joe Lieberman," it's probably a tough sell. But the "it's a shame about Kitty" bandwagon is still accepting riders!

As you should well know due to the political makeup of that state and the incumbency of the senator in place, the democrats are a shoo-in for that seat. The race would have been won in the primary if Joe had not decided to run as an independent.

Katherine Harris is a complete idiot and an embarassment to the Republican party. While she may not be a "Cruella de Vil" as described by Democrats, she is definitely not the sharpest tool in the shed, and deserves to lose this election.

P.S. When has Falcon ever said strong words like this against Democrats. Never! Why? Because there aren't any embarassing Democrats like this! All Democrats are gods! Even Cynthia McKinney!  Yeah sure

Now, Jaysit (who we last saw being 'lectured' by DL021 over...something boring...) brings up an interesting discussion in the whole Harris-for-Senate train wreck: *is* she a genuine Christian-nation nutjob, or is that just posturing to win the Christian-nation nutjob vote?

No, she's probably a genuine Christian nutjob.  wink

But then...

Quoting DL021 (Reply 28):
She's posturing.....just like most of them, and most of the moderate dems who run hard left to win primaries and centralize to try and win generals.

But it's also the type of rhetoric that turns off mainstream voters. Mabie it's time for her to bow out. I'm sure GWB will give her some nice cushy job or an ambassador post somewhere...like Chad.  Big grin

When has Falcon ever said strong words like this against Democrats. Never! Why? Because there aren't any embarassing Democrats like this! All Democrats are gods! Even Cynthia McKinney!

To be fair I do believe that Falcon considers McKinney to be an incompetent nutjob, the same as most Americans of any political stripe. He may correct me if I'm wrong, but I think I remember him saying similar things.

I think they want her to just go away. She's a magnet for bad press and not really needed.

And this, Katie, is NOT a Christian nation. Not everyone believes what you do; not everyone shares your view within the Christian community of Church and State; and it can and should not be run by Christians, only for the sake of Christians

Now tell that to (and convince) the gazillion voters that have put so many of these clowns into public office by believing that only the right-wing has the "right" and decent values.
If it pisses off the right, I'm all for it.

As you should well know due to the political makeup of that state and the incumbency of the senator in place, the democrats are a shoo-in for that seat. The race would have been won in the primary if Joe had not decided to run as an independent.

By the by...in Florida, do you imagine there's a Republican running against Ktty in the primary that has a good chance of winning it, and then defeating Sen. Nelson in the general election? Or do you think the primary is a (wait for it...) horse race?

McKinny had that same thing Delay had-the hubris of power. She thought that it was all about here, not about who she was serving.

Unfortunately, the member who brought this up has some obsession with whatever I say, so I'm kind of surprised he doesn't remember me saying that.

Sadly, Congress is, and has been, full of Cynthia McKinny's and Tom Delay's, and they're not going to go away anytime soon.

Update! Or: the confused clear things up for the confused's benefit, from the Sun-Sentinel again:

"Asked whether the U.S. should be a secular country, Harris said: "I think that our laws, I mean, I look at how the law originated, even from Moses, the 10 Commandments. And I don't believe, that uh . . . That's how all of our laws originated in the United States, period. I think that's the basis of our rule of law."

Harris' clarification seemed to satisfy Pasco County Republican Party Chairman Bill Bunting. Bunting, Saturday's gun-show organizer, served as Harris' host for the day.

Before she arrived at the gun show, Bunting said he was concerned about her comments because Republicans "need to be inclusive of everyone."

But after talking with Harris for a few moments, Bunting said all was right.

"She cleared it up," he said. "I'm comfortable now."

There, that's better eh! And she's speaking at a gun show...in her natural habitat.
