US Citizens Would U Like Your State 2 Be A Country

Sat Aug 26, 2006 3:28 pm

Do you feel more "American" or more "Citizen of your state"? Would you prefer to be independent or this situation is better?

No, I'm very happy to be a resident of the State of Washington and a citizen of the United States. While much of what happens in DC makes me shake my head, I think I, and most other people (as well as the individual states) are much better off as part of the whole.

Edited to add: I'll predict that L-188 is in the minority on this one. Other than Hawaii, I've never heard any significant discussion on the topic, even in Alaska.

I'm quite happy with Alaska as a part of the United States. The benefits far outweigh the negatives. While things that occur in Washington DC these days has to make one wonder if we've not been invaded by E.T. and company - the benefits related to being a part of the Union are unquestionable.

The AIP has some 13,000 registered voters in Alaska.

But I will agree the Hawaiian Monarchy probably has a stronger case at the moment.

One weakness is the AIP's reference back to UN mandates that where not followed by the US in the years leading up to the statehood vote.

I'm perfectly fine with California being a part of the US. Though I still think it would be pretty interesting if it were a country. Of course, being the 7th largest economy in the world if it were its own country.

President Schwarzenegger ? Too scary.

Premier Schwarzenegger ? Sounds like a Bratwurst manufacturer.

Emperor Schwarzenegger ? Too difficult for the media to pronounce.

Prime Minister Schwarzenegger ? Awwww, forget it!

....and the candidates for our next election are even worse!

Even though California's economy is supposed to be in the worlds top 10, this place is more of a state of mind than a state of the union.  crazy

My state use to be an independent nation from 1836-1845. It was called the Republic of Texas. I'm not sure if I would like to be a separate nation. I'm tired of the crap out of DC, but being independent also has it's issues.

Yeah, I'd like Nevada to be an independant nation for just a month or two. Just long enough to kick California's butt in a war, re-draw the state lines giving them Las Vegas and us the north coast. Then we rejoin the USA.

Last polls I saw, that even if restricted to those with Hawaiian ancestry, the vote wouldn't be to leave. Throw in all of the transplants from everywhere else, and its never going to happen. They have some legitimate gripes, that need to be addressed, but secession is never going to be an option.

But back to your comment, I don't think we can call Jefferson Davis a terrorist in today's sense.

But I would agree they need to change that....Something by Thomas Jefferson would be much more appropriate for the cause.

I want to run everyone out of the counties who has lived there for less than two generations. Most of all, I want a delicious meal of spotted owl on a bed of fresh redwood shoots.

Since the new nation of Nevada will not have welfare the hippies will move out of their yurts and VW buses and go back to new California. Nevada will need a seaport. Eureka will do fine or maybe we move the Oakland container port up to San Pablo Bay.

Texas born, Texas bred, and when I die I'll be Texas dead  Silly

But no, Texas should not be an independent country. If you think the national budget is mishandled it just means you haven't looked closely at what the Texas Leg does. Although it would be very interesting to see the line of succession since the Lieutenant Governor, Railroad Commissioner, and I think Agriculture Commissioner all have more power in the state than the Governor.

And just recently I moved from one state that used to be an independent country (Texas) to another state that used to be an independent country (Vermont). Vermont also should not be an independent country simply because it does not have the resources to do so. Of all the states I have visited, though, either Vermont or New Hampshire would have to be the most independent minded and pro-state government. It is interesting because even though they are side by side, they are run completely differently. Vermont is one of the highest taxed states in the nation, New Hampshire has no state income tax or sales tax. Vermont leans Socialist, New Hampshire pure Libertarian.

I'm a nationalist Californian, and If any state would be successful after secession,it would be California. But secession itself, would not be graceful if not
a bloody civil war.Taxes would be the main issue. And you know GWB.
He'll attack us on WMD issue.(LOL)Any excuse.

But if the military expense is not a major burden, then medical,
education, illigal immigration and the highway system, could be better addressed.Even lower taxes could be realized. And maybe run
for Mexico, with a new political party, and fix their economy and then get out.

But I also feel that some civil liberties might be expendable.
Good and bad on that issue.
And design a new flag.

While I'll always be a native Floridian Cracker and an honorary Georgia Cracker and proud of both of my states (other than those Yankee tools in South Florida) I will also always see myself as an America first.

Though I am a big proponent of State's Rights and the 10th Amendment to the Constitution I am not to the point of where we were before the War Between The States of seeing myself a Floridian before an American.

There are some small Cascadian independence movements that I sympathize with that are pushing for an autonomous state composed of Western Washington and Oregon (some even push for Western BC and Northwest California to be included), but it's not something that I'm terribly gung-ho about.
