Where Are Your Ancestors From?

Sun Aug 27, 2006 4:07 pm

Kind of curious for those who have ancestory from parts other than yours - where are your ancestors from?

Personally, I am almost 100% Hungarian - my grandparents were born and raised there before going to the USA; my parents were born in the USA before moving to Namibia; so I am a Hungarian-American-Namibian. What about you?

Another interesting point - do you speak the language? While I am not quite fluent in Hungarian, I can get by pretty well while I am there.

Well my father is from Mexico. His mother was born in Mexico and his real dad was an Irish tourist. So he does not know his real dad. Just hearing things from his mom. My mother is from Alabama. Haha is that a country of its own? No but really she is from Alabama and her mom is from Ireland and her father is from England. So I am the second generation you could say being born in the USA. Maybe only half then considering just my mother was born in the USA and my father in Mexico. I can speak fluent English lol and some Spanish. My other spoken language is Portuguese.

Mom is 100% Portuguese. Family sailed from Madeira and Azores to Maui between 1882 and 1886, and we've been in Hawai'i ever since.

Dad is 75% Italian and 25% German. All of his grandparents immigrated to New York in the early 1900s. My grandparents moved to Hawai'i after WWII and my dad was born on the Big Island.

I speak only english, unfortunately...4 years of Spanish and 2 years of Hawaiian in school didn't quite stick :-/

Both of my parents are from El Salvador, my grandparents were also born in El Salvador, but their parents were all from Spain, that is in my mother side, then in my father side in my grandma's side all have been born in El Salvador, they were natives from the country (not sure if that is the correct expression), and my granparent's side a part was from Africa.
So I'm 100 % Salvadorean, I'm the 3rd generation born here, but my blood has roots in Africa, Spain and El Salvador .

I am 100% Australian.

But my father was originally Icelandic, and my mother is Bhutanese. My father came to Australia in the 1960s, eventually met my mother in central asia, had me, and came to Australia in the early 1980s.

I'm English, my wife is English, my Geandparents were English/Welsh. My family on my fathers side apparently originated in Scotland, finally settling in Yorkshire.

My sons are both English although one of them was born in Wales (Bridgend).

Now we live in the Isle of Man and, I suppose when I reach Manx worker status in 3 years I could class myself as Manx. But I don't think I will! Big grin

I was under the impression that all of our ancestors are from what is modern day Tanzania/Kenya - haven't the earliest 'human' fossils been traced back to the Olduvai Gorge ? I think that checks of mitochondrial DNA take us back there as well

Irish/Scottish on my father's side, my grandfather was Irish, grandmother is Scottish.

My mother's side is Swedish, although there is a trace of Turkish blood on her side. According to the annals, my ancestor accompanied Carolus XII back from his stay in Turkey in the early 1700's, and got lucky with a barmaid!

Well,

On my dad's side, his parents and ancestors are 100% Scottish, he's 1/2 Scottish and 1/2 English.
On my mother's side, purely from England as far back as I can trace.

So I'm 3/4 English and 1/4 Scottish
However, because my grandparents are pure Scottish, in sporting terms, I'm half English and Half Scottish, and therefore qualify to play for either the English or the Scottish national teams ,football for example.

Because being an "Australian" isn't dependent on where you or your parents were born. It's a state of mind, a "spirit" (cheesy but true). It's also of course your status as a citizen. If you come to Australia and make a legal and emotional commitment to it (what the indigenous peoples of the Uluru area called kanyini) - you become an Australian. I've done that, so I am one.

To narrowly define your status against a prejudiced and esoteric checklist, you begin down a very slippery slope. QFA380 believes in defining national status in such a way (in the process, ignoring all the obvious logical flaws of this argument). The debate over what is and what isn't "Australian" is very divisive, it comes down to inclusion versus exclusion. QFA380 believes in the latter, while I believe in the former.

On my dads side it is 100% Greek. He was born there and his whole family is from there.

On my mothers side, Her mother is 100% Polish and her father is 50% Swedish and 50% Norwegian.

So that would make me:
50% Greek
25% Polish
25% Swedish/Norwegian

If I remember correctly, my Mum's family have been living in Central Scotland for a many a hundred years (we have almost the biggest family in West Lothian) but came from Norway with the Viking Invaders who settled with people over here.
My Dad's side of the family have been in Scotland since the late 1800s, before that they came from France and are beleived to have migrated there (whilst stopping in different areas) from the Middle East / Mediterranean since the time of Christ. That is how far back we can trace it. I'm not sure if that is even fact  Confused, but it is logical as all my dad's family are dark skinned, pointing to the fact that they came from a warmer climate.

Me: born in Lansing, Michigan
Mom: born in Chamoson, Switzerland
Dad: born in Athens, Greece
Mom's mom: born in Milan, Italy
Mom's dad: born in Chamoson, Switzerland
Dad's mom: born in Kalamata, Greece
Dad's dad: born in Kefalonia, Greece

So my ancestry is Greek and Swiss for the most part, but I have some Italian in me. Most Greek people know the moment they hear my last name (Panayotatos) that my family is from Kefalonia. Most Swiss people know the moment they hear my mom's maiden name (Favre) that her family is from Chamoson, Switzerland.

My fathers family are highland Scots, from the area around Loch Ness. They settled in North Carolina after the battle of Culloden, and most of them are still there.

My Mother's family are generic Irish Catholics. They showed up in Boston Harbor around the time of the potato famine, not much is known about them before then. Although my great-great grandfather became a well known ward boss and had a square named after him in Boston (Keany Square)

According to my paternal grandmother, my grandfather's father was German; though my great-grandma was a single mom... Other than that, my ancestors are Guatemalan as far as I can go.

And yes, I speak a bit of German, but that's because I took several courses in 2002.  Silly

I never knew any of my grandparents, they all passed before my time. Grandfather on my mother's side served in the Luftwaffe during WWII.

My Dad's family's roots come from Lincolnshire and Cambridgeshire, we have family records going back to about the 16th century (various of my ancestors were excommunicated by the CofE for being Quakers and Non-conformists). My family's surname is supposed originally to be from Flanders, back in the Middle Ages - there was lots of trade in wool between Flanders and Eastern England.

My mom's family is old old old English as well, she is a distant descendant of the Seymour family, and so very distantly related to Tudor royalty (I expect I'm about 10,284,175,204,394,895,183rd in line to the throne).

Mine are from Ireland by way of Prince Edward Isle; England by way of Plymouth Colony and colonial South Carolina; Norway, by way of a lifetime at sea and Scotland with a brief stopover in Canada. Euromutt. American.

That is true. But the argument is how can one call themself Australian? Well the truth is no one can, not even Indigenous Australians can claim it as even they are of Asian decent. That is if your looking at it from a genetic ancestory view.
