US Open Tennis

Mon Aug 28, 2006 10:23 am

The last Grand Slam of the year has arrived .The US open Tennis begins on the 28th and finishes on the 10th of September.
Well we see Federer win his third open in succession and add to his 8 grand slam titles already or will someone else step up this time around. This will also be Agassi last Grand Slam.

Well, obviously it'd be great to see Agassi win, but that's an extremely unlikely outcome. Hopefully he'll at least get to the quarters or so.

Other than that, I don't really have a favorite on the men's side. Federer is always a pleasure to watch, of course.

On the women's side, I'm a fan of Sharapova (except for the extreme grunting, which is annoying as hell). It'd be nice to see her get another grand slam tourney under her belt.

I am going to go with a Roger Federer vs Rafael Nadal. I know Federer has a tuff go with Nadel but I think he will pull it off in 6 sets.

As far as women go I am going to place my bet on Justine Henin-Hardenne, though I would be happer then a pig in Shite if Martina Hingis wins, free drinks on me if that is the case.

Don't you mean 5 sets.
Nadal seems to have proven himself on Grass I wonder if he can do it again on a different surface

Not liking the time difference too much  Sad Having to stay up very late at the moment to watch the tennis.

What I am liking though is the ability for players to challenge calls. I watched the Toronto and Cincinatti masters and saw some great calls by the players. Some were right in front of the umpire. Let hope we some more over the next week and a half.

I think that Federer will win in the men's and I'm going to go for Mauresmo in the women's. I know, both are top seeds, but it's just the way I see it going. They are top seeds for a reason.  Wink

The shoe is on the other foot! Muwahahaha! It's actually perfect for me. It's carried live, so when a match goes until midnight it's only 9pm here.

I like that too. If it's a successful challenge, they retain it for reuse, and get an extra challenge during a tiebreak.

It definitely adds a new twist to the game. It's also funny to hear McEnroe up in the booth being like "c'mon ______, challenge this one!" Then seeing if he was correct.

4-3 Bagdatis in the third set with Agassi up two sets, and I'm really torn about whom to root for! This is a great example of the perfect match-up to have during evening play, and some interesting challenges so far.

What a game! Baghdatis really is making a name for himself. Although he lost, he has done some great things this year.

And Agassi, well, what can you say... Not many people (5) have won the four slams and had a career spanning 2 complete decades. Truly an exceptional player!!

I would love to see the farewell he gets when he finally departs this tournament. The farewell he got at Wimbledon was special enough, so what is it going to be like at his home slam!?

It'll probably be something like Jimmy Connors' comeback year at the Open in '91. It seemed like everyone was behind him and so sad to see him go after making it to the semi-finals that year. Funny that a guy like Sampras, who was such a good player technically, never really connected with the crowds as a personality.

I hope Andre makes it at least as far, and makes it a special year again. I can't help but hang onto every match he plays, because it could be his last!

If we'll have another Federer-Nadal final, it would be much tougher for Federer to win than it was in Wimbledon.

As for me, it is Agassi's tournament and he deserved it. Unfortunately, I don't believe he can reach final. Although he won two matches, it is not the Agassi I remember and it is obvious that he is suffering. I wish him the best.

Well, that does it for Andre Agassi....Glad he got to play a couple of spectacular matches at this US Open. This match wasn't the best from either end, but Becker managed to pull it though.

He also had very nice words for the spectators after the match.

Best of luck to him in the future....

Anyone see the Murray Gonzales game?

Man, Gonzales was hitting some really slow first serves, but they were going so wide it was hard to believe! From the deuce court he was hitting the ball so wide that Murray disappeared behind the umpires chair out of picture. Quite incredible to watch.

Murray did well though and won in 5. It really did look like he was going out after 3 sets (won the first, but lost the 2nd and 3rd 6-3 and 6-2).

I've decided that I really don't like CBS' coverage on the middle weekend of play. First off, it wasn't correctly listed in my TV Guide, and I missed Agassi's last game!! I finally caught up with it last night, and was glad I did--he left the game gracefully, if emotionally.

For some reason, CBS likes to bounce around match-to-match, and it's hard to follow the action. I was greatly relieved to have it come back onto USA/CNBC last night and see Hewitt/Gasquet from start to finish!

I'm really looking forward to Roddick/Hewitt now, and a possible Roddick/Nadal match-up in the semi's. There's been a lot of great tennis by both the men and women leading up to the finals this year.  bigthumbsup

Absolutely - and it's quite obvious that it's good that Agassi bowed out when he did. He wouldn't have stood a chance against Roddick, and he would have just hurt his back worse if he tried.

Speaking of which, I was pretty impressed with Roddick's play. He's looking better than he has in awhile. Guess Connors has been good for him.

Davenport vs. Henin-Hardenne ought to be a good one also. Of course, I'm rooting for Sharapova...

My boss has tickets to the mens' semifinals. Damn....

Thankfully on Sky, if you hit the red button on your remote, you have the choice of 7 screens to watch. 2 screens are results and scores, whilst the other 5 are matches. The BBC have an annoying habit of leaving matches at crucial times as well, to switch over to the British interests. Thankfully they have the red button option too, which means you can go back and find the match you were watching.

Quoting AeroWesty (Reply 35):

Unfortunately yes. I was watching the Murray Davydenko game which looked like it might turn into another battle, when they postponed play due to rain. First thing i did this morning was check the scores, but looks like they must have had rain all yesterday afternoon and evening as it is still 2-1 to Davydenko.

Yes, it should be on as soon as the doubles game on Ashe is done, which is in progress at the moment!

That could be a very promising game, although Blake might not stand a big chance. Their history together is pretty one sided.. 4-0 for Federer. In fact, Blake did not win 1 set against Federer. All their games were played on a hard court, in the USA. But nevertheless.. i hope Blake wins.
