Queen Elizabeth Of England

Mon Aug 28, 2006 12:17 pm

I was going to www.apple.com to look at the trailers for some movies I was interested in seeing this fall. Then this trailer caught my attention: "The Queen". There was no mistake who this woman was playing. So I watched it. This is going into some behinds the scenes plot of the events after Diana's death and how the Queen handled the situation. If its okay with the moderators here, here is the link to the trailer in quick time
http://www.apple.com/trailers/miramax/thequeen/

Do the makers of this have some sort of basis for this movie? I was very saddened by Diana's death, that was my freshman year of High School year as well.

Oh - my - god.

Aside from the fact that this is NOT the Queen that I am familiar with, this film looks a total farce!

It'll be interesting to see if this one has an audience. Especially in the US.

It actually looks like quite a good film. I'll be looking forward to that.

I'll probaly be watching it alone though!

I'm still quite shocked by all this. It's quite unprecedented. No semi-ficticious/semi-historic dramatic feature film has EVER been made about my country's head of state. This could well have an impact upon the way the monarchy is viewed (we all know the power of movies). It could have ramifications...

Blimey. I'm a bit thrown by this one.

Yes, I was about to ask if there was any factual basis for any of this or if it's all based on conjecture and hyperbole.

I don't think the movie has a proper website yet.

I just downloaded the trailer. It looks good actually. If it turns out to be crap, the scenery and video footage would still make it a worthwhile 90 minutes.

Helen Mirren is a great actress. I would imagine the Queen is a very difficult role to play, particularly since this film seems to attempt to portray a sensitive and human side of Her Majesty we don't usually see. It's almost as if Ms. Mirren would need to 'invent' that part of her character on her own.

We are all aware of your feelings on the monarchy but make up your mind, if you accept (and by implication the above quote says you do) the Queen as your head of state then you should accept the Union Jack's place on the Australian flag.

777236ER, you're not stupid. You know it's not as simple as that. A compelling case has to be put, we have to agree, not just as a majority but as an overwhealming majority. If you wish to further your argument within my country I welcome it.

No, it isn't as simple as that. But it is still down entirely to Australia and Australians, and no-one else.

You may place your faith in the church of england, but I'm naturally reluctant.

I find it interesting that despite our combative relationship, 777236ER and I are actually advocating the same thing - making Elizabeth the second the Queen of Great Britain to the exclusion of all other nations, and making the union flag the flag of the UK exclusively. We should be best friends in theory!

It is that simple, really. All you have to do is convince Australians that it's the right thing to do, so I don't really understand why you instead try to convince a bunch of foreigners on an aircraft website.

I am seriously not advocating anything, I really really aren't. I don't have an agenda at all! I don't care either way if Australia has the Queen as the head of state, has her as the state's number one enemy or if it broadcasts Elizabeth II Porn 24 hours a day on all TV channels.

Do you think I don't realise who needs to be convinced? The idea may be simple, but you surely must appreciate the execution is an extremely complex undertaking. At least admit that.

Quoting 777236ER (Reply 24):
so I don't really understand why you instead try to convince a bunch of foreigners on an aircraft website.

I'm expressing ideas and opinions, as you and everyone else here does. I think it's a bit condescending for you to think me so stupid as to assume I'll achieve the above stated goals by chatting on this forum to you lot. I contribute to this forum for a variety of reasons; attempting to affect change in my own country is not one of them.

Quoting 777236ER (Reply 24):
I am seriously not advocating anything, I really really aren't.

It really sounds as if you are though. This might not be an actual political goal of yours, but you are advocating (through consistently expressing your opinion on the issue, which by the way - you point out repeatedly is entirely an Australian one) for a change to the current arrangements.

Quoting 777236ER (Reply 24):
I don't care either way if Australia has the Queen as the head of state

Again, you say that, but going by your comments I'm afraid I don't believe you. Did you or did you not say above: "It's Australians that persist in incorporating our flag, and having our head of state"? Now I've read that sentence many many times, and each time I come away with the impression that it conveys frustration with the current constitutional and symbolic situation.

Quoting 777236ER (Reply 24):
It's not us you have to convince, its your fellow countrymen.

You say that like I have to choose between the two. Can I share something with you? The reason I persist in reiterating my opinions on these issues in this international forum is because I realise that most people, especially in the UK, have probably never been confronted with Australian nationalism or republicanism in any direct form. We have a shared history, and I think it's important (and fascinating) to discuss the ways in which our move to a republic will impact longstanding historic connections and relationships. I like to challenge the pre-conceived notions many Britons have of Australians as docile, simple characters, content to be constitutionally subservient (statute of Westminster, and Australia Act 1986 aside!).

My God.

OK, fine, from this point on my official position on the matter is 'the Queen stays the head of state for Australia'. If you keep going, I'll start sending letters to the government demanding perhaps an invasion, or that the Duke of Edinburgh be installed as the new Australian prime minister.
